Dear sages;

I remember that in one of the 3.x FR books, there is a mention of a Purple Dragon (or more), which would protect Cormyr.

The purple color and the ability to metamorphose are indeed due to the elven magic that would have entered the blood of the dragon in question.

I know that the Purple Dragon of Cormyr was actually an absolutely old Black Dragon, and due to his old age his eyes and scales have turned purple.

My doubts are:
Why was there this association of the purple dragon with elven magic?

Could it be possible, in terms of canon, that these purple dragons, as legend has them, actually exist? (I don't mean other purple dragons found in 1e, 2e, 4e materials)

Has Ed clarified anything about this yet?

Thank you in advance.

Cormyr is very much NDA so we have only heard parts of the picture regarding this.

Thauglorimorgorus was the old black dragon that used to rule the lythtlorn forest that would one day become cormyr.

He was supposedly tricked out of his dominion by an elf lord (cant remember his name) who in turn ceded that land to the blood of the obarskyrs.

Thauglor was then slain much later by one of the obarskyr kings during a dracorage I think.

It is believed that there is a magical field covering cormyr and that thauglor was able to manipulate the weave within this region. It is also believed that the elf lord then was able to exploit that and now the obarskyrs gain some benefit from this link.

It's all speculation. The nations belief in a purple dragon as a defensive force may stem from as far back as dhalmas and his honour guard that helped him liberate suzail from the minotaur pirate lord. This was adopted by later kings who named the armed forces of cormyr after dragons. Then the civil war between the purple and red dragon kings (with their armies called the same) probably cemented that idea.

There are also rumours about sleeping dragons that vangerdahast could call upon to defend the realm (which were true).

We have to hope that one day Brian Cortijo releases a comprehensive guide and history of cormyr that irons out all these details.

Thank you! I will study more about this information. Do you know where I can find canonical reading on this?

Its spread all over the place unfortunately.

Cormyr a novel holds bits about the history that I mentioned. Then there are the cormyr sourcebook and volos guide to cormyr. There is a backdrop article in dragon/dungeon mag that is helpful, plus a thousand posts by Garen Thal / Brian Cortijo and Ed Greenwood.

If you like Cormyr then dive in, theres a lot to read and cool bits of info to discover.

The elf lord in question is Iliphar Nelnueve. It was the ritual Feint if Honor, normally conducted between two dragons. Iliphar sort of cheated by stuffing his staff down Thauglor's throat.

Prince (not yet king) Azoun II slew Thauglor in the Year of the Dracorage (1018 DR).
