According to a post at another site, Erik doesn't believe this is the final cover. Part of his reasoning behind this is he'd hope the final cover would spell his name correctly.

I've confirmed with my editor that this is NOT the final cover. She hasn't been given a chance to correct the spellings, nor have any of the other editors (I imagine they'll spell my name properly, aye!). Also, I was told the lettering might be different and the color scheme may change a bit in the final. (I imagine it may look shinier. )

She also said she wasn't sure if Amazon would eventually post the correct cover, due to the sheer volume of books they handle. I guess we'll see.

In the meantime, while it's there, enjoy.

I should also mention (and this is the hint I dropped at Worlds) that the cover's deceptive in which character it chooses to portray.

And that's all I'll say about that.

Cheers

Wow one would think they would make sure they have at least the proper spelling of a Author's name before they send the cover off to places like Amazon. Other than that the cover does look neat.

Would I like to? Absolutely.

Can I? Nope.

Suffice it to say that the location is important to the plot. Much of the novel takes place underground. So anywhere there are dungeons. . . as though that narrows it down.

The specific location would be one of those pesky NDA type thingies. Sorry!

Cheers

It looks kind of ...creepy. I can see why it's titled what it is.

Hmm, what's that symbol on her tunic? Any hints?

And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

Heh. "Creepy" is the right word by half.

Well, in my professional, completely arbitrary, not-influenced-by-writing-the-book opinion, it would appear to be the crescent moon of Corellon Larethian.

I'll be happy to answer questions based on the cover so long as it doesn't entail giving away things I can't give away (like location of said dungeon, identity of the major character(s), etc.), at the moment at least.

Cheers

I do like the style of cover, even if it isn't final.

"Instead of asking why we sleep, it might make sense to ask why we wake. Perchance we live to dream. From that perspective, the sea of troubles we navigate in the workaday world might be the price we pay for admission to another night in the world of dreams."

I appreciate the details Erik.

By chance, do you happen to know what the final cover art *may* look like?

In order of most likelihood:

1. It may look just like this, only glossier, with my name spelled correctly and hopefully not the word "series."

2. It may look like this but with different lettering (as in the text in a different style).

3. They may bugger the whole thing and rework it entirely.

Basically, I don't know (maddening, eh?). May look just like this, may not. I suspect this is a very good approximation of what it will eventually look like.

Cheers

Nice cover art! Now we talked about the crescent moon but who might be the person we only see the hand from and what are those "tentacles"? Animated linen wrapping? A mummy lord perhaps?

I'm really looking forward to this. I enjoyed Ghostwalker immensely. Enjoy the word 'Depths' the theme 'Madness' and I have quite a thing for tentacles and tendrils.

Obviously being an elf, and there being tendrilly things I'm hoping for more Moander hating on some elven ruins. Again. But then I hope to see Moander hating on some elven ruins when I go to the supermarket, when I get on the tube, when I eat peanuts, when I take a shower... actually, maybe forget I said that last one.

A little too much on the horrorish side for me. Another FR book with a lack of color. I understand it makes the piece look darker, but it just seems to belong in the horror isle or with a bunch of White-Wolf books.

I'm not sure I can see someone perusing the fantasy isle picking this one up for its cover. I don't know . . .

You raise a good point -- I think Wizards is, on the whole, going with a darker, less colorful series of covers for the Dungeons. But I've only the first cover to judge, so I can't say for sure.

If Erik Gist (who is the artist, it seems, for Depths) is doing all the Dungeons, then judging by his other work, they will be pretty dark.

Cheers
