A big thank you to Erin Tettensor. As my night winds down it will end with a on my face thanks to reading about "how Zyx thwarted a human invasion." Your short story in this anthology was very enjoyable with delightful banter.

My two fellow Realms here will also be excited to hear about this tale. One has a soft heart (or is it soft head?) for faerie dragons. Meanwhile, the other friend/fellow Realms fan was just talking to me last night about memorable encounters with the faerie dragon that can be found in Waterdeep's Elfstone Tavern.

Sirius

PS: Please pass along my thanks to Sinatra as well for the invaluable insight. I wonder how many tales have been helped along by feline friends.

Figures, I saw the link was broken earlier today, but when I posted the above message it appeared to have been repaired. Alas, apparently not.

Apologies,

Just based on the few pages in the excerpt, I have a feeling this is going to be a great read. I look forward to reading your short story contributions as well. Do you have anything else in the works?

A short in Realms of the Elves, come February (see my scribe's scroll for more details), and keep your eyes peeled for another novel in the works. I don't plan on departing the Realms anytime soon.

Glad you enjoyed it, Sirius, and thanks for the kind words. I certainly had fun writing it.

Actually, I would dearly love to revisit Zyx sometime in the future. Though I have created quite a few characters over the past couple of years, for some reason he's one of my favourites.

I also conveyed your regards to Sinatra, but she yawned indifferently and resumed her incessant preening.

Don't take it personally -- she lives up to her namesake.

Hey everybody,

Sorry I have been neglecting this forum. My time has been usurped by that thing known as a day job. I got a copy of the book (having grown impatient with waiting for author copies) and plunged in. I have to say that all the stories were super.

Sage...I hope that The Book Dragon meets your expactations. It was great fun to write. It has been fun waiting for this book to come out, but I am glad that wait is over.

Hey Jim!

I heartily enjoyed your story as well. Excellent, excellent villains.

Did you see the Book club reviews over at worlds? It's all RotD2, all the time over there www.worldsofdnd.com/forum//viewforum.php?f=35

Thanks, Murray. "Strength of the Jester" was a great anchor to the antho, tying it back into the Rage and "humanizing" what is happening to the dragons.

Erin, I just have to say the Faerie Ire was wonderful! Having a soft spot in my heart for both faerie dragons and cats (I have two), it was definatly right up my alley for a great read.

All the authors in Realms of the Dragons II got together and wrote a quick flash fiction webstory.

We each had only 100 words in which to tell our part and the story was made up as each person went.

I hope you enjoy it.

Yes, Faerie Ire was excellent...if Zyx was a God, I'd worship him in a second.
One story I didn't particularly like was the one with Alin, Ryla etc...seemed FAR too much like the Serpe-something from the first anthology....Jamie's story was rather awesome though (The only problem with a lot of short stories is, you don't get a good sense of closure after the 'twists').
All in all, I liked it muchly.

What a concept! If Zyx was a god, butterflies would never go astray, howler monkeys would all have similar political leanings, and mist dragons would take a proper interest in world affairs.

As for humans, we'd probably be rounded up, tagged, and then re-released into the wild where faerie dragons could hunt us down one by one and tease us to death.

Thanks to both you and Melfius!

Sounds like an exercise I recall from an English 101 or 102 class. This tale should be a blast to read later on tonight. Thanks for sharing it.

Something I want to address: Apparantly these 'dragonslayer' stories are becoming like a Friday the Thirteenth movie... 'Group hooks up, group goes to slay dragon, one member of the group betrays them and was controlled by/is a dragon'...it's predictable and lost the shock it had back in the old days.
There's a lack of any sort of closure in the ending, and any cleverness in it has ceased...if the dragonslayers actually WON, it'd be an amazing twist.

I think I just lost a bet. You're the second person to have mentioned my cat, meaning people actually DO read author bios.

Good points, Ethriel.

SPOILER for "The Hunting Game"

I was trying to get around it being cliche -- you were sorta supposed to expect the draconic-dragonslayer thing (like the vampiric vampire-hunter cliche), but then it turns out to be a centuries-spanning game of tag. The dragons' motivation was the real twist in the story -- the other twist was just a head fake to get you to leave your feet, so that I can knock you down and score 2 in the key.

It's not that, Erik, it WAS very well written and the whole tag thing was interesting, but the overlying theme still remained: It was very simple to guess ONE of the party was a/working for/enslaved by a dragon, and that it was almost definately Ryla and that the party would be destroyed because of her.

It's not that I didn't LIKE the story, the writing and the characters (Believe me, I did) it's just that this sort of theme has gotten rather cliche. (It'd have been my favorite story if it turned out with the game of tag and then the Dragonslayers beat them.)
And I felt REAL bad for Alin there...but, even so, keep up the great writing and sorry if I sounded too critical...now that you mentioned THAT, I've looked at it in a new light

Indeed. I purposefully made it fairly obvious, particularly to Realms / D&D fans -- I've gone through the story and counted the hints that I gave as to her draconic nature, and there were 26 (that's about 1 a page, not including repeated occurances of the same thing, like description of her features as fiery or feral). So I didn't go out of my way to make it subtle -- I figured people would guess the truth regardless of what I did, so I wrote the story in such a way that you'd like it regardless of whether you guessed it or not. Then in the end, it's not about the dragon hunting dragons, but about the dragons amusing themselves at the expense of pitiful manlings.

So yeah.

quote:
And I felt REAL bad for Alin there...

Yeah, me too. Don't fret though -- his story isn't necessarily over. Remember, he has (or, rather, had) five years to find the deepest darkest hole to hide in before two wyrms descend upon him. Who knows if he made it?

And he got to make it with a dragon -- not such a bad thing.

"Several times last night."

quote:
but, even so, keep up the great writing and sorry if I sounded too critical...now that you mentioned THAT, I've looked at it in a new light

Well, thanks. And you don't sound too critical! Not at all! I welcome criticism, so long as it's as well articulated and argued as your point. I simply can't stand the "This sucks!" or "I hated this story!" thing, and you certainly haven't done that.

Cheers

The thing that intrigues me, Ethriel, is that the kind of story you're complaning about is very similar to my story "Wyrm Food," which was published in an anthology called Fantasy Readers Wanted -- Apply Within. Theere, an eccentric gourmet hires a dragonslayer to procure a dragon's brain for him to cook. I wonder if you'd approve of the twist contained in that tale.

Just a heads up here. My copy on page 238 has some of the text missing. It didn't print right but I ain't going to return it even though half of a paragraph is missing it's text.

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird
