Waterdeep comes out in June, anyone else besides me planning on buying this?

I hope Candlekeep continues to be the friendly forum of fellow Realms-lovers that it has always been, as we all go through this together. If you don’t want to move to the “new” Realms, that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with either you or the “old” Realms. Goodness knows Candlekeep, and the hearts of its scribes, are both big enough to accommodate both. If we want them to be.
(Strikes dramatic pose, raises sword to gleam in the sunset, and hopes breeches won’t fall down.)
Enough for now. The Realms lives! I have spoken! Ale and light wines half price, served by a smiling Storm Silverhand fetchingly clad in thigh-high boots and naught else! Ahem . .
So saith Ed. <snip>
love to all,

I've had my copy on pre-order since my Australian online shipping agent listed it in their catalogues in September 2004.

The day that book comes out, I will run down anyone who comes between me and it.

I'll even go buy it on my lunchbreak (assuming it's available then -- LEoF wasn't available until about 4), knowing I can't really flip thru it until I get home from work.

Nah, Kent (the guy who runs the place) had to wait for the shipment to actually arrive. He didn't have it beforehand, like some stores do.

On the other hand, he made sure there was a copy setting aside at the counter for me.

I'll definately buy it. However, it's just to see what has changed and added. For the basics of the CoS I'll still use the 2nd edition box setting.

I'll go with the wild assumption that fans of the upcoming Waterdeep gaming product might also be interested in the Waterdeep novel. If so...check out the following I found in an Elaine Cunningham blog entry for today's date:

Related Tasks:

Update website, post sample chapters of Waterdeep novel

Anyone interested in sample chapters to that novel?

I'm a FR whore. :) Course I'll be buying it.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Even those who adore their 2E CoS boxed set will get a kick out of Eric's new work on the place. Much more has been fleshed out, obviously the place has been updated for 3.5E and the timeline also, but some of the new elements and never before seen material will please the fans no-end IMHO. I'm looking forward to seeing the in-print version and seeing what survived the editing process.

Ed Greenwood has to first finish reading the Waterdeep manuscipt before any sample chapters can be posted. Still, we are getting closer and closer...

Of all the things to be eager for...I think a sample chapter from those two authors is allowed.

Romp is the word I recall most when I've read comments from the author on this upcoming Waterdeep novel. A fun romp in the City of Splendors should be a blast to read.

I like the way that sounds .

As an aside though... Do we now know whether The Cities series was limited to just four novels? I think it was, but I'm just looking for some confirmation of the fact.

My FR novel list ATM lists only 3, so Waterdeep will be the 4th. And yes that is every FR novel to date except for some reprints.

Now that, friend Krash, is quite encouraging to read!

Can you tell me how much info we get on the Lords? The same as before, or more? And will there be any surprises on the Lords' roster?

Indeed.

I'm particularly interested in what we will learn about some of the places and locales in Waterdeep that have, in the past, just received "token" references in previously published material on the City of Splendors.

Yes, that's what I meant when I said I'm particularly interested in the changes and the things they've added. For a perfect lay-out of the city I will always be using the 2nd edition box setting

The Waterdeep is a must-buy as far as I am concerned. I just hope they include good maps, as the city maps in 3e FR has been just about the only thing I think could have been better. The maps in Sharn, for that other setting, looked fantastic. The maps in, say Unapproachable East, looked good but somehow seemed to only include parts of the cities, which annoyed me immencely. I really hope Sharn is the new standard for wotc city books.

As for the lore, well, between Waterdeep and the North, and the new book, I think I'm ready for a new campaign

The whole book is full of surprises, Wooly. I can't say anymore or else Mr Boyd will be mighty peeved, but you can always rely on Eric to give everything just that little bit of a spin or twist.

Actually, I'd have to agree with you Mr Lord.

Though I am a little hesitant to mention it here, the Sharn: City of Towers sourcebook was a wonderful detailing of that fascinating city. Of course, with the history of Waterdeep, and its previous detailing in earlier editions, I expect a great deal more to be covered in City of Splendors, but if the aforementioned S:CoT is in fact the NEW standard for WotC city books, then all signs point to something grand indeed for W:CoS.

I have not read it, only flipped through it at the store, but it seem to cover the city districts very well, with very good maps for each district. The style of the maps are similar (even identical? can't remember) with Dennis Kauth's (?) FR maps, but there are more of them.

I got a very good sense of the layout of the city, just by flipping through the book. Hardly groundbreaking, but the execution seemed superb!

Waterdeep fans should take a look at the top of Elaine Cunningham's web page.

Is it just me or do those two tomes look beautiful side by side?

And civil strife? What on Faerun could be happening to my favorite Realms' city? Any theories?

Good idea George, maybe you and Eric can fill us in afterwards with some of the stuff that didn't make the edited version - unless NDAs or other such rules would prevent sharing the none-published lore...

I would like to see some disturbance in the city. Like Lord Piereigon dying and no suitable successor can be found. Or a problem in the Yawning Portal with the entrance to Undermountain.
Just some thoughts

I think the civil strife line is a generic blurb about the Cities series, not about this novel in particular.

I believe you are correct oh Wooly one. Have you read the other books in the Cities series? I've been putting them off, just wondering how they compare to other Realms novels.

No, most of them came out during a time frame when I was uninterested in the fiction WotC was putting out. I'm now trying to backtrack and find those books.
