I didn't set out to specialize in elves. They just kept showing up when I was writing, playing with my harp and making snooty comments about my wine collection until I put them in the story. As one does.

In addition to the elves of the Forgotten Realms, I've written about the linchetti (the nightmare elves of medieval Tuscan folklore), elves in current-day Providence (the Changeling Detective novels), and developed a new approach to crystal-based magic in the elves of my Tales of Sevrin series. Last night, Interaction Point Games announced the publication of a new short story, "A Single Thread."

This is set in a fantasy version of medieval Europe (the year 1415, to be specific)--Kingdoms of Legend, a Pathfinder-compatible setting. Here's a link to a post on my website with more information, including links to online booksellers:

I'll repeat what I said over at Paizo just now: Squee!

There is a rumour going around that I have found god. I think is unlikely because I have enough difficulty finding my keys, and there is empirical evidence that they exist.

I've been wondering whether "Kingdoms of Legend" would receive any supporting fiction.

Now I know!

This is quite exciting, as well as the fact that it has brought Kingdoms of Legend to my attention.

Thanks, Red Walker! The juxtaposition of a forest kingdom of elves with the medieval kingdom of Poland appealed to me. The folklore, the terrain, and the wonderful primordial forests that covered much of central Europe at this time--perfect setting for elves.

I liked the idea of elves who had secrets, elves whose past mistakes come back to haunt them. I also enjoyed subverting a trope of Slavic folklore: the trickster hero, a common man who triumphs through native cunning. The elven bard is a trickster by nature and habit, but her story doesn't follow the path worn by old tales.

It made me think of an article you might find in an issue of Playelf magazine. "Pointy ears and shapely rears."

I'd love to read more in that setting! It would be interesting to see Meiilindria deliver that report to the Queen

::nods:: Because nothing could possibly go wrong with THAT.

The guys at IPG have already indicated that they'd like me to work on another project, but we haven't discussed specifics. But now that you mention it, continuing Mellindria's misadventures has a certain appeal.

One of my favorite sub-genres is 'alternate history', and since you are one of my favorite authors, reading this will be a no-brainer for me.

And of course, now you have me interested in the setting as well.

Well it could be alot of fun for you....When Wisenti Dragonbinder found himself telling his story to Mellindria without out understanding why he did ...... I was thinking that could be tied to the ruby pendant....and now that she kept it, she finds herself telling the Queen everything, including how she planned to not tell her anything

I have to say, Elaine, while I haven't read any of your stuff outside the Realms, I loooooved Evermeet and the Starlight and Shadows trilogy. I crave elves ^____^ Speaking of which, what happened to Liriel during the Spellplague? I read in that short story that she became a follower of Mystra, so what was her fate, if you can share?

Thanks for the kind word, fellow devotee of Corellon. :)

I have some ideas about how Liriel might have fared during the Spellplague, but since they are just conjecture and not Approved Canon, it's probably best that I don't post them online. Not only is this bad form for shared-world writers--such things tend to muddy the continuity waters--but I'd also like to keep my options open, should an opportunity arise to continue Liriel's story. I'd hate to tell you one thing and end up writing another.

Do you plan to write any more tales with her? Or has WotC offered? We're all very curious, given the new up-coming direction and edition.

I don't have any plans, no, but I'm open to the possibility. But no, we haven't talked about it. I've got other stories to write before I can think about Liriel.

Have you ever considered writing a novel (series?) with RAS? I mean, the 'Liriel meets Drizzt' scenario is ever fanboi's wetdream.

Or do you think that Drizzt's uberness would over-shadow your character?

It just seems strange that the two never met or interacted in any way (although, given the geographic separation at the end of your series, its easy to see why). They have interacted with the same people, though... hasn't Drizzt met Danilo Thann? (He's been to Waterdeep, IIRC).

We could have 5th edition drow-babies!

No. Bob has often stated that he considers writing to be a deeply personal endeavor. He co-wrote a trilogy of YA books with his son Geno, but that's a very specific scenario.

Writing collaborations are often described as twice the work for half the money. In my limited experience with them, that sounds about right.

I seem to remember Sharalarra (sorry, I probably spelled that wrong), mentioned a wandering drow, and I got the impression it was Drizzt.

Liriel met Dan, but to the best of my knowledge, Drizzt has not. Sure, the drow has visited Waterdeep, but that's a big city. The odds of him bumping into Danilo are very slight indeed.

I occasionally :headdesk:: at comments from folks who find it unrealistic that Drizzt and Liriel haven't met. Let's think this through. First off, last time I checked, Menzoberranzan had a population of over 20,000. I live in a town of about 15,000 people, and I certainly haven't met everyone in this town. Also, consider that Drizzt left the Underdark when Liriel was a small child. THEN consider that his house was destroyed when she was very young. Drow, revisionist historians that they are, would be unlikely to talk about a house that was destroyed. Then there's the little issue of Drizzt's survival, which by drow law gives him the right to demand the destruction of the attacking house. The fact that he survived is a very dangerous secret, one the Baenre family would take considerable pains to keep hidden. So it's very VERY unlikely that Liriel grew up hearing about Drizzt.

I don't recall this, but if she did mention a wandering drow, I think it's more likely that she was talking about Liriel, or possibly one of the drow associate with Qilue Veladorn.

Maybe it wasn't Sharalarra talking, but whoever it was, I seem to remember they were talking to Liriel, but it has been several years since I read Starlight and Shadows. ^^;

And I should like to say, I loved the encounter between Danilo and Liriel -- it's one of my favorite parts of the book. I like Liriel, but I like Danilo a lot more -- and that brief conversation of theirs nicely showed just how many levels Dan can play on at the same time. It also showed, quite well, how humor can be used as a tool and as a way to communicate messages that otherwise can't be said. As a self-styled Trickster-type, I appreciate using humor like that.

Thanks! That was a fun scene to write. I enjoyed Liriel's surprise and growing delight as she unpacked the layers of meaning in Danilo's comments, and her understated conclusion about the similarity between drow and humans: "I could live in this city."
