Thought I'd start a thread. I'm scare-excited for this. I hope it's better than the Witcher adaption and the Wheel of Time adaption and the Rings of Power adapation and...

Ah crap, they haven't gotten one of these shows right but we can still hope, right?

Streaming destroyed Willow, yet Dark Crystal was amazing. Who knows what we are in for?

You've got to look at whose involved.

The folks who ruined Rings of Power, The Witcher, and Wheel of Time are completely uninvolved in this project.

It seems the executive producer is Shawn Levy, the man behind the Night at the Museum movies, Deadpool & Wolverine, Last Man Standing TV show, etc..., his track record is outrageously full of wins and he understands nerds.

The Writer Drew Crevello did WeCrashed & The Grudge 2, and helped develop X-Men First Class and Deadpool.

So the folks that hate the original material and warp it, without the talent to back that up are uninvolved in this show, it's in the hands of folks who possess both talent & respect.

That makes all the difference. It feel safe in Shawn Levy's hands. Ryan Reynolds might even get involved.

It could even be shot at the 1.2 million square feet studio being built in Markham Ontario by Ryan Reynolds.

If it's shot in Markham - Ed is like a 30 minute drive away :) He can go be an executive producer and keep it real!

I have no hope for this project, but I certainly hope to be proven wrong!
Here's my thinking:

We have 3 main audiences this show will aim towards:
•Realms Fans - We know who this group is (it's us!) We will be the most disappointed. WotC have been *awful* caretakers of the Realms over the last two decades, and based on their current Campaign Setting Unearthed Arcana, they maintain zero respect or interest for the lore and the integrity of the setting.
Unfortunately for us, these are the people who will be consulting with the showrunners, writers, producers, etc. and not folks like Ed, regardless of how close a drive he might be. We saw this in the D&D movie and there's no reason to assume they'll wise up for a show.
•Fantasy Fans - Fans of the genre but not specifically of the Realms or of D&D. These folks will be disappointed, I'm sure, because I doubt there will be a solid foundational story to support this endeavor. Imagine Game of Thrones without the first 5 seasons; not necessarily the worst thing ever written, but disappointing nonetheless. (This is the only place I hold any hope, in that maybe, just maybe, the writers will surprise with something fantastic. My breath, however, will not be held!)
•D&D Fans - Fans of the game specifically, with passing familiarity, or not, of the Realms, will appreciate this show as much as they appreciated the movie. It will be cute, it will get some attention, but it will not be enough to make money or justify it's run. We'll get some heavy-handed "fan service" (hey, I recognize that name/place/icon! Hey, that's a D&D term! Neat!) but that's not enough to hold an entire show together.

I hope I'm very wrong! But history tends to repeat, not surprise. ;(

"Come looking for me, and I will blast you to dust, and then lay waste to all your descendants, ancestors, and the realm you came from, every last tree and stone of it. Why? Well, it's what I usually do."

I approached this with a firm refusal to hope.

Your comment made me doubt my commitment, I truly hope you're right.

It'd break my heart, after 35 years of waiting.
"Honor Among Thieves" was ok (it could've been much worse) but it's more comedy than anything else, a portrait of the usual D&D party stereotypes. I'd like something more mature, intense, full of joy and sorrow just like the novels and the official lore.

Let's see.

Sorry folks, I lean toward the "Leave-the-Realms-alone" side. My two copper pieces.

Well I'm hopeful, but I doubt they will knock it out of the park. Back in the day there were TONS of novels in the setting and Ed always said he wanted the Realms in the hands of as many people as possible (or something similar to that sentiment) so that it could always grow and evolve.

Thing is, some of the novels were amazing (I loved the Moonshae trilogy, for instance) and some of them were awful (I never cared for the novels set around Phlan). That's just my opinion so don't jump me :)

Anyway, we've moved away from novels to TV/movies with much the same outcome. Some are good, some aren't. But at least the setting is getting some love, and that's good enough for me.

I have a dream that one day, all game worlds will exist as one.

My one hope for this is that it is successful enough to revive the novel line.
