Okay, so I just started reading The Thousand Orcs. It's my first time reading it, and my first time reading an RAS book for at least 18 months...
Right in the beginning, there's multiple references to Ellifain and her death. There's also a reference to her having been the child Drizzt saved on that surface raid, when he was still in Menzoberranzan.
But I'm not remembering too much about her other than that... She was the elf he encountered when he left his mark on the tree, right? When did she die, and what were the exact circumstances? I've not the time, nor the inclination (at the moment) to go back thru those books to find this out.

*all spoilers ahead*
This account will lack in details, as I'm not a detail-oriented person and I don't have the book with me right now. If you'd rather wait for someone who's more adept at storytelling and detail-gathering, you might wnat to skip my description :)
She died to Drizzt at some point during their search for Wulfgar - or at some point after that (it was in that series).
They had gone into a cave after some pirates - it was a secret port that the pirates were using. Ellifain in disguise had joined the pirate band with the hope that Drizzt would meet up with them with his history of being a bit of a pirate-chaser.
At some point they actually do fight. It was quite a close fight - she had been training with fighters that were experts in 2 weapon fighting style to prepare specifically for Drizzt. She does some trick that essentially ends up with both her and Drizzt being mortally wounded. Cattie-Brie comes in at the end of the fight and sees them both lying there. Drizzt begs her to save Ellifain's life - Cattie-brie has one healing potion with her - but Cattie-brie saves him instead.
I hope this helps jog your memory some. I don't remember if this was part of the Legacy of the Drow series or the Paths of Darkness, though I'm leaning towards the former. |

The Ellifain thing was part of Sea of Swords. Her alias resembles a Shampoo brand, if memory serves. |

Ok, Mr. Wooly, I think I can help you on this issue. In the "Homeland" novel, probably around 1327 DR, Drizzt took part in a raid on the surface, where the drow who were with him butchered a gathering of surface elves. It was that event which led Drizzt to see the truth about his people and flee from Menzoberranzan. Among those surface elves, there was only one survivor, a girl called Ellifain. She grew with a deep hatred for the drow and the heroic reputation Drizzt was achieving in the North was driving her insane (it is not crystal clear if she recognized him as one who took part on that raid, but it would be possible). So, she left her home and went into adventuring, training herself in two-swords fighting style for an impendind battle against Drizzt. In the novel "Sea of Swords", she joins (pursuing the hints of a diviner, who gave her some clues where she could met Drizzt) a pirate crew led by a woman called Sheila Kree. This Sheila Kree had Wulfgar's warhammer, so Drizzt&Co went to take it back. In the pirate's hideout, Drizzt and Ellifain (who was disguised as a male using the name of Le'lorinel) finally met and do battle. Drizzt (who did not recognize Ellifain) manages to defeat her, but, as a result of a Fireshield spell, they both end mortally wounded. Fortunately, Drizzt's friends appear just in time (as usual) to give Drizzt a healing potion and save his life, while Ellifain dies, this leading to a lot of remorse and navel gazing for Drizzt in the Hunter's Blades trilogy. |

I believe she is aware that it was Drizzt from her childhood - I recall a scene I believe from either the Icewind Dale or the first trilogy (chronologically) where she meets him with several other elves and recognizes his eyes.
She is scarred and has the deep hatred of him because of HOW he saved her life - he slashed her already dead mother into tiny pieces to hide her from the other Drow on his raid, if I recall correctly. That is what gave her the impression that Drizzt was as evil as the rest, as he tried to make it look like his bloodthirst was driving him to mutilate - not just murder - the surface elves. |

Ellifain has always seemed like a nutcase to me, but I`ve never been able to figure out precisely what kind of nutcase she was. |
If I were a ranger, I would pick NDA for my favorite enemy |
