Hi does anyone know if there are any writings or articles written by Ed about Silver Marches in general, be it a town, place or npc.

| Well, he was the principal author of the Silver Marches sourcebook (which is why several details conflict with RAS's books). He also wrote a fair bit in many different first and second edition sources. |

A scroll that I've been waiting for someone to start in a long time. Hopefully it gets enough attention (and compilation of Realmslore, of course!) to become a sticky like the Cormyr one.
I'm sure there's plenty of writings/responses by Ed about the Silver Marches in his thread. I'm away from my notes now, but will update it here the only the few I've managed to saved. Hopefully more kindly sages would care to share their knowledge about Ed's writings on this region? |

Ed also detailed an entire (small) neighborhood in Silverymoon, writing in-character; look for "My Slice of Silverymoon" on the Wizards website. Linky, anyone? I'm on s-l-l-l-o-o-o-w rural dial-up at the moment, and the site won't even load properly. BB |

Off the top of my head, I recall there was a out of sync timeline in the canon, especially pertaining to the war of Many Arrows and the formation of Kingdom of Many Arrows in the RAS novels, with what was suggested in the sourcebook that war was coming. It is, and always has been the major issue that has torn me about starting my campaign there.
I'm by no means a true expert on these matters, and certainly haven't wrapped my head around the events in Luruar in pre- and post- Spellplague (the RAS novels after the Hunter Trilogy), so I would kindly wait for the timekeeping sages to furnish you with the details on the inconsistency from RAS's canon with Ed's sourcebook. |

I've asked others about this claim numerous times, too, but no one has taken me up on it. I think that this was an issue that was probably talked to death in the past.
The biggest difference would be that the FRCS (3E) and SM both are written from the POV that Obould was still stewing in his juices, angry over having lost the Citadel of Many-Arrows, but had not taken action yet as of mid-1372 DR, and was waiting for another orc horde to achieve prominence; but RAS would go on to write "The Hunter's Blades Trilogy", which indicated that Obould rose up against the North in 1371 DR, and became god-blessed in the process.
The SM bio on Bruenor overlooked the fact that the dwarf king had his missing eye repaired and renewed in the novel Passage to Dawn.
The timing and sequence of events in the description of Bruenor's refinding of Mithral Hall and reclaiming of the throne do not match those of Streams of Silver, The Halfling's Gem, and The Legacy.
RAS had become upset when WOTC decided to wipe out the deep gnome town of Blingdenstone in several 3E works, and to make no mention of RAS's well-known gnomish character, the Most Honored Burrough Warden Belwar Dissengulp, naming a lesser gnome as the highest-ranking known survivor, which would indicate that Belwar must have been killed off. SM attempted to mitigate this disaster by saying that Belwar had survived, after all, and came to live in Mithral Hall with a bunch of other gnome survivors. But the damage had already been done, and RAS has never written about Belwar again, even to confirm SM.
The names of the highest-ranking priest and soldier in Mithral Hall provided in SM do not match those given in any RAS work before, or since. They seem to be entirely made up out of whole cloth. What happened to RAS's well-established characters?
Settlestone is said to have been restored by the dwarves and to still be active in SM, though it had actually been restored by barbarians in The Legacy and was since abandoned in PTD.
Wulfgar, described as 7-foot-tall and weighing 300-pound in the novels, is inexplicably called a "medium-size humanoid" in SM.
Wulfgar's hammer Aegis-fang is illustrated in SM as having a spike peen, but the novels make it clear that it is actually a two-headed warhammer, so it has no peen.
The name of Obould's principal shaman does not match that provided in any of the RAS novels, either.
It has been said that there was a big disconnect between the novels and the games departments of WOTC back in early 3E, and these contradictions would seem to support that claim. |

Remember, Silver Marches is a game source book that utilized 3rd Edition D&D rules.
Wulfgar is certainly big at 7 feet, 300 pounds, but that's well within the range for Medium sized creatures according to the (then) D&D rules.
Had he been 10 feet tall, he would've been described as a Large. |

Roger that. Since I don't play the game, I don't think in terms of game mechanics. I think in the literal terms of the novels. Thanks! |

| Thanks BEAST. I am really surprised about the fact that they have destroyed Blingdenstone. I was really angry when I first learned this too and I am somewhat happier that I know RAS was angry too. In fact I was reading the city's entry in the Drizzt's Guide to UD recently, I am thinking about adding the city to my Silver Marches campaign too, starting the process to get the gnomes into the Alustriel's alliance and perhaps make the players do some work about it. |

BTW, has anyone else come across THIS Map?
I came across that map a little while ago, while looking for Mike Schley's B&W 5e map.

Farinal,
Should you have an interest in the Fall of Blingdenstone, check out some of threads authored by me on the subject. An attempt to stop it from falling to the Drow in 1371 became the focus of my campaign for around a year or so. You might find some lore useful to you there. |

I'm pretty sure that's the map for D&D Encounters season 11 (2012), the "War of Everlasting Darkness" (heavy on drow/Lolth). It's a late 4E map, so it's bound to have some differences from earlier edition maps.

Surely. It's an interesting adventure path / season. It's where Lolth was trying to create the "demon weave" and usurp Mystra's power/Weave... because at the time, Mystra was still dead and her portfolio was theoretically up for grabs.
I'm still sort of fascinated by the idea. Araushnee (Lolth before she was Lolth) was a weaver-goddess, which is why she had an affiliation with spiders even way back then. If Lolth had managed to take and absorb dead-Mystra's power, it would've been very interesting. Would Elminster take up worship of Araushnee/Mystra? How would absorbing Mystra's memories alter Lolth? Dramatically, I'd think.
In a weird way, it would've restored Mystra to neutrality and smashed her lawful nature. Magic in 5E would've been both chaotic and lawful, good and evil, and Lolth's drow clergy would have been changed dramatically as well. No longer just insanely evil and crazy, they could be anything... and changed more into Mystic Theurge types as magic and religion would no longer be separate. Interestingly, that would have returned them to more of a regular elf's sensibilities, as non-drow elves tend to see magic and the divine as deeply intertwined.
I mean... imagine the new faith of reborn Araushnee, fey goddess of Magic... "I am the weaver and the Weave, I am the essence of magic." Mysterious and capricious, neither evil nor good, her new goals would be mystical knowledge, power to control others, and the use of demons or celestials would be all fair game.

Re. this, from hashimashadoo: "Well, he was the principal author of the Silver Marches sourcebook (which is why several details conflict with RAS's books)." Well, NO. Rich Baker was editor of that book, and Jason Carl was the in-house designer, and Ed was assigned places and people to write about and draw maps about - - and none of those places and people had anything to do with Bob's novels. So the conflicts can't be laid at Ed's door. This has all been discussed in the past. love, THO |

HA! You just gave me a flashback to the Charmed TV series with the Haliwell sister-witches.
I had such a love-hate relationship with that show. Good production values and special effects, but usually terrible plots and vapid acting.

... Seeing as how this would make my favorite deity, Eilistraee, completely and utterly redundant, and that this is, IMO, a 'Lolth Wins' scenario, I'd prefer not to imagine this (the fact that my hatred of Lolth is only thing that rivals my love of Eilistraee doesn't help my opinion) .
I'm so sorry that I disagree with you on this, Therise, especially as you have been considering leaving Candlekeep. Please don't let this post be the one that finally makes up you're mind! A lot of the sages here would be sad to see you leave, myself included. Hell, if this post really upsets you, then I will ask the moderator's to ban me from this site, if that's what's necessary to convince you to stay. I'll admit, I'd prefer not to be banned, but if that's the only way to make things right, than I'm okay with that. (Please understand, I don't want to disagree with you, but I can't help but feel... extremely strong emotions about this concept. If I had never heard of Eilistraee, or hadn't gotten as... attached as I did, then I would think this was the greatest idea of all time, but... I'm sorry, I can't think of any way to continue, at least not without making this worse.)
Once again, I am so sorry, Therise, and everybody else, for being such nuisance. (... And, if I happen to get myself banned, then I'd just like to say to take this opportunity to say 'Thanks' to everyone, for putting up with all my nonsense for so long. Gods' know you didn't have to.) |

Oh no no, don't worry at all! I don't consider this an insulting reaction to my post at all! The stuff I wrote about allowing Lolth to take over the Weave and become a new Weaver of the Weave as a reborn Araushnee... I would NEVER actually want that to happen for real!
I really should've been more clear. I find the concept fascinating, but I'd absolutely 100% never want something like this to happen. Ever.
Partly, I wrote all of that because I can (kind of) see where the 4E designers perhaps wanted to go with Lolth after Mystra died. I enjoy the process of trying to follow the logic of situations, even if I consider them to be really bad.
But yeah, no... I would never actually want Mystra to get absorbed up by Lolth. I'd hate it if that actually ever happened in the novels or the background canon for the game. It'd be horrible, honestly.
And as for Eilistraee, I completely agree with you. I really enjoyed the dark Seldarine. I actually really liked the Lady Penitent series, even though the outcomes and events were really bad for the Realms, IMO. I hated the way they did away with Eilistraee and Vhaeraun, and the others also. It's a shame all of that happened, and I hope they find some way of bringing the dark Seldarine back.

Thanks for understanding, Therise. (After taking a cold shower, and some time to think, I had an 'OMG, I have to delete my post before someone sees it!' moment.) To be honest, I should have thought things through a bit more thoroughly, and not let myself get carried away by my emotions, especially since the main cause of those emotions are RW problems. (The one that's probably responsible for my emotional instability is the fact that my dad passed away back in November, and, after being distracted by all sorts of holiday preparations, I finally remembered he wasn't going to be around for my family's Christmas get-together.* ) (The irony is that, when I read you're earlier post, I was looking for something to cheer myself up, and... well, let's just say I wound up feeling worse.**)
I would also like to see the return of the Dark Seldarine, and, if some of the rumors I've heard are true, at least one of them has returned in the Adversary. (Vhaeraun, to be specific. It's... not what I was hoping for, but it's a start, at least.)
*Well, my mom did warn me that the first Christmas after someone close to you has passed away is always the hardest. **It's a good thing I write out my strongest emotions on scratch paper (which I then rip into little pieces), or my post would have been a lot... uglier (and I probably would get banned for posting it.) |

Drustan, I am very sorry to hear about your father's passing. I know how hard it is when a close family member dies, and it can be much worse when it's so close to holidays. I'm not sure there's anything I can say to help you feel better about that, except that my thoughts are with you. *hugs*
About the upcoming 5E Realms, I'm not sure if you have had a chance to read Salvatore's The Companions yet, but if you're a fan of Drizzt and his band, that book felt to me like a true return to the heroic, positive Drizzt novels of old. The ending was powerful, and I actually cried a little - but from happiness and everything all feeling right again.
This may seem overly simple and silly, what I'm about to suggest next, but think about it, ok? Mourning a lost loved one is sharp and painful because of their absence. But I suspect your father would not want you to feel sad - so try and turn this around by choosing something to celebrate about his life. Pick something he loved, and really find a way to celebrate it, enjoy it on his behalf... and do it -with- someone else. It may be more meaningful and healing than it seems on the surface, but it's a way of remembering them as living, what they loved, and in a sense, sharing it with them. And by sharing it with another, and letting them know why, it becomes a new part of life rather than focusing on death.
My thoughts are with you. <3

*sniff* Thanks, Therise. Your words have comforted* me somewhat (er, I don't mean to imply that you're not good at comforting people, but... you know what I'm trying to say, right?), and have given me a lot to think about.
I haven't had a chance to read The Companions (or any of the other 5e novels, unfortunately), but I am a Drizzt fan (though not quite as... obsessive as some), and I really like the older RAS novels because of how positive they were, and how noble Drizzt was, compared to some more modern heroes. (I'm not referring to any FR characters, but I've noticed that some modern fiction in recent years seem to focus on 'heroes' who are little different from, if not worse than, the 'villains'.)
And I don't think your suggestion of doing something my dad loved is silly, especially as I'm already doing something. Three somethings, in fact; 1: I've joined my dad's gaming group. (NOTE: My dad and some of his friends would get together and play board games, primarily the Empire Builder series by Mayfair Games.) 2: I've started (re-started, actually) doing volunteer work at the PIkes Peak Historical Street Railway Foundation (PPHSRF), a local streetcar/trolley/train museum where he did volunteer work. (Actually, everyone who works there are volunteers; the foundation members themselves are all retired men and women who either A: love streetcars, trolleys, and trains, or B; worked on the railroads and/or as streetcar/trolley conductors in their youth*.) 3: I'm reconstructing my dad's old D&D world (he had lost almost all the information on it, except for three dungeons, two towns, the list of deities**, original character classes***, and a few notes on a couple organizations and how certain monsters behaved differently, at least compared to how said monsters behave according to the MM books), and adapting it to 3.5/Pathfinder rules. I had started doing this while he was still alive to try and make him proud of me (though, as his friends have pointed out to me, he already was); now, I'm doing it as a sort of tribute to him.
And... you're right, he didn't want us to be sad, as exemplified by his last wishes; he wanted to be cremated, have his ashes baked into a cream pie, and thrown in the face of whomever happened to be president of the United States at the time of his passing. (Only 1/3 of his request has been completed; the rest is proving to be a little more difficult to accomplish.)
*My mom's the one who really needs comforting, especially since today would have been my mom and dad's 29th wedding anniversary. **And even that list was incomplete; of the 27 gods (9 good, 9 neutral, and 9 evil) only 11 (6 good, 3 neutral, and 2 evil) are named ( the others are just the deity's portfolio, whether the deity is a god or goddess, and a blank space where the deity's name is supposed to be.) ***A couple of the classes he (well, he and his group) created are remarkably similar to the Magus and Inquisitor classes from Pathfinder, and one class is basically an Arcane Trickster. |

Drustan, probably just being there for your mom (and each other) will help a great deal.
That is really great that you're already involved in some of the things your dad enjoyed... and I bet that reconstructing his D&D World is really fun. If you're ever inclined, share some of the things you've recreated. I love hearing about things like that: making monsters and organizations different refreshes them and makes them surprising and fun.
And the pie, heh! Probably not a good idea to carry out in real life, of course, but it might be really funny to create a mock up and film it for YouTube. That seems like something that could possibly go viral as a comedy bit.
