Hi, folks. This is a quick catch-up note. Thanks to those who answered some of the questions.
Ode, glad to hear you're enjoying Liriel's story. Thanks for the kind words. At this time there are no plans to continue the Songs & Swords series, nor is there a novel about Elaith in progress (at least, none of which I'm aware...) And as much as I'd like to take credit for Elaith's creation, he first appeared as an NPC in a game product entitled "Waterdeep and the North," by Ed Greenwood. When I wrote ELFSHADOW, my first novel, I didn't realize Elaith was a well-established character in Ed's home campaign. As far as I knew, Elaith existed only as a one-paragraph description. That paragraph appealed to me, so I took the character and ran with it. Over the years, Ed has been very gracious about this accidental literary hijacking.
Naeryndam, the return of Shade occurred just as the events of the Counselors and Kings trilogy were drawing to a close. The wizards of Halruaa will have some serious adjusting to do, but I agree that neither Matteo nor Zalathorm would willingly become allied with Shade. A game product entitled The Shining South (written by Thomas Reed) was released after the novels; perhaps it sheds some light on the matter. I haven't read it--does anyone here know if it addresses this question?

The only nod given to the Shadow Weave in regards to Halruaa given in that book (that I can recall) is that there are rumours that some wizards have begun turning to it instead of the Weave. In short, not much of an update on that matter (but it's still a very good game-supplement - in my opinion). |

I heard that there was (a short story?) about Elaith in Dragon Magazine, does someone remember what numbers were those? I read that from net about a month ago(perhaps..). |

Ode, that story will be in the August issue of Dragon Magazine, which will be mailed to subscribers around July 25. It includes his daughter, Azariah, and his half-dragon lieutenent (and distant cousin) Tincheron, a character who is introduced in the upcoming novel The City of Splendors.
For those who might be interested, there's a new "Elaith page" on my website, www.elainecunningham.com. This includes a biography (with parenthetical notes naming the book or short story that tells that particular part of his tale), a bibliography, art, and a bit of flash fiction.

Half-Dragon? Cousin?
Curiouser and Curiouser.
What is the Dragon Magazine's story relationship chronologically to the upcoming novel? Do the novel's events take place first and then the short story? How much time roughly between the two?
Thanks in advance.

Yep, half-dragon. Distant cousin. Hey, these things happen.
The short story takes place in the autumn of DR 1371, shortly after CITY OF SPLENDORS, and shortly before the events of the framing story of EVERMEET. |

Just curious: What episode(s) in Elaith's life would you most like to see told in short story or novel?
- His early misadventures in Waterdeep
- The development of his criminal "empire"
- His relationship with Azariah's mother (think Otello, except Desdemona actually DOES fool around...)
- His time in Tethyr, in which he cleans up some untidy loose ends (i.e., Isabeau Thione from DREAM SPHERES) and ends up championing the wood elves of Tethyr forest as a sort of (ruthless) elven Robin Hood
- "Return to Craulnober Keep," in which Elaith visits Evermeet shortly after the events of the novel EVERMEET, and considers rebuilding his ancestral home
- Elaith learns that Amnestria bore him a son, who, in a twist of cosmic irony, is more of a rogue than his father

For some of us, books are as important as almost anything else on earth. What a miracle it is that out of these small, flat, rigid squares of paper unfolds world after world, worlds that sing to you, comfort and quiet and excite you... Books are full of the things that you don't get in real life - wonderful, lyrical language, for instance, right off the bat. - Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird

I love an author that requests input from passionate fans. Is this for a possible proposal to a certain publishing company?
- His early misadventures in Waterdeep
- The development of his criminal "empire"
Hmmm..I'm not really intersted in either of those. I like the fact that much is left unknown about his empire building. This omission adds an air of mystery that fits this character.
- His relationship with Azariah's mother (think Otello, except Desdemona actually DOES fool around...)
Oh! I think we have a winner for this reader. I'd love to find out more about her. Are you saying that Elaith was sleeping with someone else's Desdemona?
- His time in Tethyr, in which he cleans up some untidy loose ends (i.e., Isabeau Thione from DREAM SPHERES) and ends up championing the wood elves of Tethyr forest as a sort of (ruthless) elven Robin Hood
Interesting, but not something that immediately would have me excited to read about.
- "Return to Craulnober Keep," in which Elaith visits Evermeet shortly after the events of the novel EVERMEET, and considers rebuilding his ancestral home
Possibly, if told where we see Elaith reflecting back on the event that made him an orphan. I'd be curious to see how Elaith feels towards his ancestral home. I'd call this my third choice.
- Elaith learns that Amnestria bore him a son, who, in a twist of cosmic irony, is more of a rogue than his father
And this would be my runner up. I'd love to see cosmic justice done. Plus, we get to see what a son of Elaith and Amnestria is like. I still would prefer the Othello tale first, but this would be my second choice.

His early misadventures in Waterdeep
This one would be nice, but it doesn't grab me as much as some of the others.
The development of his criminal "empire"
I like this one better than the above one, but it's still not the top one.
His relationship with Azariah's mother (think Otello, except Desdemona actually DOES fool around...)
I'm not familiar with Othello... This one doesn't really grab me.
His time in Tethyr, in which he cleans up some untidy loose ends (i.e., Isabeau Thione from DREAM SPHERES) and ends up championing the wood elves of Tethyr forest as a sort of (ruthless) elven Robin Hood
I'd really enjoy seeing him (reluctantly) donning a white hat.
"Return to Craulnober Keep," in which Elaith visits Evermeet shortly after the events of the novel EVERMEET, and considers rebuilding his ancestral home
I really like this idea. Considering how far he's gone to distance himself from his past, seeing him journey home -- literally and figuratively -- would be an incredibly interesting read.
Elaith learns that Amnestria bore him a son, who, in a twist of cosmic irony, is more of a rogue than his father
I would like to see this, particularly the moment he learns this, but this choice only comes in second or third (the Tethyr idea ties with this one).
Seeing Elaith return to Evermeet is my choice -- I can't think of a better story. |

My votes would have to be the early establishment of his "empire," (I would love to see the clashes that he must have had with existing criminals, perhaps even well known ones, as well as near misses with law and order types. Could Elaith have run afoul of the Xanathar or the Red Sashes at some time?), and his return to his homestead on Evermeet. These two equally grab me. |

I think there is a conspiracy here, Elaine. If all the fans pick different favourites out of the options you've presented, I think they hope you'll relent and write-up every single one! In that vein, I'll just vote for "ALL" and leave it at that. Anything you write for the Realms is on the 'must buy' list - always.

I'll have to echo Wooly on this one, although judging by my experience with your work so far I'm sure I'd enjoy it anyway

Not so much, but I'd pay to see the opera-version

The winner for me, and also the subject that seems most fitting (to me) for a "traditional" FR-novel (but what do I know).
quote:

Interesting idea, but it sounds more like an idea for a short story than a novel, and I want a novel (in my humble opinion at least).

Sounds like a hoot, but I still vote for the Robin Hood story. |

Not really, no. If you've ever had a really strong yen for, say, pistachio ice cream, something that's like at itch in the back of your mind until you give in (or get therapy), you'll understand what I'm currently experiencing with Elaith's story. Publishing the thing would be nice, but at this point it's irrelevant. I'm hoping the Elaith compulsion will back off some if I promise it I'll start a short story before the end of summer. And from a practical standpoint, it's not a bad idea to have an extra story on hand.
I was leaning toward "Return to Craulnober Keep" because it's definitely a short story--at this point, I don't have time to do a novel just for the heck of it--and because I've never written a ghost story. (Yep, the ruins are haunted.) Also, it happens right after the events of the novel EVERMEET and shortly after the events of CITY OF SPLENDORS. I'm feeling sequential these days. And it occurs during the winter, which interests me as I've never contemplated what Evermeet in winter might be like.
I get a LOT of email requests for more Elaith stories, and I was curious as to what this particular community might want to see. It's interesting how completely divided the responses were.

Surely you don't suppose the notion of sleeping with a human's wife would overtax Elaith's conscience?
I think this tale is tailor-made for Elaith. First, Shakespeare's version of the original Italian story constantly challenges contemporary expectations of good and bad, black and white. The good guy was the "black Moor." (Since "black" was also used at the time as an adjective for a dark-haired but milky-skinned Irish lass, it's not clear whether Shakespeare had in mind an Arab or a "Black" man.) The bad guy, Iago, was European. In early 17th century England, the audience would have very strong expectations about racial tendencies. Same thing here--people don't expect moon elves to be bad guys, and even when they ARE, it doesn't seem to register. Point in case: all the people who complain about my rendering of gold elves as "stereotypical bad guys" and desire to see the gold elves "rehabilitated" forget that the most popular of my elven characters, the non-drow who has appeared in more books and game products than any other elf, is a bad guy and a moon elf. So yeah, I can definitely see Elaith pulling off the Iago role. With a twist, of course. |

That is practical. Who knows...the dragons had two anthologies from WOTC. Perhaps the elves will be as fortunate and one of your stories could appear in Realms of the Elves II.

If that's the case, the "Return to Craulnober Keep" or "Othello in the Realms" seem to be more feasible. Elaith finding out about his son seems to this reader to need a novel to really do the tale justice. After all, there's the shock of Elaith finding out about this child and then Elaith's reaction to those who have kept this information from him. That alone can ring up pages to me.

Oh yes. I believe Iago (One of Shakespeare's best villians) mentions at one point about not wearing his heart on his sleeve. Yes, that reminds me of Elaith. |

I would be interested in reading any new story about Elaith but the two which really intrigue me are 'Return to Craulnober Keep' and the 'Othello-esque' one, with 'Robin Hood' as the next one behind those. |

A fair question. When you consider how long elves live, and how complex the ties between elven families might be, it could probably be argued that there will ALWAYS be living relatives, provided one is willing to climb the family tree high enough and wander into the outermost branches. I've never established a necessary decree of consanguinity, but I would assume that such would have to exist.
But the simple answer is that Tincheron is a young half-dragon, whose birth (or more accurately, his hatching) occurred after Elaith was rejected by the Craulnober moonblade. |

I suppose I should organize these into short stories, novel-length, or either. (The "either" stories could be told in part in short stories, or developed into longer narratives.)
Short Stories:
- His relationship with Azariah's mother (think Otello, except Desdemona actually DOES fool around...)
- "Return to Craulnober Keep," in which Elaith visits Evermeet shortly after the events of the novel EVERMEET, and considers rebuilding his ancestral home
Novels:- His time in Tethyr, in which he cleans up some untidy loose ends (i.e., Isabeau Thione from DREAM SPHERES) and ends up championing the wood elves of Tethyr forest as a sort of (ruthless) elven Robin Hood
- Elaith learns that Amnestria bore him a son, who, in a twist of cosmic irony, is more of a rogue than his father
Either:- His early misadventures in Waterdeep
- The development of his criminal "empire"

Not really, no.
I do find it interesting, however, that people here are more interested in filling in bits of Elaith's past than in a new story. This would suggest that short stories, not a book-length project, is indeed the way to go.
