The marketing push has started for this product:
Designer Interview
Top Ten Reasons Your Players Should...
Anyone getting swayed either way from the above information? I'm still firmly in the camp of not interested. Although I am curious to see the art.

Since the FRCS came out, I've not bothered with reading Designer Interviews. I don't see a point to them.
As to the Top Ten, well, there was a couple of things I'd like to know more about, but not enough to think about buying the book. |

This title is pretty unbelievable. These races of destiny presumably need Lebensraum. (And what about those threads about what is the 'best race'? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr.) |

I thought this book was going to be about planetouched races... boy was I wrong
I really don't like all the initiate feats for non-FR deities
Really the only thing that interests me from the list there is the very last one, the Illumians race. |

Ah yes a new WOTC product so we of course have a new race. Too bad this company doesn't produce nature books. If they did, we'd have a replacement species for every animal that goes extinct.
And how soon before we see the Illumians placed shoved into the Realms? |

What do you mean "how soon"? They've always been there, it's just that no one knew about them! |

BOOO HISS! But oh so true. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

Dear Cyric.
Go find the art preview for this product. That's the part I'm interested in. I want to get a look at these Illumians. |

I rather doubt I'll be buying this particular tome for the simple reason that I've very rarely used Races of Stone since it was released. Of course, I'm assuming that Races of Destiny will suffer the same fate, and also end up sitting on my bookshelf .

Special note: While the Illumians are intriguing, I was both delighted (but also a little disappointed) to discover in a recent online chat that they are based on an minor amalgam of older PS races, such as the dabus and phirblas. The Illumians presented an unusual twist, but I still prefer the older symbol-manipulating races...

Where did you get the suntan?
And you make a very good point about tomes just sitting on the bookshelf. These days, I can't tolerate that in an item I purchase. Thus, unless I know I'll get some use from it, I'm not going to purchase an item. Or if it's purchased and I realize the lack of value for me only after reading through it, the tome is shipped back for a refund. |

Seriously, recently I received some PMs from several scribes who had an interest in the avatar sites I'd mentioned on another forum. Since they were not members there, they'd asked about them here. I'd directed them to these sites, one of which allows you alter and distort images of yourself. Thus, my current avatar was born in a fit of boredom .

I've found myself now beginning to do much the same.
It all started with the release of Unearthed Arcana. I've only recently just purchased this book, and only then, because I want to make use of gestalt characters in my soon-to-be-started Mystara campaign in January. In fact, aside from the release of FR tomes, this is a policy I'm starting to use to justify the purchase of any D&D tome. I know that from the releases we've seen for the first quarter of 2005, I'll maybe only be forking out the gold pieces for at the most, 3 tomes.
The weird thing about all of this is, with my promotion earlier in the year, it meant that I now had a lot more money to spend on my D&D purchases. And yet, for some reason, I'm starting to find myself striving to justify the need for each and every tome I intend to pick up. It's strange, because I used to be rather profilic with my buying of D&D products and accessories.
Of course, this may also be a (minor) result of the fact that I'm now starting to run campaigns and gaming sessions using rules and tomes that aren't related to WotC or the d20 system in any particular shape or form.

Exact same situation here. More money than previous year or so, but much more picky about what I spend it on. Don't get me wrong, when I see something I like, I pull the trigger as I did with a pre-order this past Monday for what is probably the most I ever spent on a single gaming tome. But, my less than wise spending days are past me now.

Oh and for anyone who is planning to purchase this tome, please chime in. Although the response so far to the item hasn't been warm, I'd be glad to hear how a Realms fan will use this tome in their FR campaign. |

Hehe... That's exactly right . I've been shocked so many times by the price of baby accessories... It's almost highway robbery . I can see that as time progresses, I'm going to be having less and less many to spend on books. Of course, if the child decides to follow its mother and father's hobby, we can justify buying the books for him/her . Unfortunately, I hazard to think what the D&D system will be like in 4-to-5 years time... .
I can see it now... "Baby's first D&D book"... What a treasured moment... .

It includes many new prestige classes and feats, too! Among the new PrCs we have Bottle Master, Colicky Baby, Diaper Filler, and Mama's Little Angel. New feats include Insanely Cute, Happy Noises, Wake at All Hours of the Night, Look Innocent, and Stinky Poo. |

Let's see... pilferable material for the Realms:
-Illumians- Assuming you're looking to insert these beings into your campaign, consider less of a sorcerous origin, and more of a connection to Deneir.
-New City Stuff- Looks like there's going to be tons of useful information for city-based campaigns, what with the urban combat feats and city spells. Waterdeep, here I come!
-Insignia Spells- Hoo boy, have I been waiting for something like this. Purple Dragons, War Wizards, Hell Riders of Elturel, Red Plumes of Hillsfar, Waterdeep Guard and Watch, priests of anyone... and let's not forget how the Red Wizards are now quite literally leaving their mark on all the magic items they craft.
-New Uses for Skills- A fairly big fan of these, I am always on the lookout for new ways to use old skills (rather than making up "new" ones), and the promised material not only looks promising, but it appears as though they'll actually >gasp!< enhance character and roleplaying opportunities. Any time a book can help to better portray the intrigue and character development necessary to bring the Realms to life, I'm all for it. |

I'm looking forward to this book, of course, I look forward to every book, so that's not saying much. But, from what I've seen, it looks pretty useful. I don't care much for another new race, altough I liked the Goliaths from Races of Stone. |

It not a Sun Tan, Sage is being hunted by the Predator.
Hes in perth with just a few days to kill (and lets face it theres not alot to do in WA)
Now back on topic
One of my players got ROD for Chrissy amd Ive had a brief look through it.
Comments
Chapters 1-4 are useless to anyone who playing in the FR (or any published setting) ROF and the Regional source books make these chapters pointless
Chapter 5: PrCs, Normally I can find a couple of PrCs in a generic source book but in the case of ROD none of them are real FR friendly
Chapter 6: Skills and Feats, this where I found the most useful section of the whole book with the FR having 100 odd Gods I know WOTC will never get around to doing all of them, fortunately I can pilfer from the generic Greyhawk gods (After all its only fair WOTC seem quite happy to rip stuff stuff from the FR, Dracolichs, Black Flame Zealot *mutters*)
Arcane insight Initate feat: Either Initate of Azuth or Initate of Savras
Dread Tyranny: While this feat screams Bane, hes already got one and the only other FR god who has them the Tyranny Domain is Tiamat and the Dread Tyranny feat spell list doesnt really suit her.
Eternal Strength: Initate of Tempus (Maybe red knight)
Far Horizons: Initate of Shaundakul
Law Inviolate: Initate of Helm
Radiate Fate: Not real useful as Lathander already has one
Undying Fate: Initate of Velsharoon
Whispering Secrets: Initate of Mask
Chapter 7: Spells I imagine there probably a few decent ones but nothing really jumped out at me
Chapter 8: Campaigns of Destiny, Useful for a homebrewer but not alot of use for a person playing in a published setting
Conclusion: I will not bother buying this book |

Alas, sorry to hear product did not impress you. Perhaps there are some gems there not seen, howeve a poor review has an impact on the company and also advises them. Good products are of course desired as both consumer and company profit from this.
Of course the consumer looks for difference aspects of the game. |

Races of Stone had a few feats and PrCs that I would use, especially for NPCs, but my PCs won't know about them unless they get their book
Races of Destiny, browsed it at the local game store, it was a bunch of blah. Unless someone in my group gets it and points out something really neat in it. It will be on the very end of my eventually to be purchased list for RPG books. |

I'm sad to say I have it and I don't intend on ever using one piece of the information in it, with the exception of possibly the racial substitution levels.
I'm starting to dread the further Races of... books if they are anything like Destiny.
*sigh* |
