Our days at Candlekeep are shining brighter than ever with the graceful return of the Lady Cunningham!!!
Let me be the first to welcome you back to Candlekeep, Elaine. I hope you have faired well through the personal issues which Alaundo spoke of back in March. We are again, complete .
One thing I'd like to note. The Sage's post is in response to Elaine Cunningham's reply on this thread.
However, I don't know if it signals a regular return by the author where she will again be fielding questions in this thread. For those scribes who are interested, Elaine Cunningham has a blog where she makes frequent entries.
Actually, I had only just realised that, since I was reading EC's blog just after I'd posted here . I was going to amend my earlier above post, but SB's already taken that liberty and added a suitable supplemental.
Thanks SB .

Technology and Magic in the Forgotten Realms
Sean has recently discovered the History Channel, and one of the series he's been following is "Breaking Vegas," an enacted documentary about gambling and those who attempt to beat the system. I had this series in mind when writing a short story entitled "Game of Chance," a tale about the rogue moon elf Elaith Craulnober, one of my favorite characters from the Forgotten Realms.
I'd intended the story to focus on Elaith as a elven crime lord, and to be a showcase for some of the glittering AND unsavory elements of life in the city of Waterdeep. (The story, if accepted, will appear in an issue of Dragon devoted to Waterdeep, with articles by Ed Greenwood and Eric Boyd...) But as the story evolved, it took another path, becoming instead a meditation on the implications of one technology being superimposed upon another. Rather unexpectedly, I cycled back to the core issue of Elaith's life: the Craulnober Moonblade, a hereditary elven sword he was unable to claim. The ending was also unexpected, but it's a good fit for Elaith's personality and the story's underlying theme.
Every now and then, a story will surprise you by taking an unanticipated direction, and when it works, it's one of those Great Writing Moments that make this job worthwhile. :)
That said, I get a little impatient with writers who loftily complain of characters who "won't behave." It's a freaking decision tree, folks, and as a writer, you're making the decisions. Each branch leads to many posibilities, and if you're not careful, the story can get away from you, but enough already with the "My characters are so real they're living their own lives..." schtick. If you truly think your characters are calling the shots, may I suggest spending more time out in the sunshine and less time experimenting with recreational pharmaceuticals? ::End of rant.::
One more thing about the story: Elaith's daughter Azariah, his blade heir, makes an appearance. She was last seen in Elfsong, which took place in DR 1364, and she was described as a toddler. This new story is set in DR 1371, so she is still very young--around eleven years old, and at least a decade away from puberty. My "let's just climb the decision tree and see where it goes" approach to this tale led to some interesting developments for Azariah. I was surprised by the direction, and poor Elaith definitely never saw it coming!
For those that visit the blog, be sure to check out the comments for this entry. It features an exchange between Paul Kemp and Elaine Cunningham that I think others might enjoy. |

This is very interesting.
I love the way EC's work evolves. It's so dynamic at times, and so very real. That is probably why her stories are always so enjoyable.
This is great stuff Lady Cunningham. And thanks again SB, for posting the blog details here at Candlekeep.

You're welcome and I hope others enjoy the blog details as well. Of course, my brain is now trying to determine what Lady Azariah did that surprised her father.
And my two fellow FR fans here very much enjoyed the commentary from that blog entry between Paul Kemp and Elaine Cunningham. Both came across as very polite and friendly. Such behavior is always nice to see among two talented FR authors. |

Hi, folks. Just wanted to let you know a sample chapter of City of Splendors is up on my webpage, www.elainecunningham.com
The link will take you to the home page, but it's easy to navigate from there.

Thank you for sharing that chapter, Elaine. That removed any lingering doubts about buying it in hardcover, rather than waiting for the paperback. Consider at least one copy sold. |

I would say that my decision after the sample chapter would've made that "two" hardback copies sold... but I'd already decided to purchase the hardcover immediately after the novel itself and the authors involved were announced... .

Now this is just tantamount to highway robbery!!
I've managed to put off purchasing Elminster's Daughter until I see it in paperback, I can rein in my enthusiasm for getting the Starlight & Shadows gift set. But after reading that sample chapter I just gotta have this book
Seriously, thank you for the sample chapter Elaine, make that two sales based on it. |

Some news today regarding Realms of the Elves from Elaine Cunningham's blog:
quote:
Realms of the Elves A week or so ago, I called the editor and withdrew from this anthology. This was an incredibly difficult thing to do. The story was one I've been wanting to tell for a very long time. I was looking forward to revisiting the elves of the Forgotten Realms and picking up a story thread from Evermeet. But something had to give, and unfortunately, this was it.
Right now I'm focusing on finishing up the EverQuest book, clearing my desk, and resolving health issues. Then I'll focus on developing new work methods.

Well met
This is indeed very saddening news. I have longed for this particular tale to be told, as have many. Elaine, is this simply due to time constraints? Is there a chance that the story will ever see the light of day? |

I've read through the chapter. It was good but it didn't get me as much as I think it did the previous posters. I'm gonna buy this book but only in paperback not because I wasn't drawn into the book by this chapter but because I never buy hardcovers.

That's sad news indeed, but your health is more important and I'm pretty sure there could possibly be more chances to revisit this story later on.

Indeed, quite disappointing .
But, I would rather that Lady Cunningham attend to more important concerns, like her health, than worry about trying to do to many things at one time.

An anthology about elves without a story by Lady Cunningham in it will feel like a travesty.
EDIT: And I was so looking forward to more of Elaith, too. |

Last I heard, Elaine's story for the anthology was going to focus on Lamruil, not Elaith.

Hi, folks.
There will be a new Elaith story in the September issue of DRAGON magazine, as well as an article about New Olamn, the barding college in Waterdeep. That issue will also have an article by Eric Boyd and an interview with Ed Greenwood, so it's very Waterdeep-intensive.
I would like to see Prince Lamruil's story told, and would have no problems with someone else picking up this thread. I don't foresee tackling it myself any time in the near future.
As far as the anthologies go, I've had a story in every one but RotDII. It has been a pretty good run. |

Details on the barding college in Waterdeep... Neato . And, that coupled with a new Elaith story... . Double Neato .
Thanks for providing the extra tidbits Elaine .

I would just like to say that the Counselors and Kings trilogy was one of my most favorite Forgotten Realms trilogies and I was wondering how much freedom did you have over the various things in the trilogy, for example the Jordaini order, and all of the tie ins of how the trilogy came to a close.
Another question I have is, if given the chance by the publisher would you like to pick up that story and take it any further or is that "the end" for those characters. If it is the end given the above mentioned chance would you like to write any more stories that take place in Halruaa?
Thanks. |

Well met, Sandhrune, and thanks for the kind words.
When the folks at WotC asked me to do the trilogy, they specified that it was to be set in Halruaa, take place in current time, and focus primarily on human characters. That was the extent of the editorial direction. The second edition game product "The Shining South" provided most of the background lore. The rest, including the jordaini order, was newly invented.
I don't anticipate returning to Halruaa, but you never know. Under the right circumstances, just about anything's possible. At this time, however, I'm working on several non-FR projects. |

Well, hello, Elaine!
I came him to say that my copy of the Daughter of the Drow came yesterday, and I´m practically in the middle of the book! I´m loving the book, and I need to say that it is, truthfully, one of the most enjoyable books that I have read in all my life. You have made a good work (and put me in problems. Now I want to read all your material. I´m thinkint that I will need to loot some dungeons to catch all the gold that I´ll need ). So... thank you!
quote: But, I would rather that Lady Cunningham attend to more important concerns, like her health, than worry about trying to do to many things at one time.
And I´m echoing the Sage in this. After all, we have only one body to use (until the day that someon stole the spellbook of Manshoon, and all of us came to know that pretty clone spell...) |

Elaine,
I just wanted to say that I love your books. Especially the Counselors and Kings trilogy. However, I've confused about one thing I have heard many rumors about. What does Halruaa think of the return of Shade? The two nations are certainly akin to each other, yet, the Shadovar are obviously evil and I don't believe Matteo or Zalathorm would be Shade's willing allies. |

And why stop now writing when i had a good start(i found this forum intrsting just yesterday so i have a lot to say & ask)..
One thing: Does there exists somewhere 'stats' of Khelben or Danilo? I would like to read them. Like Drizzt's here in Candlekeep.(a little out of topic perhaps) And for Elaine: I would like to read about hte youth of Khelben or/and Danilo. Both are interesting. Perhaps Khelben would be better. He's great mage so it's nice to know how did he become so powerful. In 'prologue' of Thornhold you told a little about Khelben, when he were with other mage on the hill. |

Try the 2e Heroes Lorebook tome. Or Kuje's FR NPC file which has the 2e stats for both Danilo and Khelben.
Also, the Blackstaff's stats were updated for 3e in the FRCS.

Again, HL details particular aspects of both characters pasts.
Ed's scrolls also contain a few odd tidbits on the history of the Blackstaff (see Kuje's sig for the URL). Steven "Blackstaff" Schend has also provided some intriguing bits and pieces about Khelben, in the past, here at Candlekeep. I suggest you perform a search.
Parts of Danilo's past are spread through Elaine's tales in the various 'Songs and Swords' novels.
