Hey, just heard about this one. Apparently, for a 1st level spell, you do 1d6 points of damage to anything with less than 50 hp for 4d4 rounds. Great merciful Loviatar! Surely this should be subdual damage? Anyone know anything more about this 1st level monstrosity?

It is 1st level and it doesn't do subdual, nope. :)

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

If theres isnt a saving throw each round or a ranged Touch attack then that spell is seriously broken!

No save at all. Not sure how to figure out if it has a ranged touch attack.

I think by virtue of the fact that it is a Power Word spell that it doesn't. All of the other Power Words you just utter at one opponent and BAM . . .

Check the body of the spell and the target line; see acid splash, scorching ray and magic missile.

Neato spell

It's indeed quite broken for a 1st level spell...maybe there is an upcoming errata for it

And, gasp, shock, I will finally say that I found a spell that I'd never allow in my game without some changes and it is this spell because this spell is insane!

Well...I would do only one change: make the damage subdual (if you reach a certain treshold where your mind cannot stand any more pain, you fall unconcious)

But doesn't subdual damage become lethal damage if it exceeds a certain threshold?

<ponders> 1st Level Kobold Sorcerer with this spell. Too bad my Players have more than 50 HPs now though
Means I'll have to look at the other Power Word spells.

That's INCREDIBLY overpowered! How on EARTH is this so powerful?!? That has a higher damage potential than fireball! (1d6x4d4rounds=maximum damage potential of 96. Max for fireball is 60.) Heck, consider the average damage of this thing. 25. TWENTY FIVE. That means that with two of these, anything with 50 hp or lower is DEAD. NO SAVING THROW. NO CHANCE TO AVOID IT. This is almost as broken as the 3.0 version of harm!

Volo's misunderstood. He's not an idiot. He's a FLAMING idiot!

The Power Word X spells have always worked off hp; it actually makes them more useful on occasion.

Yep, just means I have to brutalize my PCs first before using them....
