She was reworked into a sorceress under 3e (a move I disliked and never incorporated into my homebrew Realms).

The quick conversion for that... The Simbul was an ultimate magi. It makes absolute sense for her. At lvl 14, this makes her a lvl 11 wizard caster and lvl 10 sorcerer caster. Then there's 16 more levels in wizard and sorcerer that you can play with, which can easily make her a lvl 20 caster in say wizard and 17 caster in sorcerer (or you could make an epic version of ultimate magi to continue building both, granted at an even slower rate).

Very much so Seravin, I am also highly interested in the Simbul. I recall reading Elminster In Hell and that book was very much disturbing. But it was so well written and The Simbul's help with Elminster getting out of hell really made it more interesting. They spoke more of her which always peaked my interest.
If you want to read another book where the Simbul has relatively more face time, grab The Simbul's Gift. It also touches on Alassra's "relationship" with Thay and its rulers, particularly a sly, handsome zulkir.

Yeah, I liked that book. I did not like that they put in some mage that could dictate to the council of Zulkirs. Beyond that piece though, not too bad.

Oh yes, anything that has the Simbul doing ANYTHING. I find her vastly interesting so any novels about her or with her in it, are for me.

When will people learn that iconic “Mary Sue“ characters do not play by the same rules as everyone else? (Sorry, authors, not trying to troll, just calling it like it is - characters who evolve into fundamental world-shaking archetypes simply do not ever meet ignominous ends, they go out in a legendary blaze of martyrdom or gain some semblance of immortality or even do both.)

To me this question is as meaningless, in practical terms, as attempting to define which class abilities are available to Mystra or Larloch or even Telamont. They simply have (and don‘t have) whichever capabilities the author requires to tell a compelling story.

I see, well it was not posed as a question to be psychoanalyzed. Merely to ask what your favorite spellslinger was, plain and simple. So, thank you for the input but a rather simple answer on your favored magic user would have sufficed.

Evoker eh? Tis a first and I was very much into that specialist class as well. As well as Necromancer, naturally.

Necromancers make for some of the best bad guys ever or the dark hero trying to make up for what they may have done in the past.

Indeed they do, I always love making them. Most people tend to stay away unless they truly want a villainous character.

Others worth mentioning but I don't really like as much as the ones in my original list:

Marek Rymut, because he's the only non-annoying character in The Watercourse Trilogy and because he's probably gay.

Robillard, because he a little bit interesting. Okay, that's probably an unfair assessment. I've only "seen" him in a few scenes from the only RAS novel I ever read but couldn't finish (not my cup of tea, really).

Seren, because you rarely see a female mercenary Red Wizard.

Samas Kul, because he has a floating chair (literally) and because he loves roast pig.

Every beginning has an end.

Bard's because music being magical just makes sense to me and Warlocks, specifically Fey, Star, and Gloom(Hexblade) Pacts. Not really into infernal pacts, except for Faridah of course.

I'd also choose Beguiler, except I'd have him or her with the Southern Magician feat making his magic interchangable with divine magic. Although to be far the 5e Bard isn't attacked to a single source of magic, its undefined, and they even leave it open to multiple sources, so I'm not sure if Bard counts as an Arcane caster anymore.

So that leaves Star/Fey pact.

I agree, music in general seems like magic as is irl. So there's being magical in these realms makes tons of sense.

But wow, definitely a great set of choices! Thanks for the input, Gyor!

Two more:

Dyrr the lichdrow, because he's practically protected his House (more than their Matron Mother did) against the backstabbing Houses in Menzo, and because he nearly killed Gromph.

Lady Polaris (before she turned into a fat tadpole), because she used to be the very emblem of Netherese aristocracy, and because she could walk in the Nine Hells--literally--as though she were walking in the park and swat a pit fiend like a fly.

Every beginning has an end.

I swear I've heard of Dyrr the lichdrow from somehwere, and cannot recall where.

And again, I know that name. For the life of me I cannot remember where I've heard their names before. This shall drive me insane. >_<

Dyrr was in the War of the Spider Queen series. Along with Gromph, Pharaun, and all those other drow wizards, etc that were involved in that mess.

My personal faves-
Danilo Thann
Elminster
Halaster
Khelban
Alustriel
Liriel Baenre

Non-Realms
Raistlin
Dalamar the Dark
Bigby (I'd like to thank him for all those hand spells!)
Mordenkainen (for the protections out the yin-yang)

And finally, my very own gnome wizard, Beznik Bogglewort (a pyromancer/alchemist who's a clumsy, near-sighted, and absent-minded pyromaniac who hates elves, with a sarcastic mechanical ferret for a familiar.)

The Goddess is alive, and magic is afoot.

Alystra has the right of it. Dyrr appears in the six-book multi-author WotSQ series. He specifically has the most "face time" in book 5, Annihilation. That I'm aware of, that is. You see, I've only read three yet (books 5, 1, and 2--in that order). Though right now I'm reading book 6, Resurrection by Paul S. Kemp (and loving it so far).

It appears this humble sage has many books to read, and by that I mean tons of them. I know the names and figured I'd read any novels or books about them, but I guess not.

Another favorite of mine is my wizard I have been working on for some time, Alruane. He has aspects of Gorion and Elminster, but who's wizards AREN'T like Elminster these days eh? Haha Either way, I favor his story and his style, he is not your usual mage. Nothing like it actually, yes he possesses GREAT wisdom and intelligence. But his demeanor and personality say more rogue and fighter, than wise old wizard. Sly as a rogue, and as tough as a fighter. His elven nature makes his personality offset his class EVEN more than normal!

My Elminster/Gandalf knockoff was a skilled fighter before getting into magic, so he's quite comfortable with a sword, and often grabs his blade before resorting to spells.

Oh yeah? Wow, so he has physical combat to back his magic or vice versa! That's great! I just meant, this one is ONLY a spellcaster, but he has the mentality and personality style of a fighter and a rogue. Something not TOO often seen with mages. Most have a high and mighty outlook on themselves, others humble and gracious. If he didn't actually carry around a staff, you'd think he was a quirky elven fighter/rogue.
