P.S Would a "Who/what's Hot in the Realms" thread be just a little too geeky/RL-escapist, or isn't this fantasy?

It's fine, we all need to "escape" now and then. |

EDIT: As this is my 1000th post, I thought I'd drop in to note . . . that this is my 1000th post.
As Wooly observes below, I think the location of this post (in a cheerful discussion about fantasy sex) and its tone (whimsical in its bemused hypocrisy) is a pretty neat and trim picture of myself as a Candlekeep scribe.
Thanks for a thousand posts of good memories, Candlekeep! |

Heya,
Sex is a big part of our games, though we generally run the Forgotten Realms as a trifle more prudish than Ed Greenwood does. It's more amusing to have the Obarskyr family be this collection of gigantic lotharios rather than have it just be business as usual in Faerun. It also adds a bit of spice that it's a similiar quirk of Elminster.
Frankly, I don't get the impression the family unit as we know it exists in the Forgotten Realms. It's very much a progressive society well above and beyond our own existing one. In FR canon, if you introduce two men and say they're husband and husband then no one will bat an eyelash. Ditto, single parenthood and multiple children spouses with completely no stigma attached to brothels.
One of my favorite moments in game was where a PC bedded Larael, not knowing who she was, and ended up summoned before Khelben. He was positively wetting his pants but, well, of course Khel doesn't care. Khel gets sex from his wife and she gets sex from everyone else. Not much of a sex drive on that one (well, Larael would disagree but she's woman enough for many men...)
Pausing for a second, really, that's so amazingly far removed from all but a small portion of our society that it's actually pretty damn unlikely that the typical Forgotten Realms villain would have families and loved ones. The Super CoupleTM of villainy is Ashemmi and Semmenon with apparently him having no real problem with the fact his lover bearing the child of another man.
The only time we see genuine jealousy seems to be the result of political or merchantile activities. Take, for example, the Moonflower dynastic strife and the problems there are purely the result of the desire for the throne on the part of the villains.
Manshoon, Fzoul, and Halastar Blackcloak are three villains off the top of my head. I can't imagine under any circumstances the former two would have families or children because they're the most narcissitic men on the planet. Halastar Blackcloak is a romantic but I doubt that he'd ever become obsessed with a woman enough that he'd take her down to his cave. Gromph Baenre executed his daughter's mother in cold blood.
Frankly, it's odd but even villains aren't particularly possessive about their lover as if there was literally no value to marriage except as a societal contract. The Crucible has Malik horrified at his wife's adultery but only in the context that he's going to be humiliated by it. There's no sense of entitlement there or anger that other settings could get away with.
I don't think people quite get how consistent that the Realms has depicted The People There do Not Think like Earth People Regarding Relationships. The most realistic relationship was the Spine of the World and that oddly felt UTTERLY divorced from the realms as I knew them.
I think that it causes a lot of people to shy away from "serious" realmstelling because the culture is so difficult for people to broach in many ways.
Oddly, I had the same description of the Realms and religion being utterly removed from "real world" but internally consistent. In the realms, you have absolutely no imperiative to be "Good" from society. No, seriously, if you want to say 'screw the 9-5, I want to rape and pillage' then you have ample religions that say that it is great to do so. Talk about moral relativism, you have societies built around completely anti-social behavior.
Just join the Zhents if you want to be a selfish bast. You'll get Banite Heaven and some slave girls.
If you remove sexual moores from society and religious guilt, you have a pretty alien cultural mindset. |

Have to disagree here old chap. I would in no way claim about the realms tha it is "It's very much a progressive society well above and beyond our own existing one"
The more reading and research I do on medievil europe, the more and more it sounds much like the Realms! Seeing as how we have evolved and progressed since then, I would say some might see the Realms morays as "turning back the clock" to a more liberated and sexually free time. |
