What is the most often played class? I think it would probably be the fighter. This thread has no purpose save to answer another of my ridiculous questions. I'd like to hear what other scribes of Candle Keep think. What is your favorite class, which would you say is the most popular?

My favorite classes I would say are the Ranger and the Bard. The ranger is common but is a cool class, but i like bards as well they are less used because the are believed as weak. |

It depends on how you play it. A wizard can be boring, as well as a fighter or a rogue I don't have a favourite class but a favourite style of play. I don't like when i play characters who are only focus on fight (even a fighter can avoid combat and find an other way!) For that, i don't like much barbarians |

I would have to say rouge, theres nothing more suprising than to lockpick a door and stand face to face with an umberhulk. I would have to agree about the fighter being the most popular char. I guess it's the Conan syndrom. |

I agree. Playing rogues is fun because they have advantage of fighting not face to face but by hiding in shadows and backstabbing. They are also a good source of income ... |

REasons for using a Mage/Thief Reasons: 1)You *expect* them to take damage, but they still get the (slightly) better hit points as well as the thief abilities. 2)If hide in shadows fails, you can always use invis. 3) if you do this, you have room for a full f/r/p.
MY prefered classes are Ranger, but I've done wild mage for laughs. I had wanted to play Assasin, but she got the short end of the stick, since most of the magi cast True Seeing (evil spell!) before I got within striking distance. The most popular class would probably be a fighter type, though. |

I find that Rouges and Fighters are good classes. Fighters are good classes for people that have just started. But i see it as all to their own. |

I think that ranger is the best...maybe druid. When I left Underdark I became very similar to Drizzt and I love animals. Rangers and druids are close enough animals to became my favourite classes. |

Well...I forgot about Bards. They can be good as well. Very musical, good at magic. For me, that's enough. |

My latest Realms-based short story, about a bard, a paladin of Lathander and the letter of the law, Debts Repaid. It takes place before the "shattering" and gives the bard Arion a last gasp before he plunges into the present.http://candlekeep.com/campaign/logs/log-debts.htm |

Make that three Arion... (see also older thread in which a discussion on bards was held)
And I would not be surprised if Frey could also be counted in this group... |

Hmmmm Monk. For me there is just something special about someone who fights unarmed and ends doing more damage than everyone else :P The monk is in control always. Thats what i like. |

Admittedly this is restricted to my playing of the BG games...but I would say Mage - this also applies to non-AD&D games e.g. Warhammer Quest...but I do my best to make him a bit more than just a spellcaster - a bit eccentric and absentminded or arrogant and fond of big words and phrases are both normally quite amusing characterisations. |

I would be a thief/acrobat so that I could slit the purse of some upper class nobles while they were watching me perform my routine of intricate flips and rolls in a exclusive party at the king's castle...
I think I took that explanation a little too far. |

I'd have to say my favorite classes would have to be ranger, druid, and um...*ponders* probably assassin. I have plenty of assassins. Generally all of my characters are either ranger/assassin or just one or the other. For baldur's gate, I prefer the ranger class. Although wizards and clerics are pretty cool too. |

Phew... <wipes forehead> Good thing I don't allow Wild Mages then. IMO that was one of the more sillier inventions of TSR - creating a wizard who would specialize in a rare occurences of magical chaos... Personally I'm glad they're gone. |

My favorite class is a Ranger just because of there ability to track just about everything and the two handed fighting style that comes with all rangers in 3e.
The most popular class would probably be a fighter just because it is a good beginning class for newer players. But for more experienced players I would have to say that mages are more popular because it makes it a touch harder. |

A tad rough there, eh? I think it's a wee bit odd, true, but why not use it? After all, it's nice to have a wizard who can cast fireball perfectly every time, but if you're advanced, where's the challenge? The wild mage makes it so that there's a chance the spell will go wrong, hence making the mage class less reliable. Then you can't always count on the mage 100% of the time. =) Adds spice. |

I see your point my dear lady, though that's where the saving throws come in. Compare a mage or sorcerer with a fighter:
One can count on the fighter to swing his weapon 100% of the time, though the AC of the opponent and the attack roll create a randomness to determine the effect.
Similar for the mage, she casts the spell 100% of the time, though the effect depends on saving throws and magical resistance or potential disturbances during casting. Also she can only use her powers a limited times per day, while the fighter can swing his weapon almost unlimited... |

Well i must say that about 3 weeks ago i woukld ahve agreed whole-heartedly with Mumadar, that wild mages where pointless and they where just annoying. However a week ago i order the Tome of Magic from Ebay for £4!!! After skimming throught it i saw the new spells and thought they where very good, but what i liked the most was the Wild mage rules! I have been so inspired that i am going to introduce a wand of wonder into the game. (My PCs arent that experianced so they wont know exactally what it does!) The fun of it. I appologize for my spelling, and if you havent already guessed i am a 2nd Edition player!!! Hanx |

I would have to say my favorite class would be any under the Ranger Kit or any magic caster class. What I hate is the resitriction on Clerics. They can't use bladed weapons! I made a cleric/fighter a while ago then I found out he couldn't use blades, I love blades!!!!!! |
