Wow, wow!!

First of all, let me say that I am a HUGE fan of the elven deity Erevan Ilesere! Been playing since 1ED and he's always been my all time fave deity. I've always thought that Erevan never ever really had much attention thrown his way as far as game product or novel stories. It was a bummer to say the least.

Then you come along and take this female elven rogue (Fox) and make her a devoted follower of my favorite of all the Seldarine. (possibly even a Chosen of Erevan, no?) and write such a wicked killer story about all the things I love about rogues who worship the Fey Trickster!!

You rock my socks Erik!! And adding Ynloeths bracer (and a possible hint of his Shattering Swords) to the story was friggen' brilliant. My whole entire 2ED adventures revolved around my elven rogues' guild called "The Rogues of the Laughing Twilight" and they had been searching for The Shattering Swords and it's sister Bracer in the ruins of Hellgate Keep. Now that same adventure campaign and the same elven rogues guild are converted to 3ED and it seems you have picked up on the same possible chase as are we.

How wicked cool is that my friend!!!?

Sooooooo... LOVED the story and hope you keep Fox around and kicking. I can only imagine and look forward to all the tricks, pranks, mischief, chaos, debauchery and serious trouble that are the spices of life for a follower of Erevan Ilesere, that she causes and gets into!

Thanks for the kind words, CEV! I'm glad you liked the story.

I'm quite the fan of Erevan Ilesere -- the Trickster deities always get love from me.

The Shattering Swords are one of my favorite artifacts, and I think it's nothing but cool that you're on a quest to find them. If you want to throw in Yldar or Cythara as characters you may encounter on this quest (the one who's trying to find the swords (and has the Bracer, or at least what he thinks is the Bracer) and his sister, and the other who's bound to stop him at every turn), feel free. I can give my best estimate for what they would be in game terms:

Yldar sun elf fighter 2 / rogue 2 / wizard 4 (ala the 2e F/M/T)
Cythara sun elf wizard 11 / thrall of Graz'zt 2

(Feel free to change the levels as you see fit. In particular, Yldar's only 8th level, while Cythara's 13, under my system.)

No stats on Twilight. Yet.

As for "Chosen of Erevan," I will say that there are a number of chosen running around and I'm forbidden at this time from adding to their ranks, so no, Twilight's not a "chosen," whatever she says to the contrary.

"At this time."

If you think Erevan doesn't get enough press and you'd like to see more of Twilight (certainly a servant of his, if a disgruntled one), you may be interested to note that the Fox shows up in my upcoming novel, Depths of Madness, which is due out in March. I say "shows up" as opposed to "stars," but Twilight can hardly show up without taking center stage (she was originally a supporting character in "Treasure"). The novel's all about her.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with that. A character doesn't need to be a "Chosen" to be a great character.

And here I thought it was my roguish good looks.

I agree. When I was young, I loved reading about the tricky ones (Loki's still one of my favorites), and still do.

And when I say "Trickster deities," I mean "Trickster deities."

Well, I thought I'd just throw this out there, being that I am such a Erevan fanboy, and it seems obvious you enjoy the Fey Jester as much as I. I made this about 2 years ago, but have vamped and re-vamped it to the version here...

Here's what I have, but some of the people in our campaign are iffy and think I need feedback from the boards on this Template.

Chosen of Erevan Ilesere

Also known as The Mischiefmaker

its a template that can be added to any Elf, Half Elf, or Fey creature. A Chosen of Erevan uses the character's statistics and special abilities except as noted below.

Erevans Oath: Chosen of Erevan must be Wild and unruly, mischievous, independent, and utterly unpredictable! They play tricks on others for the sheer joy it gives them. They oppose settled interests of every sort and delight in upsetting both the rule of law & powerful people, and in basically creating mayhem in any shape, form or way possible. They have little to do in formal duties, and minister to the faithful primarily through example, and promoting the skills required to be a mischievous rogue. The chosen MUST seek out a powerful lawful person or creature once a month and cause as much mayhem and chaos as she can in that time before moving on to the next person or creature. Failure to do this results in the loss of her chosen status.

BONUS SPELLS (Sp): Constant~~ Protection from Law, Ventriloquism, False vision, Know protections. At will~~ Invisibility, Change self. 5/day:~~ Cats grace, Mislead. 3/day~~ Word of Chaos, Animate Object. 1/day~~ Timestop, Cloak of chaos.

Erevans Resistance(sp): The chosen has a constant spell resistance 11 + character level vs. spells with the law discriptor or spells cast by lawful creatures.

Smiling entry(Su): The chosen may step through any magical barrier of 6th level or lower as if it didn't exist. He may also step through and bypass any magical trap or glyph of 7'th level or lower as if it didn't exist.

Mocking Laughter(Su): The chosen gains damage reduction 5/+3 against any one that she can make laugh. The target may make a wis. check vs. your Cha. check to see if you make them laugh. If you succeed in making them laugh they cannot harm you as effectively. You disregard 10 points of damage from weapons of +3 enhancement bonus or less a round. This ability may be used at will.

Spell Immunity (Su): The chosen is immune to all these spells as if she were constantly protected by a spell immunity spell.
*Divination
*Tasha's Hideous Laughter
*Hold person
*Orders wrath
*Dispel chaos
*Disintegrate
*Dictum
*Binding
*Power word: (choose any 1 word when becoming a chosen)

Immunities (Ex): The Chosen of Erevan are immune to aging effects and do not physically age. They also are immune to pranks, tricks or mischief caused by any person or creature with less than 12 hit die that cause damage mentally or physicaly.

Faerie Form (sp): This ability allows the chosen to assume the form of any type of faerie, brownie, or sprite (including atomies, brambles, dobies, faerie fiddlers, gorse, grigs, killmoulis, nixies, pixies, quicklings, sea sprites, squeakers, and other similiar fey creatures). The chosen adopts the form of the creature, gaining all of that forms abilities. The chosen also adopts all that forms weaknesses as well. The chosen can change form as many times as desired, within the duration of the spell. The chosen may turn into a sprite and fly away and then turn into a nixie and dive into a lake. The first form adopted has one-quarter of the hit points of the chosen. Subsequent forms carry the current total hit points with them until the origial form is resumed. Each alteration in form takes only 1 second. This ability can be used one time a day, and lasts as many rounds equal to your total character level + your Charisma modifier.

Polymorph Aura(sp): The chosen may use this ability as many times a day equal to her charisma mod. This ability wreathes you in thin, whispy shimmering light, and polymorphs any creature who attacks you in melee. Any creature striking you with its body or handheld weapon deals normal damage, but is polymorphed randomly upon contact. If a creature has spell resistance it applies to the effect. It lasts 1 round per character level. A successful Fort. save (DC22) negates the effect.

Erevan's concealing cloak of jokes(Su): Once a day the chosen of Erevan can summon a black, blue and green cloak that negates all divination magic that is cast on him alone, by anyone that is not at least 7 levels higher than his total character level. In addition, the cloak of jokes also acts just like a Wand of Wonder with 50 charges. The cloak lasts only 13 hours, then at which time it fades away, until it can be summoned again the very next day. If any divination spell is cast on the chosen while wearing the cloak, and the caster of the spell is 7 levels higher than her total character levels, then the cloak gives the chosen a SR 13 plus the total character level versus the spell.

Detect Fey(Su): The chosen can detect fey creatures in a line of sight range at will.

Chaotic Ally (Sp): The Chosen has two options to choose from when summoning. She may summon 1 Ghaele Eladrin one time a day. The second option is that she can summon 1 9HD Nymph twice a week. On becoming a chosen of Erevan you must decide which of the two you will keep to use.

Fury of the Fey (Su): This ability works the same as a Mirror Image spell cast by a sorcerer of 20'th level, except that when an image of the chosen is struck, that image turns into a furious Pixie with all its natural abilities attacking the creature who struck the image for a duration of 3 rounds, or untill the creature or the Pixie is slain. This ability is the result of an ancient pact between Erevan Ilesere and the Pixies. Exactly where the Pixies come from, no one knows. The Pixies of Evermeet say that the summoned pixies do not come from their number, nor is there any evidence that the pixies are summoned or teleported from anywhere on Toril. Most believe that the pixies are actually the spirits of slain pixie warriors who died in service to the Seldarine in ages past. This ability can be used once a day.

Saves: The character adds + 2 as a bonus to all saving throws.

Abilities: Increase from the character as follows: Dexterity
+8, Charisma +4.

Skills: Bluff, Disguise, Hide, and Move silently are class skills, regardless of the character's class.

Feats: (You gain these feats automaticly without meeting their prerequisites) Persuasive, Alluring, Quicker than the eye, and Charlatan.

Climate/Terrain: Same as the character.
Organization: Same as the character, But must be a devoted follower of Erevan Ilesere.
Challenge Rating: Same as the character +5.
Alignment: CG, CN,
Treasure: Same as the character.
Advancement: Same as the charactern

Whew! That's some template -- pretty damn powerful, too!

On first glance (and I'm hardly a gaming expert -- just a fan), it looks like a neat idea and is going good places to me, but get some feedback from the others on the board -- probably best to post this in "General Realms Chat" or take it out of Candlekeep altogether and go to the WotC Forgotten Realms boards. Those people are intense.

General impressions:

I think more should be done with the Charisma modifier, less with Character Level. Clearly, this template is made for rogues and, to an extent, bards as well. Favored Soul of Erevan Ilesere is pretty choice, too. Think about ways it can interlace with those classes. (My mocking laughter note, requiring a perform check, is just such an example.)

A sneak attack ability, for instance -- a number of times a day equal to your Charisma modifer, when you catch a foe off-guard (flat-footed or flanked, ala a sneak attack), you may randomly polymorph the foe. A Fortitude Save DC = 20 + your Charisma Modifier negates this effect. Etc.

Without a limit on the duration of the effect, the Mocking Laughter bit seems a little too powerful -- better if, as a standard action, the Chosen can make a Perform check, and all who can hear the Chosen must make a Will Save DC = the result. Those who fail either suffer a penalty to hit and/or damage or are just incapable of striking the Chosen for a certain number of rounds (perhaps just the next round). I think making it a standard action is an appropriate limitation on the use, but you could make it usable once per day per point of Charisma bonus. If you limit the number of times it can be used, then it's safe to extend the duration to, say, 1d6 rounds + CHA bonus.

The faerie form and summoning faeries and the Change Self at will seem a little redundant. I think the Change Self should stay (what's better than disguise when it comes to pranks?) and I like the concept of turning into faeries as well, though that should be somewhat limited.

The Polymorph Aura is supremely powerful (you could be polymorphing dozens of creatures a round) and should be more limited -- lasts a number of rounds equal to 1d4 + Charisma modifier, perhaps.

Also: Why restrict the alignment to Good or Neutral? Why not Chaotic Evil Chosen of Erevan?

Keep it up! You're giving me good ideas.

Cheers

Holy crappers!! I love those ideas Erick!! Most of them I plan on using, changes and all. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote no doubt. I will leave a link to the thread on the FR boards here once I'm done so you and others can take a look and all that jazz.

I never thought of a chaotic evil follower of Erevan Ilesere, and I think it's wicked wonderful.

Oh yes. Mwahahaha.

Mean-spirited, harmful tricks -- spiteful jokes and pranks that cause lasting damage.

I'm totally playing a CE Auspician in my next Realms campaign.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Twilight also appears in my recently released novel, Depths of Madness, in which she gets to be the main character. And she gets to be naked at least twice as often.

Might I ask who your *first favorite* realms character might be?

[braces self for a possible D-bomb]

Cheers

P.S. Nah, just kidding. I love Drizzt.

Perhaps I'm psychic. :D

No no--sales figures don't lie, and given Drizzt's amazing popularity, I figure it's about 50% likely that a given reader's favorite character in the Realms is Drizzt.

(25% likely that it's Entreri.)

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy.

I'd love to, but I really can't, as it's Wizards' copyright.

You can, however, grab the prologue off the WotC site: http://www.wizards.com/books/downloads/products_frnovel_959727400.zip

Or the companion short story:

I don't do regular book signings, though I generally do at least one or two on the West Coast whenever one of my books comes out. I usually make it to GenCon Indy, and you can find me there (though I'm not sure I can make it to 2008).

Book signings would be announced on my blog: http://eriksdb.livejournal.com

I'm still trying to organise a "Bring Erik to Australia" coalition here.

Or you could always make the trip to Indianapolis in August--I ran into the lovely and talented George Krashos at the convention, so I know it's at least possible.

Cheers
