I was just wondering. Upon reading the substitution level for 1st level elven wizards, I had to think this . . . what are you giving up to gain this extra benefit? You could almost argue that specialized wizards are just "options" themselves, so how can you give up the ability to take an option to get another option?
I guess the main thing is, this substitution level just seems to make it look like what the designers are really saying is this, "elves are better wizards than anyone." I don't see why you would be a specialist as an elven wizard if you use this option.
But I want to be open minded. If anyone has used this substitution level in your campaign, let me know how it has worked. I just have a hard time seeing this as balanced.

Well did a little looking, though did not find the write up for this subsitution level. Perhaps you can answer a question. Does the substitution level still allow for Summon familiar, Scribe Scroll both that are available only at first level as features? The loss of a familar and the bonus feat clearly can make up for extra spell slots.
As for options you can take one or the other at first level instead of both does make sense to me. That stated to prevent a specialized Wild Elven Wizzard. If there is no cost to offset the features of the SL I would indeed say it is broken. |

Ker repeated this without understanding. "After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first." Yes, you still get summon familiar and scribe scroll, the only "sacrifice" you make is that you give up the ability to specialize in a school of magic. |

I thought the same thing when I read it, untill I reread it. The bonus spell is at the highest spell level you can cast, not every spell level you can cast as it is with a specialist.

I've read that over at least five times, and until you pointed that out, I still didn't get it. How the heck did I miss that, as its written pretty plainly. It still seems odd that the only thing you are giving up is the ability to specialize though.
Thanks for the clarification! |
