This is a dumb question, and I've delayed for days, but it's still bugging me so...
I know I've seen someone outlining how the pricing was done on the ring of three wishes in 3.5e. It was 2-3 paragraphs, just about this one item. I kinda remember it as being Sean Reynolds, but I'm having a massive brainfart and I can't remember the details and I didn't find it on his site or in the books I've thought to look through.
Anyone out there not as foggy as I am?

Ok, so the xp cost (5000 xp per wish spell) * 5gp per xp spent * 3 = 75000
97950 - 75000 = 22950
22950 / 2 = 11475 (that is price you see under the cost section)
Since the item necessitates that the caster level be 20th then the algorithm for the gp price of each wish is 20 * 9 (the level of the spell) * x (the variable that I am using to represent the single use charge of each casting of wish.
22950 / 3 (the number of wishspells) / 20 (the caster level) / 9 (the spell level) = 42.5 gp variable per charge. I do not know why it is 42.5 instead of the standard 50 gp variable in this chart under "Spell Effect>Single use, use-activated," but that is the math as I was able to distinguish it. |

This is because the CL 20 requirement is apparently an error. It should be CL 17, and 9*17*50*3 = 22950.
Thanks for the runthrough. This makes sense. I was mostly just unsure of what to plug in where you're using 50... because the DMG makes it sound like single-use items are consumables like potions and scrolls. The ring itself doesn't go away when you use the last wish, or at least I don't think it does. You could theoretically imbue it with additional wishes, for the normal enchantment cost. Which is not the case with potions; you could reuse the bottle/flask, but that's not the magical item so it's not the same thing. I was looking at it as a charged item with 3 charges, and the numbers weren't coming out right. Thanks again.

Edit: I ignored the entire Table 7-32 in the DMG, which the SRD conveniently throws in my face immediately... I was trying to figure it out from 7-33... sigh. |
