Would it be possible to arrange for me and any other total newbies to watch? It could really help us learn, and furthermore it sounds like a damn interesting campaign
Since Lady K. was the wizardress behind the creation of the PbEM website, construction of said site has halted in light of recent events. But, as a testament to her extreme will, the Lady K. has been hard at work (even in hospital) in thinking about some ideas for the site. She's even design several rough drafts about what the webpage should look like.
Either the Sage or myself, will let you know more as it happens.
macabail, I suggest you contact me about details for the PbEM, until further notice. I've already provided my address above, so just scroll up a little . . . you'll find it .
Sarta, could you send your character profile my way instead. It will help to keep things progressing on this end, and prevent the delay for the start of the game from being too great.

Ahh D-brane (why am I reminded of Pinky and the Brain? ), so you are the second DM! I thought it was the Lady K herself, well I'm sure she is helping a lot in her own ways, but this does make more sense with what Sage said. I'm glad you are here now to keep the rest of us informed and to keep the interest up until Lady K has fully recovered. I'm looking forward to getting to know you better I sent my character stats/story to Sage and got them approved already but would you like them sent to you as well? |

I'll look over them if you want, but if the Sage has already done so, and commented on it, then I hardly see the need. It's entirely up to you .
As for the Lady K., well she's been responsible for alot of the development of the PbEM, but most of the source material has come from both myself and the Sage.
Anyway, I'm also looking forward to getting to know all the scribes here better as well. I've only played in two settings during my whole D&D career (Dragonlance and Al-Qadim for those who wish to know), so the land of Faerun is still new to me.

Don't worry I've been reading books set in the Forgotten Realms for a while but this is my first campaign So we can all learn together With the great group we have here I'm sure the collected knowledge between us all will be more than enough to have a most enjoyable campaign |

The only FR tomes that I've read so far are the FRCS and Magic of Faerun. What would you recommend be my next focus?.

[This event is currently happening in one of Candlekeep's guesthouses, if any of you is also present there; if not, you will get a similar introduction whenever you meet Rondell!]
"Aye and well met adventurer!
"Name's Rondell Rivenstone from the Chionthar River, from a village about 200 miles east of Baldur's Gate. Let me introduce myself properly... [you see a small Rock Gnome with dark clothing over a very beautifully crafted explorer's garb: boots, cape, dagger, armor and even a black leather whip all match in color. You catch a glimpse of multicolored patches woven on the inside of the cloak - it seems reversible, but doing so would confer a circus-like attire to the gnome which he does not seem to desire - for the moment at least. The gnome seems very fit and well-used to the trails. A faint beastly smell emanates from him - horses? oxen? mules? Hair, eyes, beard and eyebrows are of a deep shade of brown, while his skin is of dark, tanned complexion; he towers under you, a bit over 3-foot small you think].
"I usually plow a bit of trade between my fellow gnomes' communities on the Chionthar and the Winding Water, so half my time is spent on the roads crossing the Fields of the Dead really, where I am sometimes lucky enough to get a few useful things off the hands of local farmers! he he he... I go as far East as the Boareskyr Bridge or Elturel, depending on which river I border. I do a fair bit of boating in the summer, so keep me in mind if you need a guide or want to take a vacation off the trails! About once every other year, I go to Baldur's Gate to trade with my kin there; the year after I take a bit of a risk and go meet some old friends in Gullykin, then I finish my journey here in Candlekeep. I travel light for that one, leaving my cart and mule at a friend's in Elturel. I go overland and keep well off the Wood of Sharp Teeth, riding my trusty canine friend, Rollover Quickpaw, to make the trip.
"I must also say that some consider me a decent whistler, and in my kin's villages I am sometimes asked to assist a band. Some say I can talk to birds while whistling but don't listen to them: the few fans that I have tend to exaggerate a little! I don't believe it's something that you Fair Folk or Heavy Footed ones would pay to hear, so I have also learned to do a wee bit of fluting on the side, but that's mostly good in small, not too rowdy inns."
[Rondell then leans closer, bidding you to bend down a little, forming a little cone over his mouth with his right hand, as if to pass along a secret or hide his lips from sharp-eyed onlookers...] |

This event? What are you talking about Purple Dragon Knight?
D-brane, to answer your question, I would recommend the Players Guide to Faerun. I say this because it has a little bit of everything in it and it is the newest tome, very much up-to-date. After that you can't go wrong My personal favorite is the Silver Marches. I don't have all of the FR source books, I myself am planning on buying Monsters of Faerun and Unearthed Arcana sometime soon.
What I meant earlier was that I got started by reading novels set in the Forgotten Realms Just wanted to make that clear just in case you thought I got started by reading the sourcebooks hehe |

Actually, it depends on what you're looking for. If you want information about playing in the Realms, the PGtF is what you want. It updates all the rules, fixing a lot of old problems. (And adding a few new ones, of course . . . )
However, if you're looking for information about the Realms, then The Silver Marches is a good one (though, obviously, limited only to the Silver Marches region). For something easy to get to, you can download some old Volo's Guides from WotC's website. Just ignore the stat blocks and let the Realmslore pour in. |
Hell hath no fury like all of Candlekeep rising in defense of one of its own.

It was a less than clear attempt to introduce my characters to the other PCs (in the unlikely event that some of your PCs were also in Candlekeep at the beginning of the campaign), and my own clumsy way to tell the DM that my character is in Candlekeep now (so he can plan accordingly and find me a good reason to end up in Waterdeep, if that's where the campaign begins...)
Edit: if some of your PCs are indeed there, and are interested to hear more about the little gnome, Rondell will be please to tell you more about his life... only if you tell them something about you first! He's a fine and jolly fellow, but not a fool! Cyricist, Talos-kissers and worse often roam the Western Heartlands!! |

I hate having to do this, but...
Due to increasing academic commitments, I will have to leave this campaign as a player. Please add my name to the "lurker" list. If it is possible, I might be able to join in the future. |

Thank you for that clarification Purple Dragon Knight that is indeed a very unique and interesting way to introduce your character I'm sure the thought of trade or the lure of money would bring your enterprising little gnome to Waterdeep eventually
Artalis, no we have not yet.
D-brane, any ideas on our starting gold? 19,000gp is the starting gold for 7th level characters but most everyone has expressed a desire for a little more |

19,000 gp is the starting gold limit, although if anyone can provide a valid reason for why they should get a little more, then perhaps I'll consider it . Sorry if that sounds a little dictatorial, but I've seen one to many campaigns get out of hand very early because of a poor decision in starting gold.

I'm sorry to hear you won't be joining us Arivia . I wonder how your own campaign will fare with these increasing academic commitments?.
Now, I'm still waiting for a few more character profiles. Please, if you are just a visitor here at Candlekeep and have also contacted me with an interest in being included in the PbEM, I would ask you to now have your PC sheets in by the 10th of May.
Thank you .
Have I missed anything ?.

That's exactly why I'm leaving-to keep my own campaign from going under. As my players know, I haven't been very punctual with some things that need to be done there.(Mostly because I'm trying to get some things exactly right.)
I was looking forward to this... |

-Story- Hanely Rosamond is a fisherman from Waterdeep. He captains a fairly large fishing boat and is known for his love of the sea and his fair prices on his catches. He became friends with a few Aquatic elves over the years even sharing his catches with them during the lean years. One summer night an Aquatic elf maiden visited him in his cabin aboard his ship to thank him for saving her family from starvation the last winter. Early the next year she visited his cabin again, in labor, and gave birth right there to a daughter. Since Hanely had no wife he raised Allison on his own mainly aboard his ship. Her mother visited only a scant few times when she was just a babe but stopped because they could not be together all the time and thought it would be too hard to try to live in two different worlds. Therefore Allison had no memories of her mother. But she did have something of a family, as all of her fathers crew came to adore her. She grew up quickly learning to mend nets, fish, swim, and even lending her youthful eyesight in the crows nest. She also had a knack for knowing when a storm was coming before anyone else. Sometimes when times were really lean there were a few pirates who tried to take their haul. Allison at first used her shortbow in these from the crows nest but later on she adopted an unusual fighting style (after picking up weapons from dead pirates), wielding a rapier in her right hand for attacking and a cutlass in her left mainly for defense. After training with one of the other men aboard the ship who also used the two-weapon style she learned how to attack with her offhand as well. When she was old enough she hired on to some merchant ships as a lookout. Quickly they found out she was well worth her pay predicting storms, seeing potential pirates before anyone else, and lending her bow and swords to defending the ship and its crew. Being of very slight build with not much strength she adopted a more subtle route to battle sneaking behind her foes to deal lethal blows while unawares. She did not feel bad for this after all they were trying to ransack the mostly honest merchants, she was just glad to be of help in her own way. These skills she mainly learned as she had to sneak her way through the seedy Dock Ward to make it to her fathers house. One such night she overheard a mugging, three thugs had trapped an older woman and were taking her meager provisions. Without thinking much Allison killed all three and gave their belongings to the woman. This act emboldened her, made her feel good inside like she had a purpose. She found out the thugs belonged to a local thieves guild and she made it her purpose to thwart their plans. She had much success but the guild also figured out who she was and sent assassins after her. After dispatching of the first few assassins they sent a group of six after her. They cornered her and she thought she was done for but a man with the look of a Ranger about him dropped in behind them and helped her kill all of them. She did not get a good look at him but he flashed her a harp-shaped pin before he disappeared. Allison had heard of the Harpers before but had never thought much of them until then. She set out to find them mainly out of curiosity to see what they are really all about, but also for the chance to be a part of something bigger perhaps to thwart something more than just the local thieves guild. After searching for them openly without much luck she has decided that she needs to do something to get their attention and has been thinking of joining an adventuring group. |

Okay, folks. Artalis asked for me to put this here, so I'm doing it. Sorry for the crookedness; I know how to fix it, but I'm a bit lazy (and don't have all night ).
Note, please, that Sage and I haven't talked about this list in a while. I also had to do this from memory (and checking the PHB), so it might not actually be the same one we discussed. I lost a hard drive last fall, which means I lost almost all my little D&D doodles from before that time that I didn't already put here. So anyway, this is dependant on him (and on everyone judging it okay; I've never played with any more than a third level wizard before, so I don't know if this is perfectly balanced; it's just the continuation of patterns).

I forgot to add the bonus spells. It's exactly the same as in the PHB, but the 0-level spells are added. It actually means you get a 0-level spell for just being able to cast 0-level spells, though. But I think orisons and cantrips are highly undervalued . . . .
Any thoughts? |

Assuming that Sage doesn't change anything, he'd get one druid orison per day until he gains another level, at which point he gets two.
This is assuming you're not using the spell-less version from The Complete Warrior, of course. |

No I'm not. I like the regular Ranger best anyways
Now where can I find a list of these orisons? |

In the PHB, of course. Just look in the Spells chapter, go to Druid spells, and look at the 0-level ones. |

Ok, D-brane, I fired off a copy of my character sheet to you. I can post it here as well if that is what people are doing. So far from what I've seen, we are a scrawny lot and can only pray that we do not need to do any heavy lifting.

Hmm... can we just use the PHB values? The only thing I think we should adjust is to add bonus spells for high ability score for 0-level spells (that's what I did for Rondell). I've never understood why casters with high ability scores do not get extra 0th-level spells...
Also, most DMs I've played under allow us to use bonus spells at lower spell slots (i.e. for example, if you are a level 5 wizard you who can cast 3rd-level spells, you can use your bonus 4th-level spells (from your high INT) to cast a 0th, 1st, 2nd or 3rd level spell, even if you can't cast 4th-level spells yet...) |

Wood Elf: I really like the concept and backstory of Allison Rosamond. You've inspired me to push forward with Rondell's story!
Expect more tidbits from him in the next few days... Sounds like we'll be quite a cool party so far!! |

Rondell Rivenstone's Journal, Volume III
26 Highsun 1370 DR -- The Research Continues
"Well, it's been over 12 years since the Bhaal Water started flowing from under Boareskyr Bridge, and my cousins, uncles, aunts and friends living along its banks have not successfully cured the river. Sure, there was a time or two where their efforts actually paid off, for a day or two, even a tenday once, but eventually the river turned black again, sending all our alchemists back to work.
So here I am, again floating downriver on the black murk one more time. There's one good thing about it though: it sure keeps nasty animals at bay! (and other nasty non-animal visitors, may The Sly One steer my barge away from the malevolent ones!) If it's not too windy, I'm having a pretty leisurely time out here, especially since old Stolig finally agreed for me to coat his barge with that gummy, waterproof bookbinding glue I finally received from far off Raven's Bluff. Thanks to an adventurous barrel-maker over there, who found that the waterproof glue also worked well on wood, the stuff has now found countless uses over the years. I bet the glue's creator, the Wizard Guild's Official Bookbinder famous and wise for his Alchemy and Vastian Lore, Sir Fellow Gnome Smiltan Pebbleshade, did not know that his "mundane" glue would bring him more fame than his accomplished skills with illusions! Oh well, the barge has finally been coated, so I can't complain about Stolig's grumpiness anymore... maybe I'll buy the darn thing from him next summer; he doesn't use the thing anyway, except perhaps to have me pay him a visit. There's no way I would skip on visiting him when I go by the Boareskyr: I'll try to hammer this out in his old skull! he needs the coin anyway, the people living there are not as free-giving as in the gnome communities downriver, or what's left of them...
Which brings me back to my main subject. A lot of gnomes have moved south to the Chionthar since the water turned foul... many depended on it and had no well. Burrows are turning up to be real cheap now, and half of them are now inhabited by gnome alchemists flocking from all corners of Faerūn, coming to help in this effort. Agricultural support for these workers is turning pretty scarce locally, and I've found myself ferrying more potatoes in the last three year's runs than my usual load of 'earthen fruits'. As much as I want to help, I'm not in the business of moving big loads of produce, and this barge already feels too small for my guilty conscience! Perhaps I could help them another way...
I don't know what I'll do. I've already been carrying messages from the Chionthar's alchemists that are too old to come here and make the trip themselves, and that since 'Black Water Day One'. I've returned replies to them, and for the last two years I've been adding notes of my own, some - hmm, maybe just a few - of which makes half a bit of sense... But I have to start thinking of bringing in some BIG merchants over here! Big hey... hmmm... perhaps even human ones! they ARE big and would probably be able to carry more potatoes than us gnomes... hmm... in fact, thank the Lord in Disguise that we have them! yes!! they are perfectly suited for this!
Yes... if I don't bring more trade to this river, it will literally die. The efforts of our gnomes must be supported by food, supplies and coins. I'll start running this idea to the elders that are left over on this side... then to the elders south along the Chionthar. At the end of next year, I can run it to the Big Folk of Baldur's Gate, and the year after, to the elders of Gullykin.
At least a few folks up there *have* to have it in them to recognize such a worthy, noble and epic goal! Yes... definitely. Perhaps I can even start to think about bothering the Knights of the Shadowy Cloak about this. It's not like they've been real busy over here since the Bhaal Water materialized! he he he! If the gnome community could trust someone to silently keep an eye on all those new and 'very helpful' merchants, assuming my plan works, it's them."
Rondell Rivenstone --> As good and foreseeing Baravar teaches us, "Devote yourself to your art and those you love with equal fervor, for one must have a reason to live beyond mere survival." |

No, I'm not changing anything. I'd just assumed that this was what we were using. Afterall, it's tested well time and again in my own campaigns, and I'm looking forward to hearing what others think once they see the revised spell charts in action.
