My group just came across a minor artifact and need to destroy it.
I remember reading in a 1st or 2nd ed book about ideas for cool ideas for how to destroy artifacts.
Anyone got any sugestions or links to somwhere where i can find the early dungeon masters guides?

That's something that the DM should come up with, thinks I.

A lot of the artifacts in the 2nd edition Book of Artifacts had some comlicated means of destruction. But these means were usually related, in some way, to the origins and purpose of the artifact.

For example, the Scepter of the Sorcerer Kings was made in Netheril, by a guy who decided it was time to off some gods. It wasn't completed, but it's still quite powerful -- it reflects all magic and psionics, can heal or harm 9 times a day (and one of those hit points is a permanent gain or loss), and each time it's used, the influence of one random deity is banished from the world for 10 days.

The suggested means of destruction:

use it to slay a god

hunt down and kill all of the remaining sorcerer-kings of Netheril (and Ed says there's several of them left)

or get all of the gods to swear to not meddle in mortal affairs.

As you can see, none of those things is easy, but they tie back into both the item's purpose and its origin.

Here are two possible things you could try:

1. A dragon's fire breath can destroy artifacts (though it may depend on the age and type of dragon), as demonstrated in a certain RAS novel (I don't want to name it, or I might spoil something).

2. I think there is a certain type of beholder (Gauth beholders?) that can devour artifacts, either destroying or draining it of its magical power.

I think a lot of it would depend on what sort of artifact it is. You said minor artifact, so I wouldn't think slaying a god would be a prerequisite.

For example, a regular fire would pretty much take out a deck of many things. Orb of Annihilation is taken out messily by a rod of cancellation. So, it doesn't need to be too drastic, but it could be tricky to do.

Can you give us a hint as to what sort of object we're gunna' be blowin' up?

By minor artifact i ment super-powerfull magic item

its a chalice that increases the holders abilities to affect undead
it gives +2 to caster level for casting necromancy spells
in the hands of an evil cleric it doubles the cleric's rebuke powers
in the hands of anyone else it gives rebuke powers equal to a cleric of their character level

for all powers to work, once a week it must be filled with the blood of an innocent person (read child), no matter how the chalice is flipped arround the blood slowly drains untill the end of the week
(ie, no blood spills)

i was thinking something like protection from evil on the chalice then submerging it in acid that was consecrated as holy water

See, I'm still thinking of artifacts in the 2e sense. Back then, it was actually written that artifacts were a reason for the DM to break the rules. So that's why I'm taking the more oddball approach.

For this particular item, if I was the DM, then one of the suggested means for destroying it would be to immerse it for 7 days in the tears of something powerful and evil, like a pit fiend or a majorly powerful vampire.

...or Tears of Evergold from a heartwarder (see faiths and pantheons) and then shattered by a holy weapon on midsummer's day.

I certainly hope you are joking about this... It's highly inappropriate to discuss the whereabouts of acquiring copyrighted material here at Candlekeep. If you are searching for material that is considered 'available-to-everyone' then that's fine, but asking for internet links which lead to material, such as earlier editions of the DMG for example, would certainly enrole the grand scribes of the great halls of Candlekeep into a series of headache-producing legal episodes...and that's not really something we want here...

Well met

Indeed! Quite right, Sage. Mayhaps zadiac refers to locations where such old tomes may be purchased.

Other means of aquiring tomes, however, are not condoned
