In the first edition set, this port is mentioned as one of the few places Evermeet's ships dock besides Waterdeep and Neverwinter. Anyone know where it is?

From Ed -
"This small island realm [of Eskember] never made it into the Old Grey Box for the same reason Evermeet got shoved several thousand leagues east (closer to mainland Faerun): accurate maps of my 'home' Realms campaign would have been map panel after map panel ('panel' meaning one fit-the-box folded rectangle of those fold-out map pages) of mostly empty water stretching west, with only a few islets and island chains scattered thereon. So to 'find' Eskember, get out the Old Grey Box mapsheet labelled "1031XXXX0703," and look at the Moonshaes. Start at the map panel occupied by the Wave Rocks, the Gull Rocks, and the Moonshaes, and go due west (following the "to Evermeet" arrow that's helpfully floating on the waves there) for two panels of almost-blank sea (the second invisible panel has a tiny cluster of shoals called "Wash Rock" on it, at about the same latitude and position in the panel as the Gull Rocks occupy in the panel you're examining). In the western half of the third panel of proceeding westwards lies Evermeet (at least, as it was situated in the original Realms). Now shift southwest from this panel, diagonal corner to diagonal corner, into a new panel of empty sea. Go west along this new line of latitude the full length of another panel, and as you enter the panel beyond, imagine it dotted with numerous small islands and rocks, and dominated by two larger islands. One of these large isles, about 2-o'clock in orientation to the center of the panel, is a 100-mile-long, fairly slender (30 miles wide at best) east-west crescent (center bow towards the north) that's wild jungle over VERY rough terrain (rock ridges and little gorges cut by numerous small streams that all find their own ways to the sea without ever combining into larger rivers)."

Hello-
OK - I have a single, fairly simple question.
Will I need to go out and buy an entire Barell of INk for my printer?
I looked at the offered link - quickly decided to print that - lest it somehow become lost - and then went backwards from there -and noticed the FR archives for the list, which apparently - is still going!
Some secondary questions:
Is there much information stored in the archives just waiting to be plundered, er - I mean - saved and cherished I wonder?
Also - since the list seems to still be active - does anyone know of the current usage level - and how useful it is?
Lastly - is there any 'relationship' between the list people and here within Candlekeep? It seems to me that some sort of index to the useful lore contained therin would be a good thing...
Oh - and since I did not mention it already - WoW! Lots of info on a far-off place that I have never heard of (besides probably reading it in the 'grey box' and promptly forgetting it. Again - WoW! This place gets more intriging than ever every day!

REALMS-L is the granddaddy of Forgotten Realms discussion groups.quote: Is there much information stored in the archives just waiting to be plundered, er - I mean - saved and cherished I wonder?
Yes. I have a compilation of the posts from Ed -- some of which are on AJA's site -- and there's a great wealth of years of fascinating posts from Realms authors and others, many of whom post here too.quote: Also - since the list seems to still be active - does anyone know of the current usage level - and how useful it is?
With the increased popularity of the web-based forums, REALMS-L traffic is currently low. But it's still a useful resource. (Why are you surprised that it's active?) |

Hello-
I am not particularly surprised - just was curious as to the relative usefulness of the current usage.
If there is a good amount of info stored therin - mayhaps someone (not necessarilly volunteering - but maybe... ) should catalog the infoprmation in some way - any suggestions as to the best way to go about that?

Hello-
No - I didnt. However - if I did - I could think of better options for the money! LOL
Truly - it would take a long time, huh?
Maybe if there was interest - we could come up with a volunteer network - and have people go into specific chunks and catalog it - and then mesh it all together.
Do people think this is a worthy project? I have as-yet not looked at the archives (besides what was linked) and wonder whats there.... I'll have to take a peek tomorrow after I get home from work.

Well, I've taken a lot of the Ed, Eric and Steven Realmslore that has been presented on the FRML and compiled it for use in my FR FAQ for Candlekeep (when the material relates to such FAQ).
And Kuje has included some specific posts from the Mailing List also in his compilations of author and game designer replies at his URL.

Yup,
I troll the mailing list and wotc boards looking for replies from the game designers that they don't post here and then I add them to my files. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
