Hi everyone,

I have searched for a long time the meaning of the name of each year described in the Forgotten Realms calendar. The meanings of some names are quite easy to find, but others are, in my opinion, impossible to find without a good explanation.

Do you know where I can find such informations ?
I'll be very grateful if you help me :)

I precise that the meanings that interest me actually, are mainly the names of the years 1358 to 1372 CV :)

Try downloading the Forgotten Realms Time from the Candlekeep site [http://www.candlekeep.com/library/lore.htm#rumours]. The descriptions there may help you figure out why the year was named the way it was. If there is no description to be found, I am afraid I cannot help you.

Well, I've already downloaded this timeline, but it only gives informations about important events that take place but in many cases, not the event that explain the name of the Year. I wonder if the meanings of each year's name has already be published in a Dragon Magazine...

I do not think you will find a full explanation regarding the name of each of the years.

I don't know... I'm quite sure to have seen something (an article ?) like that a long long time ago. And I believe it was an official source (Dragon Magazine or TSR source...)

AFAIK, there isnt anything listing the event which tied to the year name (I assume youre refering to the Roll of Years, such as Year of the Unstrung Harp etc.?) For recent years, you can usually work out whats happened and make sense of it with the year name, such as the example above, the Unstrung Harp refering to the splitting and dividing of the Harpers.

(I hope it was in that year anyway else my theory goes right out of the window )

Yes, it seems logical that the "Year of Unstrung Harp" refers to the splitting of Harpers, with Khelben who leaves the organisation ;)

But I'm still sure that somewhere on internet, in a dark unknown place, lies the answer to my questions about the meanings of theses damned names (I'm a little "bull-headed" :D)

I am told that these names were given a long time ago, so the names did excist prior to the year and prior to any event that may be linked to the name.
Therefore linking events to the name of a year is somewhat tricky. If such an event does exist it's purely a coincedence (depending of course on your view on predestination in FR )

Well, that's just not a coincidence if an event occuring during a year has a link with the name of the correponding year : A "sage" named Augathra the Mad had chosen the name of each year in the future, like a prophecy , many centuries ago. And there's too many links for coincidences : Year of Shadows (Attack of the Malaugryms, powerful beings from the plane of Shadows), Year of the Worm (Flight of Dragons), Year of the Prince (Celebration of the youngest heir of the Mulhorand Empire, 11 years old, Horustep III...)

Augathra the Mad wrote the name for thousands years in the Candlekeep Library. That's why I come here to find an answer, even if the search is far from being easy ;)

I continue my research...

It might be a nigh impossible task to find the events which correspond with the names of the years. Not all these events are big and world-wide known. Some might be local small events, without the majority of Faerun ever having learned as to what the name stood for. Of course there are a couple that have a clear link to major events, as indicated in the previous posts.

Finding all the smaller ones... If you're willing to use non-canon, I'd suggest to be a little creative and think something up.
