Well, thanks for the feedback Jorkens, Wooly, and Sage. I'm not quite sure how I feel about Spellfire yet. My question probably should have been "What is everyone's opinion of Shandril's Sage?" I think I will go ahead and finish the trilogy and then move on to Counselors and Kings.
Thanks again. |

I liked Spellfire -- both the original and the reprinted edition. I think it still makes a perfect introduction to the Realms for first time FR readers, as it presents just enough Realmslore and adventure and important characters for readers to experience a taste of what the setting has to offer.

I have to agree--I loved Spellfire when I read it. It's not perfect, but it had that intangible something that kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. |

I enjoy reading about Elminster and the Knights of Myth Drannor. Add to that the appearances made by the Simbul and that is what really has kept me turning the pages here. But I am finding Narm to be a very annoying character. The romance between him and Shandril is a bit annoying as well. Perhaps I am just dwelling too much on the little things. Oh well. Thanks again to everyone for the input. |

The first book of the new Knight's trilogy comes out next week, if you haven't heard. :) |
For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I am almost done with shadowdale.... by the way where do the Shadow of the Avatar books fall into the Elminster books? Is it right before Elminster in Hell?

Not really, no. The Shadow of the Avatar trilogy/events take place during the Time of Troubles events/trilogy. So.... 15ish years before El in Hell, which takes place during the Return of Shade events/trilogy of 1372. |

The thing about Spellfire that particularly impressed me was that, despite its failings (and there are one or two notable ones - the plotting's all over the place for a start) there's an incredible warmth about it. Some of the banter between the Knights of Myth Drannor reminds you of friends sitting round a table playing D&D - which probably isn't that far from the truth. The sense of affection you get between characters seems genuine, and that, just as much as the incredible amount of Realmslore and one or two jaw-dropping action sequences, ensures the novel has a special place in my heart.
While I'm on, I've just finished 'Song of the Saurials' and it was fab. Tremendous feel-good ending. They don't write 'em like that anymore!
On to The Ruby Guardian, methinks... |

*nods* Those are more or less my own feelings on the matter. |

| Finished Prince of Lies but Trial is still in the mail so I think I may start the first Elminster book The Making of a Mage. I would like to start the Sembia books or The Songs and Swords but I am missing the first and fifth books of Songs and Swords and the only Sembia book I own is Black Wolf. |

I have kind of a random sampling of books I've read. I've conqured the Drizzt series, the Double Diamond Triangle series, the first 3 Elminsters, the first half of Sembia, all of Cale, the Rogues, Avatar series, Last Mythal Series, Year of Rogue Dragons series, Bladesinger, and Bloodwalk. So, I've read between 55 and 60 books total.
I'm working on Blackstaff, and will do Ghostwalker next before I take another break from the Realms.
So, I've read a bit of the old and a bit of the new. With 130 or so left to read, I've got a ways to go. |

Well i'm on the home stretch to completing reading my FR novel collection.
I'm currently on Ironhelm (Maztica book 1) and will continue with this trilogy over the next month or so. After that, it's just Elminster's Daughter and Silverfall to read. |

| I Finished Elminster Making of a Mage and have started Elminster in Myth Drannor. My copy of The Trial of Cyric the Mad came in the mail but I think I will finish off the Elminster Books first. |

| I've so far read 2/5 of Elminster series, all books about Drizzt (and of course The Sellswords series), Songs & swords, Starlight & Shadows, Silverfall, Realms of Valor, -Deep, -Underdark, - Elves, The Summoning, the Siege, Cleric Quintet series, Dissolution, Forsaken House. A pity I don't have that Farthest Reach, because without it I can't continue to read that wonderful serie. |

As far as I am able to discern, I believe I have read just about all of them. I say "just about" because every once in a while, I see one in the used book store that I haven't heard of. Rarely, but it has happened.
Is there a complete book list out there anywhere ? There is a novel guide on the Wizards site but it is no where near complete.

There's plenty of those book lists online, including our own Forgotten Realms Bibliography. And for a timeline of what novel happens when, see O Love's Novels Timeline. |
