I've been considering taking my Realms game in an interesting new direction (pun intended); portal exploration.
Using those wonderful 'old' Perilous Gateways articles as hooks, I was thinking of having someone (perhaps Jhaurmael Riversedge?) hire a group of brave heroes to map, chart, confirm, and explore a series of portals.
My concern is, what if the Spellplague left such a mess that such a task is actually TOO dangerous?
So many old Star Trek transporter accident episodes occur to me...
Anyway, any thoughts on making this fun?

Well indeed it could be an interesting adventure, however a few items occur to me.

Some of the Portals were "hidden" only known to few, there is no public record of portals.

Some of the Portals were one way into protected and defensive locations, unwanted explorers would not be welcomed. With location killing,, binding or other ways secure the portal secret.

Clearly the damage of some portals likely occurred as well. The ones that can not be found, or if found so damaged that they can not be trusted for results.

All in all it depends on what portals is on the list of Jhaurmael Riversedge known, or other person, sage, etc. Then use known information about what portals might have been effected, ones known not to have been effected, then you decide what happened to the others based on what might be guessed based on other things that occurred in the area.

You can make it very safe or deadly as far as the portal. It might not work, it might work poorly, it might transport to different location and all the various effects like remove all items worn or carried.

Make it a little risky, try to avoid fatal and remember the goal is to have fun*enjoyment of the game.

"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards."
"Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding.
"After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first."

This is a funny coincidence. While I do not know anything about the spellplague because it never happened in my world, the campaign I'm working on will in part revolve around portal mapping and exploration, on the request of an NPC.

To expediate this I am, and have been for a good while now, consolidating all known, specified portals, permanent gates, crossroads/backroads, planar breaches, misty trails and so on, anything that can move a person from one place to another. The goal is to produce a map of it all for DMs to use (planning to publish it here). If I can be arsed I might even create a website from it.

As far as I can tell nobody has done anything of this scope before, so I really hope I can finish it.

On the other hand you have different fingers.

The "spellplauge" can do whatever you want it to do. So sure you could say "Every portal world wide blew up in an awesome anime CGI Michael Bay explosion!". Or maybe nothing happened. Up to you.

While that is technically true, I guess he is looking for the "official version". So, it depends in what you call "post-Spellplague".

If you refer to the time period between 1385 and 1487, then most portals ceased to function, and the ones still functioning did so in unpredictable ways. A few even became time portals.

I guess that after 1488, most portals began to function as described in 3e, as the Realms suffered a "reality regression" after the Second Sundering.

Instead of seeking change, you prefer a void, merciless abyss of a world...

Some portals could have remained functional, but twisted in some way.

For example, a portal to the Feywild might suddenly turn into a portal to the Shadowfell every d6 hours for d10 minutes.

Acolyte Inveterate_DM,

You should check out this recent portal scroll. Great discussion, and a lot of it! You may find it relevant.

Learned Scribe Returnip,

Well, I think, as of the most recent conversation, that the crossroads the pretty dang cool. Until you brought it up again, I completely forgot about them from MoF.

Funny, I've been toying with including Ningauble of the Seven Eyes (from Nehwon) in my campaigns. He lives in a series of caves that act as a planar nexus so 'it' (Ningauble) is theoretically connected to all worlds, realities, time periods, etc.

To more directly answer your question: I don't think much in the way of 'official' material has been released for the current state of portals and portal networks. You'll have to decide for yourself what has happened to any given portal.

@Returnip, ahem...please get that done. I'd love to see a comprehensive work on all the known portals (even ones known to have been destroyed as I believe it should be possible to 'reopen' ruined portals).

Working on it. I'm not including completely destroyed portals such as subject to Mordenkainen's disjunction, but I am including those subject to gate seal since those can be reopened. Once I'm done I will post my draft for peer review before finishing it.

I do not have access to all the 2nd edition books, so I might need some help with that. However, many of the portals from one edition carry over and are the same in the next, so mostly it will be a matter of checking against the list if a portal I've "missed" is actually already on the list. I am also leaving out unspecified or rumored portals where there isn't enough information. Although I do keep those that lack some information (such as key) if the site is specified.

In the end my hope is it will serve as a subway map for DMs. Or just a handy tool to draw inspiration from.
