Got Grand History today... good job Brian/Ed and all the rest! The sidebars are cool. My favorites so far: the gnome child diary and the dwarf spawn musings... |

Wow. I also got my this evening.
It looks very good. The artwork is recycled, but in most cases (warforged not included) it works well. I am impressed. With the sidebars it is a truly topnotch book. You should be very proud of the work. |

Just got my hands on a copy last night. I was impressed with Brian and Ed's work, and as always Kim Mohan's touch is a welcome sight. As stated above the sidebar and are a great addition. It was also nice to see the information on Jammdath (sp) finally get published.
The only detractor is the frikkan recycled artwork, come on WoTFrikkanC.....hire Val Valusek to do some new, fresh line art or something new, for crying out loud, stop taking the cheap ass road and recycling artwork.
Props to you brian and Ed! Well done. |

Hear, hear! Val Valusek's art was always delightful. Her line art is second only to Larry Elmore's line art. |

Brian told us over at WotC boards that the art budget was 'sparse', and it was a choice between new art and quality maps.
Art is pretty, but maps are useful. I think Brian and co. made the correct decision, given what little resources were available. |

Hey, I thought that particularly little contribution of mine got dropped. I was quite fond of it too. Thanks.

After my quick perusal of the "end times," I started this book in earnest. After the first twenty pages or so, I absolutely love this book (not that there was any doubt). The only downside to the whole thing is the number historical "artifacts" that I'm afraid with never be referenced or followed up on ever again, which would be a horrible waste.
This book, and the work that went into it, are why I love the Realms. Thank you to everyone that was a part of this. |

I got mine today too! I love it! I knew I would, but it's nice to be proved right (again). Thanks to Brian for all his hard work, and devotion as well as the work of the authors and creators whose work he compiled the data from and those that added and continue to add new lore to our beautiful, wonderful, fantastic Faerun. *sniff*
Anyway, down to business: during a quick perusal I noticed seomthing that I wondered whether Brian (or anyone) could clarify for me - I couldn't find a date for the "Year of Boiling Moats" mentioned on page 46.
Anyone have a complete Roll of Years and fancy checking it?

Ouch. I'm still awaiting the opening of my brand spanking new (well, to me) FLGS as it's been closed all week since I've been here due to the owners being on holiday. Fingers crossed I can get my copy on Monday... |

Okay, I'm confused...
Page 16: quote: c. -8800 DR
The Great Caverns of Bhaerynden collapse, creating the Great Rift [-9000,-7600]
Page 19: quote: c. -7600 DR The drow empire of Telantiwar falls with the collapse of the great cavern of Bhaeryndren. Drow refugees claim lesser caverns to the north, south, east and west of the newly formed Great Rift, establishing cities such as Llurth Dreier, the City of Ooze.
Now, I can buy that the empire struggled and stuck around for 1200 years after the cavern came tumbling down. But, we have two references to it having collapsed, and the second uses the phrase "newly formed" -- which doesn't apply to something 1200 years old.
So what's the deal? |

The c.-8800 DR date is from Shining South p. 170. The c.-7600 date comes from Races of Faerûn p. 11. Doesn’t exactly resolve the issue, but that’s where the discrepancy came from. |

I got my copy yesterday and I'm really impressed. I thought the timelines might put me to sleep after a few pages but instead I found I'd read half the book before I decided I really needed to go to bed.
One question. Did the online version Brian initially worked on have the sources for all the entries? I understand not having that included in the published book but it seems likely the information is compiled somewhere. There was so much new stuff here, to me anyway, that I found myself wondering where it all came from.
Even my wife was impressed with the formatting and presentation and she thinks this DnD interest of mine is some sort of relatively benign character flaw. Excellent work Brian. |

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

A very good interview and quite interesting. And what a nice surprise to learn that the next tome of the Candlekeep Compendium will be released soon. |

Okay, I think you may have missed Wooly's point.
Bhaerynden was originally a Dwarven Kingdom, and THAT collapsed in -8800 DR.
Telantiwar was Drow Kingdom, and it came into being when they drove the Dwarves out of Bhaerynden. The city and cavern used the same name, so the city was probably destroyed (collapsed), but the cavern remained for the Drow to rebuild in.
In -7600 DR the cavern itself collapsed, exposing the underground realm to sunlight from above, wherein the Drow abandoned the settlement.
Later, the Dwarves returned and created a new kingdom on the spot called The Great Rift.
So, the first reference is to the Dwarven realm and city, while the second is to the cavern itself.

No, he got my point: there are two references, 1200 years apart, to the caverns collapsing and forming the Great Rift. |

I finally got my copy today. Great work Brian. I love it! Of course I read the last page first which made me sad. But then I started at the beginning and have been completely engrossed ever since. |

Unfortunately my local dealer didnt get the GHotR with this weeks shipment, but im hoping to get my 2 copies next week
As with many other posters, this one book has been the most anticipated in Years(!) for me as i've used the original .PDF version since it's first 'print' and it has been invaluable reference material (and even more so, past time reading) ever since i first discovered it. So, once more, Thank you Brian (and of course, all the other contributors aswell) for all the time and effort you've put into this over the years!
Now, as i dont have my copies yet, i think that i read from somewhere that the references in the dates to the material they originated from, arent in par with the .PDF version. Any truth to this ? (Also havent read the excerpts, as i want to save the whole experience until i open up the real deal )

To answer what I *think* you're asking... No, the individual entries do not have specific source references, anymore. It makes sense, though, since they are adding entries that had not previously seen print. |

Yes, that was what i was asking Thank you for the answer. But imho it would not have hurted to keep the existing references, as those were a big part why the original was such a great reference material.
