What exactly is a spellsinger? I've seen several versions, but they often contradict each other. Is it a PrC, a class, or something else? I've assumed it is a bardic prestige class, but I may be wrong.

The spellsinger, at least in 3rd Edition D&D, is a bardic-themed prestige class for arcane spellcasters of elven blood who use song woven with magic, enhancing each aspect with the other. The class appears in Races of Faerūn.
In general, they can be considered part of an ancient, elven tradition, not unlike bards, minstrels, skalds, and similar roles filled in other ways within other societies. |

Can I ask where you've seen the other versions? There's a bladesinger prc in Tome and Blood, which was reprinted and changed in complete warrior, but i think Races of Faerun was the only book with spellsinger.

Recall that "spellsinger" and "bladesinger" are two different groups of individuals. Although both are drawn from elven culture and tradition, one is a swordsmage, the other a bardic mage.
The spellsinger of 2nd Edition appears in Wizards and Rogues of the Realms, but was more of a gypsy-themed spelldancer, and is far better represented by the prestige class of that name in Magic of Faerūn. |

Only place where I've seen Spellsinger as complete class (in 3rd Ed) was some of those Kingdoms of Kalamar products. I don't think that class had anything to do with elves.
But FR purposes (regarding 3rd Ed books), there are previously mentioned Spellsinger PrC in Races of Faerun and Spelldancer PrC in Magic of Faerun. |

| Wooly, I saw the PrC listed in MoF, as well as several times on different sites, which I unfortunately did not record. I was unsure of the cannonosity of those ones, so I didn't pay too much attention to them. |

The spellsinger began as a 1st Edition character class by Ed (never published except in the internal TSR "Realms Bible," I believe, which is as official as anything else with an ISBN number :}), that Ed wrote to go with his Realms short story "The Long Sword" (which concerns the adventures of Manshoon and his older brother, in the days before the Zhentarim, trying to loot the tomb of a lady knight to get, yes, 'The Long Sword,' which is defended by at least two spellsingers.
Because this "classic" spellsinger was a female human, elf, or half-elf dancing and singing around a spell focus (usually a fire or a magic item) to work spells, or a group of spellsingers dancing together to enact spells they couldn't individually manage, and because the original story depicted them as unclad (they were asleep by night when Manshoon & Co. attacked), TSR wouldn't touch it . . . but the spellsinger notes hung around, enticing lots of designers, and mentions of them kept 'sneaking' into print, one way or another. Hence the various later versions and publications.
