I am currently playing an evocation specialist wizard and I recently found a lesser rod of maximize, which I have enjoyed using. Anyway, this got me thinking about getting a rod of quicken once I can save up enough gold. That train of thougt led me to casting Evard's Black Tentacles followed up by a quickened fireball. Grappled characters are denied their DEX to AC, but does being grappled affect your reflex saves at all? It seems like it should, but I couldn't find it in writing.

Overall I would say if grappled, you are bound and Reflex save is at -5, though you can still save. Do as you will.

Actually, you aren't helpless if you are grappled, only if you are pinned. Also, the -5 is not a penalty to AC, rather it indicates the Dex modifier added to your AC. Since your Dex is treated as a 0 when helpless, the Dex modifier that you add to your AC changes to -5. For example, if your DEX score is an 18, then your Dex modifier to AC is a +4, when helpless this changes to a -5, which effectively gives you a -9 penalty to AC.
