I found this on the FR mailing list. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

That was amazing, especially his bit about the more powerful NPC's in the Realms. It's exactly how I view it. They're to be flavor in your campaigns and not major players.
Overall, a very enlightening interview. Thanks for the link! |
And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

Good stuff!! I, as a DM have always played my FR campain after my own criterias. But it is refreshing to know that the creator of FR(All fall to their knees and chant "we are not worthy!!") has the same opinion of how the game should be played as i do. :) |

I loved the voices he did. For instance the peddler who talked of the Seven Sisters. I wonder if he uses a different one for every NPC in his game? It interests me as I am sort of a voice actor myself, that being the current degree I am going for. |

Well, we managed to hear his female voices at spin a yarn, those were most interesting. So aye, I believe he does have a voice for most NPC's. |

I'd always been under that impression too; THO always refers to Ed as a fantastic actor. |

Very interesting to hear Ed’s opinion about the powerful NPC. A clear refutation of one of the most common points of criticism levelled against the Realms. Hopefully that will silence some of the more vocal Realms haters – or maybe not. |

Since Ed has said the same things for ever, and since the 'too many powerful characters' thing has never had anything to it except in terms of preference for a smaller-scale setting, I imagine not. |

I would love to see Elminster show up in a novel the way Ed mentions in the interview. And not an Elminster novel, either. Maybe in one of the Dungeons novels with his "secret passage three rooms back," thing. Not have him act much at all, except to give a snide comment or two and then blip out. Like his cameo at the start of Spellfire. Just a chance to see his "blip about and blast things (or be sarcastic)" routine from the other side.
For a real fun time, pair this up with Liriel... |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Thanks for the link Kuje!
Happily listening while I get ready for tomorrow's game...

09/20/2008: Tiger Army at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. You wouldn’t believe how many females rode it out in the pit. Santa Cruz women are all of them beautiful. Now I know to add tough to that description. 6/27/2008: WALL-E is about the best damn movie Pixar has ever made. It had my heart racing and had me rooting for the good guy. 9/9/2006: Dave Mathews Band was off the hook at the Shoreline Amphitheater.
Never, ever read the game books too literally, or make such assumptions that what is omitted cannot be. Bad DM form, that.
And no matter how compelling a picture string theory paints, if it does not accurately describe our universe, it will be no more relevant than an elaborate game of Dungeons and Dragons. --paragraph 1, chapter 9, The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene |

Considering, as Faraer just said, Ed has said the same things in his replies here at Candlekeep, I have some doubts about that.
And with unreliable online sources, like the FR Wiki, perpetuating some of these myths as factual truth, only makes this worse (they're unreliable because the entries can be easily changed and are open to literally thousands of interpretations). If Realms fans want they real world about such topics, they're better off getting it straight from the man responsible for the world's creation -- and that's Ed, right here at Candlekeep.

I loved the interview. Ed just knows how to make people have fun and learn about realms lore with the ease. He just inspires one to game at a higher level. Greenwood just rocks. I loved his advice too. Game on every one. Do it for Ed and yourself. |
