Hi, this is my first post on Candlekeep. I'm running a game that is right before the Time of Troubles. I was wondering, well actually making sure I have this right, since the gods were sent down as avatars, the magic they usually controlled went wacky. Clerics couldn't do anything, and magic in general didn't function right. I don't think that's exactly how it happened, but I know magic either didn't work at all or didn't work right, like Harpell's half-teleportation. Magic items still functioned correctly, I think, but what about magic creatures, or any monsters with spell-like abilities? Should they still function correctly? Right now the group is out in the wild, and I was planning on the Time of Troubles occurring whilst they were out there. Would monsters and other creatures still be able to cast? A mineral warrior would still be able to teleport and summon baatezu since they're spell-like abilities wouldn't it? I just want to make sure I'm going the right way with this. Corrections on how the history happened are more than welcome, too. I can't remember which book it's in.

There can no great smoke arise, but there must be some fire.

First of all well met and welcome to Candlekeep!

In answer to your question, you have the gist of it right. However, cleric magic did work if the caster was within one mile of their deities avatar.

For example, Tymora's avatar was 'stationed' in Arabel and a cleric of Tymora was able to cast if they were within one mile of Arabel.

As for arcane magic. It was unpredictable at best. It worked once in a while but went berserk more often than not. I would say that monster's spell-like abilities would have also gone awry because Mystra was not their to control the weave. All arcane magic (except shadow magic which wasn't mainstream yet) is controlled by the weave, including spell-like abilities.

Hope that helps.

Yeah and you'll have to work the shadow-weave carefully it didn't appear until 3rd addtion offically.

Its also safe to assume it went funky to because Shar was also tossed down as well during the time of troubles.

Yup I'd imagine the shadow weave was similarly....to use a technical term...knackered, with Shar being cast down as well.

The books you're looking for are the Avatars trilogy, and the follow ups Crucible and Prince of Lies. Excellent series of books (especially the last two)

As I and the other founding member of our gaming group has told countless new FR players: "You have to read the Avatar series." Anyway, to anwer your question, it is safe to say that during the ToT, ALL of Faerun (actually all of Toril) was basically one gigantic wild magic zone. The only exception I can think of would be proximity to their god's avatar, like Chosen of Bane already mentioned.

You have to READ the Avatar trilogy, but you don't have to LIKE it. Personally, that whole series of five books are my least favorite all-time FR books. However, I agree entirely that they need to be read (well, at least the first three, the last two are optional) to understand the modern Realms. They also allow you to fully understand Ed's Shadow's of the Avatar trilogy, which is absolutely my favorite FR series. (Note that I said 'favorite' and not 'best,' since it is intrinsically a personal opinion, and I don't want to start an "Avatar war")

Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be...
Sigh... And now 4e as well.

But if you don't read the last two books you will miss out on the origin of my all time favorite Realms character, Malik el Sami yn Nasser.
