On intention of connecting Mystara and the Forgotten Realms

@McCarthy_JT
@TheEdVerse I was looking over a copy of the old Principalities of Glantri gazateer earlier this year, and a peculiar idea sort of took up residence in the corners of my mind. Without putting it all out there, is there any chance that there was ever an intention or an idea of connecting Mystara and the Forgotten Realms in any sense through the Principalities?
@TheEdVerse
Yes. Unofficially, so DMs could run a high-level "across the worlds" campaign (like the later Planescape or the Spelljammer novels that involved travel from TSR world to TSR world), but the product lines remained distinct legally.
(Magic wielders controlling portals.)
Given the original requesters hints, I'd bet it revolves around the athora of Thay (or something similar) and the radiance / aka Nucleus of the Spheres. Of course, there's also the similarity between the name of "Mystra" as the goddess of magic and the world name of "Mystara".
There's also the nucleus of the spheres paradox which in some small ways resembles the Abeir Toril split.

Ed also said there was a portal connecting the Five Shires to Luiren, and that one was settled by hin from the other -- but he didn't specify which settled which. |

On 'sunsigh'
Kokopelli — 11/10/2024 10:01 AM
Friend @Ed Greenwood, I was just re-reading your write-up of Nimbral, posted lo these many moons ago on the WotC site, back when they routinely gave us free lore. I found myself noting one particular thing: "sunsigh (that moment after highsun when the sun has clearly passed its highest point)" – is this reckoning of time used elsewhere in the Realms, or is it purely a Nimbran thing?
Ed Greenwood — 11/10/2024 12:08 PM
It's a Nimbran thing, but has spread to a few sages and far travelers, purely because they like the idea. However, use it in other company, and the reaction will be bewilderment. |

On Karsus becoming Asmodeus
Gahbreeil — 13/11/2024 3:20 AM
@Ed Greenwood Is Karsus the mortal whom became Asmodeus?
Ed Greenwood — 13/11/2024 11:17 AM
No. Asmodeus was around long before Karsus was born. |

On splinter organizations
Joe Chang — 21/11/2024 11:38 AM
A Patreon suggestion: could you please show us some splinter organizations in the Realms? An offshoot group of the Harpers or Zhents is easier for me to run as a DM because I don't have to know (or pretend to know) everything that is going on with the larger groups. Or I can give the antagonists unclear motivations and unexpected behaviors (like ex-Zhents who want to do some good). And it allows for the possibility for my players to definitively vanquish a group of bad-guys and get an extra sense of accomplishment.
Ed Greenwood — 23/11/2024 11:49 PM
Plenty of new, smaller "power groups" (factions, if you're WotC) are on the docket during the months ahead. |

On tax exemptions for Cormyr shrines and temples
Joe Chang — 3/12/2024 8:44 PM
Dear @Ed Greenwood and @Brian Cortijo. Are temples and shrines exempt from taxation in Cormyr?
Ed Greenwood — 4/12/2024 12:56 AM
Yes. However, it's customary, when the temple or shrine is located in a settlement that collects local taxes (for road upkeep, signage, night lighting, bridge maintenance, and policing), for the clergy who staff it to make an annual donation to the settlement equal to the (realty) taxes paid by the highest local regular payer. |

On path to lichdom
kageura necromancer wizard — 5/12/2024 12:08 AM
Hello @Ed Greenwood, my name is owen stacey, i have been a fan of your forgotten realms Faerun for some time now. My bookshelf is filled with forgotten realms novels, and I even have mike Schley's sword coast map hanging above my bed at home, thank you for creating such a rich and inspiring world. I was wondering if it would be ok to ask you a question concerning your Faerun. Some of my friends and family and I are making a group-focused fan novel set in forgotten realms. my character is a lawful evil wizard necromancer who pursues becoming a lich and I wondered if you had advice for what method to use for seeking the secret of lichdom. Some ideas I thought of for the method based on what I know and understand of Faerun are ideas such as joining a spellcaster organization( such as the dragon cult or house Orogoth) or making a bargain with a lich. I know in the "worlds and realms" book released by wotc a few months ago Mordenkainen states the Shadowfell is an ideal place for wizards seeking the secrets of undeath but I know that the book is not tailored specifically for your setting and thus was unsure whether it would be a viable option or not. I wondered what you may suggest or recommend? Any commentary on your part would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and for creating such an incredible world!
Best regards,
Owen Stacey

Ed provided a recipe for lichdom in the 2E sourcebook REF3 Lords of Darkness (not to be confused with the 3E Lords of Darkness book).
Ed Greenwood — 5/12/2024 3:35 AM
George has pointed you to one road to lichdom I've outlined in lore. There are many others (I'd avoid taking up with an existing lich, as that is likely to end in slavery/life as expendable fodder). One route your character might consider is entering into service with local clergy of Velsharoon, who can provide a clear and organized sequence of steps to lichdom, each one "paid for" by a service to the church of Velsharoon on a clear, contractual basis. I will do a video on becoming a lich, when I can get to this topic (so, spring 2025?). |
