Hello-

I heartilly agree with George on this one!

In addition - I actually like the art too! I am even somewhat curious as to where this scene - with the think waterfall in the background - can be found... :)

I rather like the cover; blessedly free of combat-scenes. As for Drizzt as the theme, well I agree with Faraer on that one.

Hello-

My main curiousity is whether or not this will be available at GenCon or not! I remember last yaer - on Sunday I think - they brought out some new items that were just about to be available...

I guess I'll have to wait and find out!

Wait. What? You mean, it isn't?

Heh.

I just thought that was temporary, place-holder art. The art for covers, as depicted on Amazon and the WotC Catalog, is sometimes different than the final product.

I agree on both counts. I like the landscape part of the picture, but not the focus on Drizzt.

Indeed, some extracts would be cool. Sort of doubt it, though. For one thing, the preview articles have focused exclusively on RPG and M/word products for a while now. A couple of years ago they even stopped including plugs for the heavyhitting novels. Also, the "Beyond" sections of the articles have become very, very lean over the past few months, doubtless through no fault of Matt Smith's.

Regarding the cover art, I've got no opinion on the art itself, [as I can't see], but far better a landscape than some combat scene. Waterfalls are nice, though. As for Drizzt: Hey, if his mug on the cover sells more copies, that's fine with me, though like the rest of you I'm not keen on the potential implication that the Realms is synonymous with Drizzt. [Poor Drizzt. Sometimes I think we're rather hard on him. Perhaps we're over sensitive about these things.]

I know. Overall, I don't have a problem with the character so much as the idea that Drizzt is the be-all end-all of the Forgotten Realms setting (which is what putting Drizzt on the cover of this book seems to imply).

I am a huge Drizzt fan, but once I saw the cover art, he seems out of place for the product. I am assuming that due to his anniversary year, we are seeing him here. Nice art though and I am in agreement, if it helps with sales, great.

On the Bhaalspawn stuff:

Honestly, whilst I don't care if the subpar BG novels are the "official" way things went down in the minds of the folks at WotC, I'd rather that their coverage in the Grand History was limited to:

"The Bhaalspawn conflict/s took place at this time"

Or something similarly quick and to the point. It's not like Abdel really ended up being anyone of huge importance in the end, so why go into any overt details?

That way I can at least imagine that I'm playing through "canon" events (providing the main character doesn't accept godhood anyway ;))... though I suppose there's no harm in thinking of it as a parallel Faerun either - the multiverse is a big place after all.

My annoying witterings on BG aside, I am very much looking forward to this book. Fluff is one of my favourite things - especially Realms fluff - and I shall be lapping this up as soon as I am able.

I'm especially looking foward to reading up on the mortal lives of Bane, Myrkul and Bhaal... if only to see how far off I was in regards to their rise to godhood - which I placed at around the Year of Foul Awakenings.

"Bane" = "Xvim" = Cyric, Prince of Lies

Heck, BG1 has an in-game book about the events of the year 1369 DR, so it couldn't be 1368 in-game.

But (sadly) the novels are official.

Aye....

Though according to the Campaign Book, Eltan is still alive as of 1372 DR, so I'll continue to think that the novels were poppycock ;)

Actually, Eric fixed that and explained how Eltan is alive even though he was dead due to the events of the novels. It's in..... crap forgot the book but it's one of the recent sourcebooks. Power of Faerun maybe? Plus Eric commented about it on the boards.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Now here is the right place to discuss the books cover art. Interesting point you have about Drizzt on the front cover...... As I said thoug, Iwould have liked the "standard-3.x-FR"-style with the narrow pics on the otherwise paper-styled page. But that is just my opinion

and after all, its just the cover. it will leave the content of the book unharmed and impressive most likely, aye?!?

I think that the style of cover (that is, "not standard game-product style") is meant to make the book appeal both to FR gamers, who will want the book for gaming background, and to novel-only consumers, who will use it to keep track of multiple plotlines from various novel series. Hopefully, it will create some crossover readers ("I wonder who this Azoun chap is; maybe I'll look for a book on him") and some fiction-to-game buyers ("I wonder what it'd be like to make my own stories in this world").

We'll just have to see...

I just hope people like it for what it is, enjoy it for what it is, and buy it in sufficient quantities that "pure realmslore" products become a fixture on the FR product schedule.

Who will much spend time on the cover when the content is so much more interesting. It will be one of the better FR products I will add to my collection, and one would hope (even against all odds) that this type turns indeed into a fixture...

Hello-

During some 'spare' time at work today - I looked this up - and see that it now has a late August release listed - 8/28 IIRC.

I have a sneaky suspicion that we will see this at GenCon... maybe not - but I'm thinking there Certainly is a chance...

I want it! I want it! I want it! I want It! Now! Now! Now! Now! Realms material full of fluffy goodness! Mr. James don't say things like that! I pre-ordered my copy from Amazon Sunday... I have not been this excited about a Realms product in YEARS! (other than novels)This is a tome I will use repeatedly in my campaign. (If I ever get it started up again) I will concur with the folks here about the cover art! Very nice, even with Drizzt... Imagine, one canon source with all the years and events in one book... It boggles the mind! Thanks to Brian James and WotC! I will buy two copies if it will help provide more future Realms Fluff...

This is really pushing the hype - Dhomal. I fell my excitement tickling in the back of my throught and making my tummy all "uiuiui". Havn't had that feeling since the first year of my relationship!

- And this is just a book!!!! Don't anyone tale that my girlfriend. -

I would love to go to GenCon to pic it up myself but unfortunatelly I won't be able to. So all I can do is wait for amazon shiping to hurry up a bit.
