I was having a discussion with another D&D fan and came upon some things I thought odd. (Mind you, I do not have the vast knowledge of Mumadar or Alaundo, so this might seem like a bit ignorance on my part.) Can a PC us a werecat as his/her character? Also, if he/she is touched by silver (not necessarily a weapon) do they feel or show signs of burning in human form?

Delving into my - ahum - vast knowledge, I can provide an answer (in two parts) which though not a final word, would be the one I would be using as a DM.

First, a character can be a werecat if the DM allows for such type of characters as PCs. <phew... that was easy >

The second part is on the silver (or other substances which have similar relation to were creatures etc.). Typically the metal itself, if touched by the creature, doesn't necessarily hurt it; though (intuitive) knowledge of the possible harm it can do will probably lead to the creature avoiding it when possible. However, in several fantasy novels for instance the fey (or elves) cannot stand cold wrought iron. Even the touch of the metal poisons them. For a story point of view this makes good sense, for gaming purposes, this can become a little more difficult to maintain. As a DM I would still go for the 'fantasy' aspect and have, in the case of the werecat, the PC avoid silver or be poisoned. (with an appropriate DC)

Hehehe... gotcha... for those 2e gamers:

DC or Difficulty Class.

In previously mentioned example this would be (more or less) equivalent to a 2nd edition saving throw vs. poison.

First of all, Mumadar is right, It's up to the DM, actually, you can be ANYTHING you want to, It's all up to the DM though, I mean I have Dragon character sheets for christs sake!(yes, they do make those)

Secondly, no, not in human form, It's kinda like a Vampire in this instance, just a little backwards, like they cant touch crosses, or garlic, but in bat form they can.
Have fun with your Werecat, my friend played a Werebear once, it was cool, just watch your clothes and armor, they tend to get ruined alot

Oh, I'm not playing one right now. It's just for personal knowledge, as well as other... things. Is it possible for the werebeast to transform back and forth at will (in other words, no limit)? Or is there a certain stimulus?

Actually, you can turn to beast at will I believe, but not back to "Humanoid" form at will, forgot where I read this, but I know I did somewhere.....

Can't recall the exact rules of the top of me head, but the 'at will' shapes shifting depends on whether a character is a 'natural' lycanthrope or an 'inflicted/cursed' lycanthrope. The latter category has less control over their forms, hence the shifting at full moon etc. The natural lycanthropes have full control over their shapeshifting abilities.

Anyone who contracts Lycanthropy and is aware of his/her condition, can take Control Shape as a class skill. This is detailed in MM1, page 218. Natural Lycanthropes have the Improved Control Shape feat. Although not fully detailed, the text says it gives them full control over their shapeshifting abilities. Shifting from one shape to another is a standard action.
