So, Lovely Lady Hooded, what ELSE can you nudge Ed into “teasing” us about this book? I think any collection of “root” Realms short stories by Ed has to be the Holy Grail for true fans of the Realms (no matter what scribes like Winterfox think of his writing abilities), and I want to know more, More, MORE! |

I poked and prodded Ed for another tease or two for this book for us all, and he said:
Well, now. Let’s see. Unless it vanishes in the editing, every story in the book has a short introduction from me that includes, in every case, precise dating for the story. Ah, that lovely thudding sound of sages everywhere fainting and hitting the floor . . . :}
What else can I tell you? Well, I used the following words at least once in the book (again, pre-editing): Astoundingly, cobwebbed, enthralled, indolent, labyrinthine, moonweather, radishes, rapture, shapeshifting, spasmodically, thrumming, wonderments . . .
All right, all right, I’ll leave off being silly for just a moment, to say this much: in one of the stories in what’s been dubbed “Best of Eddie” you’ll see a wizard being freely offered spellfire and reacting with horror. So there. Can I go back to writing the Knights book now?
So saith Ed. Don’t worry, I shall persuade him to impart more soon. Have I mentioned I can be very persuasive? love, THO

I wonder which Wizard that was. Hmm.. Ed doesn't need any permission to write Realmslore though. :)

I for one cannot wait for this. Ed Greenwood is my favorite author and it will be a delight to read a whole collection of his short stories.
It's about time he got his own anthology book! |

Ed’s latest tease:
Unless swept away in editing, you should get a brief glimpse inside a Red Wizard’s tower.
But wait! There'smore!
And, just perhaps, even a brief glimpse of Storm Silverhand in a rather private moment.
Ahem. So saith Ed. Hungry yet? I am. love to all, THO

In a reply to Jerryd posted here at Candlekeep in his Questions thread, Ed let slip that we’d see a scene in a stable wherein a particular sort of Cormyrean officer (and talking to him later, he clarified that to mean a rank or position, not a specific individual like, say, Alaphondar or Filfaeril) can give a War Wizard an order. Ed also let slip this additional tease about the contents of Best of Eddie:
Someone divine might appear onstage, just for a moment. I couldn’t resist.
So saith Ed. Hee-hee. love to all, THO

AO going to visit? It is about time he came down to the prime plane.
It should be interesting should any deity paysa visit, of course there are a few more likely guesses then AO would be. |

So we know the book is 352 pages, or so says Wizards.
Now I did a quick run through on all the Realms of books. Except for 1 really long shortstory, the average story length is 34 pages (but I still figured the full length of that story into the average.)
Now, to date, there are 9 Realms of storylines. In a 352 page book, with an average 34 page length, that's 10 full length storylines. So 9 Realms stories, 1 full length story, and 12 pages to play with.
Not really the best of if they include all of the Realms of Stories. However, since this is the Best of Ed, we can only hope that'd include just the best. Hopefully it includes the old only too.
So, if we ignore Shadows and Dragons (Dragons 2 too), the count is 7 Realms books. 238 pages used, 114 pages unused. Now I don't think we'd see the story that was reprinted (and not figured into my average) from Best of Realms 1.
So that's 148 pages unused with 6 reprinted Realms of Stories. If we go by the 34 magic number, that's 4 full length stories with 12 pages to to play with.
However, if Ed were to follow more traditional shortstory form, particularlly if he's only got 148 pages to work with, then most stories could be 15-20 pages long. Let's say 20, that's 7 and change on stories.
I won't even think about reprinting Dragon magazine works. But with these crazy numbers I'm starting to wish it were coming out as a Trade paperback instead, so they could use larger paper and smaller text to cram more in. :) |

SirUrza, you've put your finger on it: the book couldn't hold half the stories Ed wanted to include. Yes, it includes some "Realms of" tales, because WotC wants to keep them available as it lets the original "Realms of" tomes go out of print. Yes, Ed wanted to put a LOT more stories in. Remember, he has enough to easily fill ten such books, so combing out the "best" of these should easily give us three books' worth. That's why I want this to be a sales smash. I want the rest of those stories! A string of sequels . . . (happy sigh) love, THO |

Multiple all Ed all the time anthologies? I like that idea, but would really really be surprised if there were more then 1. |

I asked Ed to say a little something more about this book, and (after I murmured breathily in his ear a bit, promising him all sorts of things I won’t repeat here), he grudgingly imparted THIS little tidbit:
All right, TWO ‘someones divine’ make appearances. In separate tales. Perhaps even more than two. I’d better go count them again.
So saith Ed. Ummm-hmmm. Can’t wait for June . . . love to all, THO

I think i'd have to agree that your money should be on Azuth, however i think it'd be great to see some of the other deities put in a personal appearance. Like Lathander for instance... does he ever make an appearence anywhere in fiction? (outside of the Avatar saga of course!)
The more i think about it the more Lathander should pop up in Ed's work soon... as the inspiration for Semoor Wolftooth changing his name and becoming Jelde Asturian in the first Knights of Myth Drannor novel.
EDIT: And whilst i'm thinking of it, will the Best Of include Ed's Manshoon tale from Realms of Infamy? I really liked that one but i no longer own that anthology. Am i the only person that misses that tale? |

Lathander appears as a character in the novel Tymora's Luck, along with Selûne, Tymora, Beshaba, Finder Wyvernspur, and one other (spoiler). Oh, and I think Chauntea had a bit part. |

Not a problem! A bit of further info: It's the sequel to Finder's Bane (technically, both books are part of the Lost Gods trilogy, but the second book in the trilogy is a Dragginglance novel and can be readily skipped). Also, it's by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb, the duo that brought us the Finder's Stone trilogy, and its follow-on, Masquerade. Oh, and one of the characters was originally introduced in the Triangles story arc of the Forgotten Realms comic book. |

If I recall right, and I might not be because it's been years, isn't the main char in the Threat from the Sea novels a paladin/cleric of Lathander? |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

A straight Paladin. It's actually the only time I've ever considered the worth of a "prestige paladin," as the character starts as a fighter and grows into faith and paladinhood.
Anyway, Lathander does have a few "divine dialogues," but doesn't make a personal appearance, as in Tymora's Luck. |
Doggedly converting 3e back to what D&D should be... Sigh... And now 4e as well. |

Hello, everyone. Ed just let slip the following information to me, in a reply for me to post in his Questions thread in the Chamber of Sages (you can read the entire reply there):
Hesperdan and Eirhaun both appear in . . . my short story “How Wisdom Came To The Maimed Wizard,” which was published on the WotC website and will PROBABLY appear in THE BEST OF THE REALMS BOOK II: THE STORIES OF ED GREENWOOD, a WotC mass market paperback to be published in July (if recent history is any guide, it might actually show up in bookstores during the last week of June), ISBN 0-7869-3760-2 (or if you prefer the new thirteen digit ISBNs, 978-0-7869-3760-8).
So, the plot thickens. Guess I'll stir it up a bit more . . . |
