| I'm still new to the novel scene. Currently I am reading Spellfire, Azure Bonds, and Elfshadow. |
And if the PCs DO win their ways through all the liches to Larloch, “he” will almost certainly be just another lich (loaded with explosive spells) set up as a decoy, with dozens of hidden liches waiting to pounce on any surviving PCs who ‘celebrate’ after they take Larloch down. As the REAL Larloch watches (magical scrying) from afar. Myself, as DM, I’d be wondering: “Such a glorious game, so many opportunities laid out before your PCs to devote your time to, and THIS fixation is the best you can come up with? Are you SURE you’re adventurers?” -Ed Greenwood

Excellent places to start!
I'm about 100 pages into Blackstaff. I wanted to read more of it last night, but my sleep-inducing couch attacked me again. |

Sleep doesn't attack, it simply takes you away quietly...
I'm getting close to the end of Final Gate, myself. More comments in the Book Club to come soon. |

Well met
Ahh, an excellent choice of novels there, mavericace. I'm sure there is a scroll somewhere around here on those particular tomes. Feel free to share thy thoughts on them. Old they may be, but they are some of the most oft talked about novels today. |

Hmmm... Am enjoying the Finder's Stone trilogy immensely myself, but I must agree with you about Shadowdale and I'm afraid things don't get much better with Tantras and Waterdeep. By far the best books in the Avatars series are the two later books - Prince of Lies and Crucible. I found both really quite exciting and, in their own slightly twisted way, a lot of fun. You do need to have read the original trilogy before you tackle them, though. It is worth the effort.
Best wishes!

| I just finished The Erevis Cale trilogy bring my total of FR novels read up to 44. And let me say this was the best series yet. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Great story, great characters. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't yet read it. |

I loved all the Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb books I understand where people say they are a very good start to the realms. I do want to finish the Avatar books even if they are kind of slow so that I have a better understanding of the whole time of troubles thing.
So far even though Shadowdale isnt one of my all time favorite books I have read far worse lol.
After reading the 5 Avatar books I think I will go onto either the Sembia books or Songs and Swords books. |

Can't really speak of the Songs and Swords series except by reputation, but both those series sound like excellent ideas. I think you'll really enjoy the Sembia series - there's some great (and quite varied) writing in it. Let us know how you get on!

I've not read the Sembia books, though they are highly recommended by others.
As for the Songs & Swords books... Elaine is the second author I'd recommend after Kate Novak & Jeff Grubb. Her stuff is among the best we've gotten for the Realms. |

Oooh! This is a tough choice... The Sembia books were particularly well written and offered plenty of intriguing background lore on Sembia itself. Something that was, for me, very hard to resist since we've only be offered tidbits about the realm itself thanks to its previous "untouchable" history.
Though, Elaine's books are always a primary favorite for me -- along with Ed, Elaine is my favorite FR author and I always quickly devour everything she's written for the setting.
As I said... tough choice for a first time reader of these books.

| Right now i think i am leaning more toward the Songs and Swords books due to the fact that i have aquired all but the first book in the set and the only book i have so far from the Sembia books is Black Wolf lol. I have been a buying fool on ebay, amazon, and local used books stores as of late but i try to wait around for the best deals. |

In that case... go with Elaine's books.
As for the Sembia series... it's really more complete if you start from the Halls of Stormweather anthology. No completely necessary, but complete nonetheless.

I finally foud Tymora's Luck! After loosing so many auctions on E-bay, or seeing prices that were insane, I walked into the FLGS and they have a shelf of old books that people trade in for store credit, and it was staring at me . . . woo hoo!
I'm a bit excited . . . |

Nice one! I must admit, serendipitous moments like that are just fantastic, aren't they?
You going to read it straight away? Or are you going to let it sit on the shelf and gather mystique like a vintage wine?
Best wishes!

| I'll finish Bloodwalk first . . . and hope that I run into a copy of the Floodgate in a similar manner (oddly enough, I can find the Magehound and the Wizard War, but not Floodgate at my book stores). |

Buy it online. |

| Is Floodgate technically still in print? The only new coppies I see online are upwards of 10 dollars, which I'll pay if I have to, but I was just wondering. |

| Hmmm...good question. I could have sworn I saw these books in stores though. It seems weird that only one book in a trilogy would be out of print, but who knows? |

Two words . . . Black Wolf . . .
But I'll check and see if I can order it next time I swing by either Borders or Barnes and Noble. Thanks everyone for checking into that . . . |

I am always 3 months behind the latest releases due to my dislike for hardcovers :-) I usually wait for the paperback release before buying the newer releases. Besides that I go to 2nd hand book stores for the older books to complete the collection. (I have about 3/4 of the series on my book shelf, and still have half to read!)
the only exception for buying a new release right away is usually when Elaine Cunningham has written a new novel, I really like her works. |

| Started and finished Blackstaff yesterday (amazing how a lack of functioning computer-screens in the house throws up spare time to read), and the only comment I can make is: "Why in the name of Selûne's Tears hasn't Steven written a novel before this?" |
There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist. Terry Pratchett |

I know that's what I've been thinking.
I haven't received my copy yet, but it feels like forever since Steven's first fictional piece -- "Persana's Blade" -- for the Realms of the Deep anthology.

Let's see....what I've read and a quick review... Master of Chains: Terrible All Drizzt books up to Two Swords Trilogy: Good Finder's Stone Trilogy: Some of my personal favorites. Cormyr, and High Road: Pretty good, if long Best of the Realms: Very good short stories
There are probably some others....does anyone else remember the Finder's Stone Trilogy?
