So I was bored the other day and reinstalled BG SoA and ToB. Made a Cleric of Helm, because I've never done the cleric side quests and thought it might be cool, but actually it couldn't hold my interest. Don't feel like whipping through the game with a Kensai, Paladin or Sorceror again, so I figured I'd do an Archer. A friend of mine did it with an Archer and said it was fun and so far it is. (Although, with a STR and DEX set to 18 with all other stats low and longbow proficiency all the way to Grand Master I'm still doing 1 shot kills like they was nuttin.) But I'm going to stick with it for a bit. Anyone have any suggestions for whom I should stick in the party with this guy? I'm going to go the Good Guy route again, just because I'm sick of when you have such a hated reputation (like I did with my AWESOME Assassin <--rockin class), you get attacked by randoms like in every friggin screen. So hit me up with some ideas.

Edwin. He is a must because of his large arsenal of spells. Also, you get funny dialogues and situations with him, especially when he is turned into a female.
Another good character to have is Minsc. A strong fighter, he is the one you want covering your back when monsters are surrounding you. |

Without any doubt... the great, magnific, sarcastic and selfish..... EDWIN ODESSEIRON (you can look my e-mail adress), he's the most powerfull wizard (without counting Jon Irenicus, of course), and I love his behaviour, and I love his quests; have you made the one where he becames a woman, simply great!!!!! |

I seem to be learning more and more about people here at candlekeep...
I wonder just what can of worms Ed opened up with that question... |

you'r playing good agin I would say you will need a priest or someone who can ressurect you if you don.t want to use gold so much. I think Jaheria I mean she can actually fight and raise the dead.Unlike Aerie she is not annoying and learns more cleric spels. |

I will have to say that I used Planetar for priest spells and such, so no cleric needed. I will have to say Saervok for TOB, best character, but if not him, then definitly Korgan the Paladin, he can wield the carsomyr, which is awesome. |

Ya, but summoning a planetar takes up one of those special feats you get as an epic. I don't think it's worth it to spend one epic point to summon someone just for healing and resurrecting when you have a wide array of priests and clerics to choose from.
BTW, Korgan isn't the paladin. In fact, he is the evilest dwarf in the whole game. I think you are talking about Keldorn. |

I think you mean Keldorn the paladin not Korgan the dwarf, i can't imagine the eviul Korgan with Carsomyr, what a tragedy!!!!!!! |

Most of the NPCs don't suck; Minsc, Korgan, Saervok, Edwin, Viconia, etc.
Besides, not using the in-game NPCs don't allow you to have those funny conversations or those relationships that seperate it from other hack-slash games. |

I agree with DDH, the NPC's don't suck at all, they had good dialogue and often quite interesting backgrounds. In fact all of them are worth taking out, and having in the party, just to see what they'd say next. I couldn't think of anything more boring than an entire party of player created pc's. |

Well, I see the utility of an all player made party. t allows yo uto manage a prty as one normally manages a single character, customizing the group as a unit.
Since in the game, though, I was unable to give the mthe personality I would have at a tabletop game, I avoided that route, except for just once to experiment with class combinations.
I did however play around with some of the NPCs, and alter their classes. Minsc as a mentally deficient cavalier was a real hoot.
And so was Edwin as a wildmage. I just know he resented me for that... |

The funniest dialogue with Edwin has to be when he turns into a female, especially when the other NPCs make fun of him for it. I laughed out loud when Minsc was asking "Edwina" if he was Edwin's sister. |

Reminds me of back in BG1 the first thing I did after finding it was to promptly slap the girdle of femininity on old Xzar, for no good reason whatsoever.
Later on... I swear I saw Montaron constantly trying to pick his pockets, over and over again... but Xzar never complained, so I never brought it up.
[EDIT: Xar changed to Xzar] |

Er, nope.
Edwin has the highest number of spells per day, bar none. And no, unless you cheat and duplicate his amulet, you can never create a character that can cast as many spells. Jaheira's an incredibly powerful character, if used right. Anomen "sort of" cheats when dual-classing from fighter to priest, and thus has a certain stat advantage. Saervok is equipped with a small probability to kill an enemy in a single hit.
Besides, it's no fun playing with mute, uber characters with no personality. The game's not all that difficult, and there's no burning need to powergame. Some of my personal favorites include Viconia, Edwin, and Jaheira. (Honorable mention: Kelsey. Hey, he's not an official NPC, but the mod's of professional quality. Not to mention that I vastly prefer him to Anomen, as a romantic option for a female Bhaalspawn.) |

Do you mean Xzar or Xan? Xzar was the one travelling with Montaron, Xan was the depressed mage in the Nashkel mines
In BG2 Shadow of Amn & Throne of Bhaal I used NPCs from the game (& obviously one of my own characters) I found it much more fun with people with the personalities & side-quests My party had Anomen, Minsc, Aerie, Jaheria & Imoen- who was replaced by Yoshimo & then re-replaced Yoshimo |

Mulahey. He was a great cleric. Although he was BG1. In BG2, I always liked and felt protective of Aerie. I liked all the NPCs though, particularily Minsc and Viconia. Even Jaheira was cool, although she was always busting my balls over something or other. |

I did, in fact, mean Xzar. My previous post has been edited to reflect this.

Correct, Mulahey was the Nashkel mines villain.
The only clerics I know of in the first game were.... The ex statue(Branwen, iirc), Viconia the drow, the Dwarven Warpriest, and, I swear there was one more, though I might be mistaken... |

Are you thinking of Tiax? I think he was at least part cleric, if only a cleric of his own little god...
And if we include Druids we also have Faldorn, the most useless druid, ever.
Personnally, I've always been a bit of a Jaheira fan.
As my signature might suggest.
And Xan, of course.

Xan was a Enchanter, not a cleric, but still a magic user |

Yeah, but he was my bad guy, although the original Mulahey was human, chaotic neutral, and much higher level, but of rather similar temperment.
When James Ohlen was designing the game, he used all our old PCs from his long-running, 25-player FR campaign to populate the world with interesting NPCs. So, much in the way that Ed's original Crazed Venturers no doubt feel some interest in the futures and fates of their creations in the canon Realms, I feel some attachment to Mulahey the evil cleric and Rashad the doppleganger/cleric. It's a neat feeling, knowing that a tiny piece of my gaming made it's way into the real Realms. |

Interesting. Are there other NPC's you can recall that got into the game? |

Oh yeah, quite a few. Anomen and Keldorn are pretty much unchanged. Yestlick was a phenomally strong dwarven fighter who had 6 specializations in wrestling, and pop-out spikes all over his armor. Xan was a variation on Elrand the Enchanter, although Elrand ended up being very confidant and powerful, but that was when he reached 14th level and thereabouts. Kivan and Skie were part of the other 'team'. Eldoth was with us, but was Neutral Good instead of Neutral Evil, a very handy spellsinger, too. Shar-Teel is what ended up becoming of a character who was originally a paladin, Lady Shar.
From BG2 and it's new NPCs, Valygar, Cernd and Yoshimo are from our group. I can also remember the Vampire Bodi, who was an 18th level thief with the other team who got turned into a vampire, and then decieved the two teams into fighting each other, while betraying us to the Xanathar. We escaped, went on a quest to get a cure for Bodi's vampirism, and then went after the Xanathar, where the newly restored Bodi went nuts and tried to backstab the elder orb through his prismatic sphere by diving on him from the ceiling. |

The one char who i almost always keep in my party is Minsc, your local Miniature-Giant Space Hampster loving lug, he is no slouch in combat and his antics throughout the game are a good reason to keep him around, he always seems to make me laugh with his final battle speach against Irenicus, "Evil! Meet sword! SWORD!!! MEET EEEVIILLL!!!!!!"
