The DM and I have been using this particular home made shadow elf for some time now. The background of these elves are more oriental, mixing ninja and samurai training and culture. For the past few campaigns, no one mind the Elcaros the shadow elf. Heck, we had quite a lot of fun role playing his interactions with other elven party members who mistook him for a drow. Then a new player joins in. Problem starts. He starts saying that Elcaros shouldn't be played at all, as there are no shadow elves in Faerun (are there?). DM gives Elcaros' history (he was trapped in this realm, blah blah blah) and gives a good reason for him to be here. My question: Should I continue using this elf? And can I have opinions on what his stats should be, 'cos the DM's version seem a bit unbalanced.

No. Shadow Elves do not exist in the Realms. I recall basic D&D had something they called Shadow Elves, but that was it. As for whether or not you can play this character, that's between you and your DM. Since he's been allowing it up til now, why does this anal new player have any say in the matter? |

I concur. There are no Shadow Elves in Faerūn, but if your DM allows it, then it's acceptable for play. The new player either needs to accept this particular ruling of the DM, or find a new campaign. |

I again agree with SB -- this is something for your DM to handle.
And I hope he doesn't give in. If he gives in on this one, he could be pushed to give in on other things the new person wants or doesn't want -- and that can ruin things for everyone else. |

Indeed, from the little I've heard so far, this new player is either a rules lawyer (aren't those fun) or perhaps jealous of you/your character. |

DM hates the player. Problem is that he was 'recommended' by 2 other players that are in the party. So DM might kick one out, but in the end, 3 will go. Problem's there, i guess.

More of a rule lawyer, that one. One of the other player's weapon is a custom made axe/sword hybrid. Damned **** kept pestering DM to not allow such things as they "ruin the game". Personally, HE ruins the game...can't even have 30 minutes of peace with him.
And no, DM don't look like giving in to this sod. But then we'll have to restart the whole campaign...again |

Who? DM's 21, new a**hole just 15. The kid is REALLY getting on my nerves now...DM made him lost in a labyrinth-like dungeon for almost killing 3 party members just now. Oh how I wish I could just make him an arrow pin cushion... |

At least this time we get to have chocobos in the campaign, along with the Zergs and Protoss again. Yay! If I'm lucky, the amateur thief'll get killed like the last guy who got caught up in the Zerg-Protoss crossfire. |

Speaking of Brats...
And egads, can you imagine Shakespeare as a DM? Great fun, but talk about strong likelihood of TPKs.

Well, the idea of shadow elves came from the DM. I just helped expand it, that's all. Originated 'cos of wanting to see what happens if elves were more...oriental. At first it was Oriental Elves, focused on japanese, mongolian and chinese culture. Then because we were more on the ninja and samurai attributes, it became Shadow Elves to fit the descirption of dark, noble and elusive sonsab*tches. I got the honor of using Elcaros at one of his campaign and am still using him til now.
What do you want to know about the shadow elves? Culture? Abilities? As for their history, we just said that they originated from somewhere WAY far east of Kara Tur, got banished to another plane for dealing with the wrong gods (Lloth, Shar, etc). We wanted to give them an oriental feel, so we modified almost everything in terms of weapons, armor, spells (they draw from a different Weave) and pantheons. Shadow elves look like drow, but taller, have black hair, silver eyes and live above ground. |

The Shadows Elves are (besides the connotations to the soon-to-be-revealed Eberron race) exclusively an elvish race of the Mystara setting.
WotC have generously provided the offical DM's Guide to the Shadow Elf race on their site. It should prove useful for your efforts.

It's rough when your group dynamics aren't working. And when the DM doesn't get along well with a player, things can get really messy. Kicking a player out of the group is very difficult. Either there is a lot of hard feelings or the group splits apart. I have no advice for you, just to say I understand how tough this can be.

Ugh! This is aweful as well. Having to interrupt the game every few minutes to discuss some rules aspect of the game or critize what the DM or other players are doing. A party never gets anywhere when this keeps happening. Very irritating. |

Ok we have had similar things occur when we were adjusting things from 2nd to 3rd edition for a game, the juvinile dragon in out party had too many hit dice, but no one in the party complained until we got a new player and he raised hell about it.
Saying that he shouldn't be traveling with such low level characters, blah and that dragons were power gaming...blah.
The GM put our game on hold because of this and had to sort it out.If a player is that much of a problem, no matter who refered him to you he should not be aloud to disrupt your group.
Other players should be mature enough to recognize this as a problem to the game, since he's the only one complaining.
I hope things work themselves out well for you. |

I really have been fortunate. Even when I've been involved in a player leaving or being told to leave, I'd never seen it affect the group in the manner described above. |

It went well today. Three party member left but we'll get replacements soon. Until then, I'm enjoying the slow, painful dismemberment of the thief. DM finally got fed up and kicked the POS out. When his friends objected, he kicked them out too. Moral of the story: NEVER piss the DM off, especially if he's been trying his best to toloerate you. POS-Piece Of S**t |

Already is. All the trouble he caused in the towns we visited made him a wanted person. So, now we're cashing in. We just cut him up, then send his pieces to the towns to collect the bounty. |
