My PCs fought a Monk of the Long Death in Scardale. The monk challenged them after deeming them worthy of his attention after they had dealt with some halfling Dancer gang members. After the PCs had defeated the monk, the cleric of Helm decided that he was honorable (and his player thought that it was ironic) so he stabilized the monk, then paid an innkeeper to nurse him back to health.

The monk is furious, and I am planning on making him a long term villain, but I was wondering what my fellow scribes might speculate would happen to him within his order. I know that the Monks of the Long Death can only challenge one another in certain instances. I have also decided that another group of monks have decided to track down the cleric an exact revenge for the dishonor of their brother, but how would the other monks treat him within the ranks?

Any ideas?

Maybe they regard him as dead but still walking, so they just rectify that problem and voila!, dilemma solved.

I don't think the monk would ever return to his brothers after being subjected to such humiliation. I would see him wondering Faerun alone, searching for the cleric to exact his revenge.

I agree with Xysma. The Monks of the Long Death would probably make this disgraced monk kill the PCs as atonement to the group.

That was actually the track my mind was on as well, that they may not kill him, but he would be on the outs, so to speak. I still think however, that other monks, even those that shun him, will be on the lookout for the cleric and the dwarf as well, to avenge their fallen brother.

KnightErrantJR, here's another suggestion for you.

Since you mentioned about making this monk their long term villain, you could also add another group in the background to manipulate this monk into fighting the PCs. So while your PCs are thinking that this monk is the real villain behind all the troubles they face, it's actually another group masterminding everything. Tricky, eh?

Wheels within wheels, a good idea

Zhentarim? Cult of the Dragon? If your PCs have caused mischief/harm to any powerful organization/individual, perhaps they would manipulate this monk...

I agree that this monk would have to slay the PCs to 'atone' for his defeat.
