Welcome to the forums, Mr. Salvatore! Like Simon Says put it, all we need now is Mrs. Cunningham -- since Mr. Greenwood is in contact via proxy.
My question is one you've no doubt heard before, but it's one most people disagree with me on, and one I consider important.
What is the actual start of Drizzt's story: The Crystal Shard or Homeland? In other words, which book should be read first?
I've stated a number of times that I'd ask you if you ever came here, and if you said differently than what I consider it to be, then I'd go and change the order of your books on my bookcase.

Very good question, I am new to the realm books and would like to read up on Drizzt.

First of all, please don't ask questions of me here - unless you're wiling to not get an answer. My time constraints simply won't allow me to monitor several different boards for very long. I have an interactive thread over at my website that I try to get to every couple of weeks, but really, that's about all I'll be able to handle.
I do plan on dropping in here from time to time - I'v elurked Candlekeep for years, now and then - but not on a regular enough basis to even think that threads like this will stay on the front page long enough for me to see them. I came here for a very specific reason, and in no small part because of the demise of the WotC board, the migration of regulars, including authors, and my sincere hope that the moderators here will continue to keep this place far more upbeat than the WotC novel boards had become.
I will field this question, though, but not before yelling at Sirius for stealing my joke! Where to start? I was going to say, "The Lone Drow, of course!"
Seriously, this is #2 on my FAQ frequency, behind "how do you pronounce Drizzt?"
(I pronounce it F-R-E-D, by the way.)
As to book order...
To someone who is planning to read them all (the first six, at least), I would say start with the Icewind Dale Trilogy. That's the way they were written, so the flow is likely better in that direction.
However, whenever someone expresses an interest in trying out my work, I direct them to "Homeland." It's still my favorite of the Drizzt books (and right behind "Mortalis" and perhaps "The Highwayman" as my favorite of all my works), and it gives, I believe, the best and purest example of my writing voice (though that voice was far from mechanically perfected at that time).

ps. For those interested, we're doing an e-signing at my site for both "The Highwayman" and the upcoming hardcover release of "Homeland." FYI, "The Highwayman," while set in my DemonWars world of Corona, is a stand-alone novel, and I think a good place to look for anyone interested in any of my work outside the Realms.

So, now I acquiesce to your thoughts on this Bookwyrm. However, I would not call it a complete victory, as Mr Salvatore clearly states -

which was I believe, the basis of my thoughts on the various Drizzt books in the discussion in the 'Good Starting Point' scroll.
Oh well, either way, the issue is now resolved...
