I'm wondering who has plans to go to Gencon Indy 2006? It's only a month away and so I've finally got around to making a thread about it.
I'm also wondering if any of you want to meet or get together and have a Candlekeep group that can pester Ed and the others that are going to be there.... :) If anyone is interested in doing so, drop a reply in this thread or send private replies.
My own plans have me arriving on Thur's and leaving on Monday. Forgot to add that my room is at the Hilton Indy, or I hope it is at least. Here's a list of some of the events. (My thanks to Elaine for posting these, I hope that she doesn't mind that I snagged them from her. :))

Well met
Excellent Kuje Many thanks for putting this schedule up. There's certainly some interesting events and I envy those who are to attend. Ensure that ye gather as much secrets and lore as possible and return here to report
As Kuje stated, it would be nice for a number of scribes from Candlekeep to meet up at GENCON and i'd be interested to hear of those who are attending. |

Good point and maybe we should come up with our own badges or name tags or something that will let us know who each other are?.... |

Just out of interest is the location of GEN-CON right next to the Hyatt or the Hilton in Indianapolis? I did the sums the other day for a 5-day trip and it equates to about AU$5k. No budget for that this year but next year may be a big chance.

The Hilton that I'm staying in, when I called them about it, is about 3 blocks from the Convent Center, according to the people at the hotel. |

Back in the spring, I was planning on making this trip, but after my ex-wife chose to drag me through the court system to get our lawyers to agree on the exact same thing that I had already offered her before she decided we needed to go to court, that pretty much ate up the budget for the trip . . . hopefully next year. |

Only $5,000AUS, from Adelaide? Neat.
Hmmm... Adding in the extra $1,000 or so to cover the extra distance from Perth, I'd be looking at about $6,000 (and a bit).
Definitely something I can plan for next year.

George, GenCon Indy is held in the RCA Dome, which has its own website, and is connected via a "skywalk" (covered, "inside" walkways) to the Downtown Indianapolis Marriott, the Downtown Hyatt, and the Circle Center (someone correct me if I'm misremembering the name of this) Mall, which in turn (we're walking blocks here, indoors) with the Hilton and a few other hotels. The "Indianapolis Convention Center" website has a stylized map of this walkway and its connections; if you're looking on Mapquest or using other Internet tags, the RCA Dome is where the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League play, and it's due south of the Marriott, which is in turn due south of the Indianapolis state capitol building. Ed always drives down, of course, so I'm not "up" on the details of flying in to Indy, but e-mail me if you want to talk restaurants, parking, et al. love, THO |

All threads must have at least one thread-jacking. It's one of those things Big Al hasn't put in the CoC, yet.
So, who's going to this year's GenCon? |

I will be there on Saturday only. I would love to get together to chat a little. I live in the next county over but I work down near the airport. I'll be easy to recognize: A big, brown haired, glasses wearing (younger) middle-aged guy towing a dark haired two year old around the exhibit hall for his (the kids) first GenCon.

Well,
What I'm wondering, and maybe some of the authors or game designers can give us some ideas, since they've been there before, or anyone else that has been to Gencon before, is this: What are some good places to meet up at the Convent Center or around there?
If we knew that, we could possibly decide to meet at one of those places. :) |

A restaurant/bar called the Ram is gamer friendly. But that is outside of the Convention Center. The place is big. I would say we decide on a vender and a time and meet at their booth/display.

Unless your planning on becoming a nun, I wouldn't suggest meeting at the convent center (sorry, I couldn't resist). A good place to meet up is the small cafeteria right in front of the main doors of the dealer's room (and near a set of doors that lead out of the center). If you meet outside of the center of the center, it is more or less difficult depending on where your hotel is. I've stayed in the Radisson (about 10 minute walk to the center), the Embassy Suites (maybe 7 minutes), and am staying in the Radisson again this year ( it costs less and one of the other Silven people already had it, so I can share).
I am more than happy to meet up with anyone, as long as it doesn't conflict with the signing I'm doing with Eric Boyd on Friday at 11:30 (thanks Elaine for setting all this up and I hope I'll see some of you at the signing).
If anyone is interested, Silven Publishing - the company for which I work as PR & Marketing Manager - is holding a contest between 2-5:30 on Thurs and 2-4:00 on Friday and Saturday. It's basically American Idol style where the contestants propose an idea for a d20 game supplement (setting, adventure, or rules supplement). Then, the judges critique and weed down for the second and third/final round using various tasks and criteria. The winner receives a contract to write a book for the company (and odds are future writing jobs as well). It costs $6:00 to get in, but regardless of the place you come in, you will receive more than $6:00 worth of prizes (a t-short, coupon for our pdf products, and other stuff). It's somewhat tricky to get people to sign up for this sort of thing prior to the convention, so it's tricky to tell how many people we will have (assuming we might the 20 minimum (I think it's 50 or 60 max, though it'd be really surprising if we got that) which I suppose might not happen if we don't get enough people. Anyway, if you are interested, you can go to http://registration.gencon.com/regsystem/listevents2.cgi. Just type in Silven into the "title contains box" and you'll get the event. You only can sign up for the first part (because we won't know who makes it to the other rounds until they happen). |

This is a good idea and it's probably a better spot to meet, so what do you all think?
It'll help to know whose going to be where on which day as well.
Since this is my first time to Gencon, I'm taking THO's and Ed's advice and I'm just going to the dealers room, the book signings that I'm interested in going to, Spin a Yarn, of course, and Secrets of the Realms.

So how many of us are going to try and be going then Kuje?
And Mistress THO! A Car ride with Ed from Canada? Must I be happy or fear for you? :P
But yes, you have all the names correct. Like I've said, I live just an hour and half south of all of that area, I might still get wild hair and go all four days. I dont know if I'll get this sort of chance again so why not you know?
I support the idea of having some sort of Candlkeep Badge or something so we can try to reconize everyone, even if just three of us will meet up :P
Edit: I'm sorry but I must ask, Mistress will we see you but more then likely not be introduced to you at GenCon this year? |

Now I'm dying of curiosity as to whether that's part of the Ram chain, because if it is. . . . well, let's just say the Erik might be found with a notebook and a hurricane or two, musing in the back corner.

Yes, yes it is.
As for us authors, I kinda get the sense that some of us might be hanging around the signing booths a fair bit (what with all those signings). Totally possible to "run in" to us.

Hello-
OK - I've been to GenCon several times before - but never in Indy. :)
However - I do have a long-time friend in INdy - so this will work for that too!
I'd have to suggest Thursday - maybe 5-6PM - after the last even Kuje has listed for 8/10 (* 4PM SW minis demo *) It would be the first day of the Con - late in the day - and we could share schedules and such to see when we will be doing various things. I would take that suggestion of the cafeteria right outside the main doors of the cafeteria that EytanBernstein suggested. (*thanks for the tip!*) We should ALL know where the dealers room will be! LOL
As for badges - if someone can come up with the general design - and make it so that it fits inside a standard rectangular pin-badge - I can bring the pin-badges, as I have a bunch.
I think the issue with a t-shirt would obvoiously be copyright-related. However - I imagine - if we had a design - we could each make our own if we wanted to. From what I gather - you can buy iron-on stuff to print them out on your own computer - and then afix them to a shirt of your choosing..... Problem is - in both cases - I'm not artistically inclined AT All, at least not visually!
So - thats what I'd suggest!

I am collecting the D&D Minis. I would be more than willing to trade with people. You can send me a PM here with your email listed - and I can send you my minis list. Thanks!
Successfully traded with Xysma! |
