I myself always abhorred the 3e idea of "dire animals". I say, originally there was only the dire wolf, which was a bigger and physically more powerful form of the normal wolf, but which actually is one of the pleistocene animals found in the Monster Compendiums (along with mammooths, wooly rhinos, smilodons, elotheres, hyaenodons...).
And then 3e came with the dire versions of every animal, meaner and with horns, teeth and other protrusions all over their bodies... I didn't like the idea originally, but now I stand humbled by the dire cougar...
