'King Tiax', huh? As in 'Tiax rules all!' then get's locked in Spellhold, greeses his wheels, tries to escape, and manages to shrink his underwear three sizes? THAT Tiax? Or are you a distant relative? |

Well, anyway, my favorite city is Zitra, the near-nameless Sword Coast city that fell into the sea...Also know as Eight-Year-Old Ed's writing failure, if I hear right. My hearing right is probably not likely, but I thought I'd mention it, since not enough people read author's notes, afterwords, and all that junk that has nothing to do with the story but does poke overmuch into other people's business(heh heh). |

It's Zirta. And when did it fall into the sea? Zirta is the former name for what we now know in the Realms as the caravan city of Scornubel. Or so I believed.

Ahem, "Zitra" would be Zirta, and it fell nowhere: it's now part of Scornubel (they "grew together" over time). Nor would I call the tale that we know it by a "failure." For a story written by an eight-year-old, it stands up very well. It's not every young kid who can get their novels published, and make themselves spending money (enough to buy cottages and cars) all through school and university. love, THO |

So many to choose from:
1) Waterdeep 2) Menzoberranzan (if properly illuminated for my human eyes or provided I had darkvision) 3) Deep Imaskar 4) Silverymoon 5) Shade (A Netherese flying city! Woohoo!) |

Pardon me. I did say I get bad information. Now I have to find another city that fell into the sea though! What am I going to do? |

For me as a DM, I really enjoy sending my players to the foulest places on Toril, of which are my favourites.
They have braved the muddy streets of Skullport to see the slave market be alive with things there that they would normally kill (or run from) in the corridors of undermountain.....
They have walked the streets of Calimport, with all the local inhabitants trying to pry every gold to copper off of them for "tours" of the city. Also, with the numerous temples to the less than savory gods, the parties clerics were always at unease...
They have walked the streets of Waterdeep, to rest their weary boots at the Crawling Spider.....with it's Drow-looking waitresses, with the party drow female constantly being harassed about her "lifelike" appearance!!
To name a few. =)

Yeah, it hasn't fallen into the sea yet, but I think Candlekeep is pretty neat. Then again, I might think too much. |

Candlekeep will always be a special place for me, partly because the wonderful Baldur's Gate game series begins there, with your character having been raised there as a ward. |

I think Esmeltaran following the invasion by the Sythillisian Empire is pretty darn cool--an army of ogres, Underdark hobgoblins, goblins, kobolds, hill giants, and human Cyricists occupying Amn's original capital and resort city for its wealthiest elite.
I'm also intrigued by the possibilities for Ormpur, a Lapaliiyan city-state that's on the Shining Sea, neighboring the western Shaar. It's only city in the Realms that openly worships Tiamat, and it was the site of a holy war precipitated by a royal coup some seven decades past. It had become enormously wealthy due to its monopoly on the saffron trade, but the city was greatly reduced by the holy war. We're given no details at all on the war. The info on it is sketchy in general, so there's room for lots of creativity there.

For me, there are so many cool cities in the Realms I can't name just one, or decide that one is cool over all others.
God, sometimes I wish I could visit Toril. |

Mine would be Westgate or Waterdeep, since we had so many great campaigns there.
I'm remembering the prices for garlic in westgate now. God that was fun. That beatiful look on the players faces when they looked at me an said: WHAT!!! THAT PRICE FOR GARLIC!!!! |

My city would be somewhere like Fireshear or Ironmaster. It would be awesome to sail the frozen waters from those docks. I would also like Leuthilspar in Evermeet I'm sure. The architechture would be astounting. |

Now everybody knows it's the people that make the city so I would have to say Waterdeep. However, if you are going on the most unique and awe inspiring I have always pictured Ched Nasad as simply breathtaking. A whole city built on a multi-layered spider web!
Now I know that it has been destroyed but it'll come back from the ashes to rival even much heralded Menzoberannazen. The new spider queen still loves Chaos and Menzo can't stay on top forever. |

Alright, I'll chime in on this one.
First would be Neverwinter. I like the idea of the place and the feel of it.
Second would have to be Gildenglade, though it's specifically my version of it (Elves + Dwarves + Half Elves = pretty damned cool *g*)
As for a nasty place, I'd say Hellgate Keep :) |

Contrary to popular belief, Menzoberranzan is not all that important a city. It is neither overly large nor particularly noteworthy, as far as drow cities go. |

I'm not Wooly, but... Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark and Underdark, mostly. Drow of the Underdark and the Menzoberranzan boxed set also have a little. As does the various "War of the Spider Queen" novels.
There's also a few tidbits in the CotSQ module and its associated web enhancement (mostly to do with Lolth's Silence):- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20020907a

I would agree with you. The computer games aside, I've always placed it at the top of the places I would actually want to live in as far as the Realms go, tied with Highmoon in Deepingdale.
I mean, Waterdeep's big and huge and fancy, but you're considerably more likely to be mugged in the City of Splendors than in the City of Skilled Hands. Throw in favorable weather, (Neverwinter is much more livable in the winter than say, Silverymoon) a civilized-without-being-snotty atmosphere and some really cool artisans making fine clocks, glass, gadgets, books, and other goods. Then you've and the Many-Starred Cloak and a pretty nice ex-adventurer for a mayor, and even Volo was bound to be impressed by the place.
And Highmoon, well, it's always been the Dales town that really seemed Dales-ish to me. A little cool, yet polite, to the overzealous Archenfolk and Sembians, but amiable to more trustworthy folk, you've got a beautiful town with nice people. Not to mention that the Deepingfolk can match any Evermeet or Evereskan elf at archery, and even Evermeet would ask the late Rhauntides for help on historical subjects. Now you've got a small monastery starting up. And Lord Theremin Ulath always struck me as the sort of contented leader with a pleased-half-smirk on his face most of the time. |
One usually has far more to fear from the soft-spoken wizard with a blade and well-worn boots than from the boisterous one in the ivory tower. My Tabletop Writing CV. |
