I am modifying stuff before we actually started to really play FR with 3.5...
but what the hell.
The magic-reliant improvement of AC really bugged me even way before 3.0 was a glint in Wizards eye. In Unearthed Arcana the designers suggest to implement a level based bonus to AC in swashbuckling campaigns, I think skill also works in heavy armor, maybe not as much but still good enough.
Here is my idea now: every time a character's BAB allows him to make an extra attack his inherent AC bonus is raised by 1. ATT +6/+1 AC+1, +11/+6/+1 AC+2 etc. with a max of +4 at lvl 20 for a good(or very good, not sure atm) BAB. Heavy armor reduces this by 2, Medium armor by 1.
This way I at least can say these guys can also defend themselves a little better.

I'd have to think it over...but when a fighter gets 4 attacks that is +4 to the AC...and heavier armour reduces it...+4 AC at > Lv 16 isn't a whole lot of difference making...I would actually have heavier armours increase the bonus...as the adventurer has worn armour forever, learns to roll with blows, etc.
another armour/defence rule for d20 systems comes from the Conan RPG...where there is no AC per say, it is replaced by a dodging system and armour gives you an amount of damage reduction |
