This is FR related, but it also concerns several settings, rather than just one specific world. From dragonlance.com -

Karen Wynn Fonstad Passes Away
Posted on 3/14/2005 by Trampas Whiteman
Karen Wynn Fonstad passed away Friday, March 11, 2005, from complications from breast cancer. Dragonlance fans will remember her cartography from such products as Dragonlance Adventures and Tales of the Lance, although she is perhaps best remembered for The Atlas of the Dragonlance World. Karen is also known for other atlases, including ones for the Forgotten Realms, Pern, and Middle-Earth. For more information, please see this article ( http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/8/1110669403 ). Our thoughts and prayers go out to Karen's family and loved ones.

That is sad news indeed.

I'll have to give my copy of 'The Atlas of the Dragonlance World' a special spot on the bookshelf. I do have some fond memories of that world and exploring it along her maps, it is the world where I began my D&D game/DM career all those years ago...

I'm sure everyone at Candlekeep echoes these thoughts and prayers. I still use her FR product to this day. A very talented lady.

Well met

This is indeed very sad news. I have long admired Karen's work in the FR Atlas and also in the DL Atlas. The FR Atlas was one of (if not THE) first FR tome I owned, and although it's looking a little dog-eared it's still one of my most treasured products.

In addition, I so loved Karen's work that I bought a NON-FR tome the Dragonlance Atlas! I also still hope to come across the Atlas of Pern once day, which I first saw over 10 years ago, and never since

Great work and i'm sure Karen and her work will be fondly remembered by many fans.

Truely Sad News.

I simpathise with Mrs Fonstad family, this is a grevious blow to them.

I'd like to echo what other members have said; I hope Mrs Fonstad can find peace after her battle.

Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore-
While i nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.

Sorry to hear it.

In 1984 I first come across her work, she had detail the whole world of Pern, at the moment I though "how cool can be to map places that only belong to people imagination", and then year after year it become clear that Karen was the cartographer of fantasy.

Her work for Middle-Earth, Dragonlance, Pern and the Forgotten Realms will always have a special place on my bookshelf.

While WOTC is obviously saddened at her loss, I don't see them releasing new editions because of her death.

Indeed... I got mine several years ago, at a reasonable price. I check eBay every day, and I watch when the Atlas pops up on there. Usually it goes for quite a nice price.

Indeed sad news, well she will be remembered in all fans hearts.

We have fostered trust, recruited loyalty, and gathered the faithful. We have trained thousands. Our legions can cover the land, fill the sky and travel through the darkness. We can hunt any and all that would deny our heritage. Now is our time, now is the time of the Dark Reign(Rain) of the Empire of Shadows.

Very sad indeed, I feel for her family and any other that has to deal with such a tragic loss that can follow a battle with cancer.

Karen did some excellent work, my copy of the FR Atlas is quite dog eared as well, but it is still just as relevant to the game that I love today as it was when I purchased it years ago.
