Took me quite some time to get the link thingies down. Now Mr. Woohoo, find me a copy of Resurrection. |

These columns are great! Are upcoming topics always going to be surprises, or does WotC (or Ed) ever post them? |

At times we have some idea. For example, we know that later this year there will be a series of web articles focusing on Waterdeep in support of the novel/gaming product release. But, otherwise, we are often in the dark when it comes to upcoming topics for the WOTC site. |

Thank you Lady, for relaying for the emphasised addition. Ed provides us with another unique insight into the Land of Merchants that is Sembia .

Looking down (or up?) the roster of published Realmslore columns, it occurs to me that they could be collected annually (and augmented by talented scribes with names like Boyd and Krashos, just to name two) and WotC would have a Realms sourcebook as interesting and useful as many they've published to date. I wonder if any WotC 'bigwigs' ever read these threads . . . |

Ed has occasionally mused that in the "good ol' TSR days" (which also happened to be unprofitable ones as I understand it) stuff like his Border Kingdoms POLYHEDRON colums would have been collected up and folded into a sourcebook on the place. That's not to say that Ed preferred it that way, it was just a comment on what used to occur back then. Those days are gone however. The product schedule appears to be pretty rigorous in the sense that updates to 3E and 'new' stuff are all jockeying for position on the product schedule, and WotC seems to be more eclectic about what products it is cranking out for the FR line.
Collating the Realmslore columns into an annual sourcebook would be useful to diehard, core FR fans but may have little interest or utility for those who aren't that "into" the setting. Especially since they have little or no hard gaming material incorporated into them.
We just have to recognise that we are a small segment of the market in the overall scheme of things and that we have to support the FR line where and when we can. As thanks, we'll occasionally get little gems like LEoF, where the Realms shine through like a beacon and the D&D game retreats just that little bit into the background.

Not to mention that if you collected all the Realmslore presented on the site throughout the entire year, you'd likely have a 32- or 64- page book, at best. Then you have to convince people to buy something that until a month or two previously was free -- and that's assuming they remove the stuff from the site, which they actually don't do very oft...
Admittedly, I have seen that happen... The Reseen of Project Phoenix were listed for free on the CBT site, until they took them down, added drawings of variants, and put them out in an overpriced Technical Readout. The only reason I bought it was because I have all of the TROs...
However, that's the only time I've seen a game company do that. It's likely too much of an iffy prospect for them to even think of it. |

Exactly, we might represent a small percentage of FR consumers. But, would scribes here pay for lore that had previously been available online? I wouldn't without additional material, wonderful art (which is something I have yet to see consistently in an FR product) and an absolute passion for the original material being gathered from online.

Didn't the map folio that WOTC put out consist of maps that had originally came from online? |

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I thought so. Thanks kuje31 for the confirmation. Did you purchase the folio? I didn't. Moreover, even if it had included Realms maps previous found within online articles, I doubt I would have purchased the folio. |

Nay, that's one of the few WOTC items I never purchased. I have no need for maps because I got maps all over the place and I hardly use premade ones unless they are FR specific. :) |

I was the same. In fact, I think I still have the variant details saved from the online site somewhere here.

Again, I am the same. I hardly ever use pre-made maps (and in keeping with the CBT references, their map charts are the only pre-made works I purchase for my gaming needs) for most settings because of the changes I made to certain areas of most worlds. Most "official" maps would be a of little use to me therefore.

One note to add here: from comments let slip by various TSR staffers, and ex-staffers, at GenCon over the years, the Realms was NEVER unprofitable. In fact, it was the engine that carried the company while money (largely made by Realms products) was repeatedly sunk into other projects that were sometimes disastrous. Ed used to tell me that if "he were running TSR" he'd be looking to build more than one basket to carry all his eggs in, too, but as I understand it, the "won't make enough money" argument was never valid FOR THE REALMS in the old days. In the new days, of course, all expenditures must be justified to Hasbro management, who will quite reasonably suggest sinking dollars into alternatives that will make MORE returns than merely a "moderately successful product that will please diehard fans" (hence the ever-expanding novels line). love to all, THO |

Thanks THO for some insider information. And while we are on the topic of Hasbro and profits, the company has just reported First Quarter Results 2005 which show a games revenue decline. |

I agree, but the Map Folio 3D was nice. I bought that even though I had all the FPMs saved on my pc. Of course, I haven't put them together yet, since space is becoming a more and more precious commodity in my game room. |
