Thinking of comics, I was just wondering about this. Does anyone remember the Dire Wraiths from Marvel Comic's Rom comics? I know this is out there, but I was wondering about bringing some of them in as creatures that managed to find a way out of their prison (Marvel's Limbo), and into a gate to the Realms. Alternately, since Wraithworld was transported to Limbo in its entirety, what about the PCs wandering through a gate and ending up in this rather unpleasant locations.

Why Dire Wraiths? Because dispite being aliens, the female wraiths were witches, and they powered their starships with magic, and that intrigues me, and makes me think they might fit in as a cameo monster. Don't know that I would do it for sure, but does anyone else remember these nasties, and what do you think of converting them to D&D stats?

The Dire Wraiths were an offshoot of the Skrulls -- and as such, they were shapeshifters as well. I'm thinking doppelgangers might be a good start for this...

I'm not familiar with them... But it sounds workable, and prolly a bit more reasonable than some of my ideas!

For the record, there is at least one instance of a non-WotC crossover with the Realms: Code of the Harpers mentions a Newhon ghoul.

I'm having a hard time explaining what the Dire Wraiths look like, and the males and females look different as well, though neither of them look much like the Skulls they were engineered from (damn Celestial experiments). Suffice to say, they are humanoids, essentially, and when they take someone elses form they shoot their tongue out into the person's forhead and syphon out their memories, leaving them a dried husk. And the females learn sorcerous abilities.

The Dire Wraiths are PERFECT for crossing over into the Realms as your campaign's Big Bad. Frankly, an argument could be made that they've come via spelljammer (other spaceships powered by magic) and conquered the local space from the illithids and beholders and neogi. This happened long ago and their progeny of half-breeds with humans led to the greater doppelgangers. :)

You know, now that you mention it, the females killed off all of the males due to their mishandling of the war with the Spaceknights, so it would make sense for them to crossbreed, perhaps with magic, with indiginous species . . . thanks for brining that up Steven.

Of course, if you really want some odd cross-overs and links with Marvel, why not bring the witches of New Salem across the planes to be an interesting new place hidden away in the Spine of the World (like the Inhumans' Attilan once was....if you don't want to use the Inhumans themselves...).

Oh, I was still just looking for images of the buggers. I loved how they looked in the X-Men issue where they were after Storm and they took over Forge's building, but I was partial to the John Romita Jr. era of art. However, speaking of art, looking at an old image of Hybrid, a wraith/human crossbreed . . . he looks oddly like a doppleganger.

And in another thread I was talking about a scene I haven't had a chance to run, with some cameos at a Mage Fair with Doctor Strange, Clea, Rintrah, Doctor Fate, and Zatana, and Jason Blood in attendance, though not specifically named.

And thought its not really a crossover, I also recently noted that Westgate was the Gotham City of the Realms . . . not matter how hard you try to clean it up, it ends up mired in crime and intrigue again.

And the guy at the hobby shop tried to get me back into comics . . . bah, my wife would kill me.

At any rate, for some reason the Dire Wraiths really stood out in my mind as possible, "yes, they are from another plane, but they kinda fit" monsters. It reminds me of things from other universes that Elminster seems to keep an eye on to keep them from mass invading the Realms (which in turn reminds me of what the Sorcerer Supreme of a given world is suppose to do).

Argh, its a vicious circle, make it stop!

But I really appreciate you input Steven.

I do! (Almost bought the toy, too...)

Interesting idea. Seems to me they'd also be a good villain for spelljammers.

Hey, if they can convert the Star Frontiers races to Spelljammer . . . heck, the Yazarians . . . er . . . Hadozee made it to 3.5 in Stormwrack . . .
