I don't know if you consider Vangelis to be "synth music," though it's what comes to mind when I hearken back to the days of my youth.
So, Vangelis' album "Themes" was something we listened to while playing the original version of Vampire the Masquerade. Made for great background listening while reading the Clan Novels series.
I can't imagine his older work being worth listening to with Realms novels. However, Vangelis did the film score for the movie Alexander (2004), so maybe that would work. |

Retrosynth is probably my primary listening genre nowadays. It's a great way to unwind after work. I get a lot of play out of these: Perturbator, Mega Drive, Dynatron, Power Glove, Protector 101, Dance with the Dead, among others.
The genre is gaining a lot of exposure from movies like Kung Fury (which features a soundtrack in large part composed in this style by Mitch Murder), and video games like Hotline Miami (with many such artists on their soundtrack) and FarCry 3: Blood Dragon (soundtrack by Power Glove).
If you're looking for something more of a 80s contemporary instead of a retro artist in the present day tapping into the sound, I think a lot of Tangerine Dream's output is of a similar vibe.
They're probably one of the major influences on the present day artists producing this genre. Though I haven't read any interviews or essays defining the origins of this genre. I probably should, could stumble on a lot of music I missed out on. |
