I am looking for something I recall; but now can't seem to find.
It was a game mechanic that allowed a 1st level character (in 3.x) to essentially have some abilities from TWO classes at 1st level. Then, when enough experience points were amassed and the character went to second level, they became a first level character in both classes they had abilities from at level one.
As an example: a character could start with some abilities from the Fighter AND Rogue class at first level; then when he reached second level he was a Fighter 1 & Rogue 1 with normal abilities from both.
Can anyone help me find this?

What your describing is something called "Gestalt". It was featured in the Unearthed Arcana books for v3.5E. Here ya go |

I thought that was it too Diffan...but it is actually the Gestalt that reminded me of this simpler chart that allowed a first level character to have two classes at first level.
At second level they were simply a level in each starting class...not quite as powerful as the Gestalt.
I thought it was in the DMG, but I can't find it now. |

There was something about half levels that I recalled being discussed, that permitted a first level to have some abilities of both classes, however not full of either. NI do not recall a ruleset published for this option though. |
"Small beings can have small wisdom," the dragon said. "And small wise beings are better than small fools. Listen: Wisdom is caring for afterwards." "Caring for afterwards ...? Ker repeated this without understanding. "After action, afterwards," the dragon said. "Choose the afterwards first, then the action. Fools choose action first." That is what I'm talking about.
I want to say it was in the 3.0 Dungeon Master's Guide; but I don't have it any longer.
Unfortunately for me, I've also loaned out my 2.0 DMG to a friend some time ago and don't have it either.

Half-levels and gestalts are certainly not found anywhere in AD&D 2E (or "2.5E"). The closest those editions offer would be (demihuman) multi-classing and (human) dual-classing ... rules systems which impose limitations and requirements. |

On a related note to this: I did find in my 1st/2nd Edition "Greyhawk Adventures" how to play ZERO level characters. Starts on page 117. |

What I find funny is that Dragon also came out with rules on how to make and proceed with 0-level 4E characters too, lol. |

It's in the 3E DMG.
We used the rules once in a Savage Species game to give the centaur fighter a bit more "oomph" at the beginning (and extra feat, IIRC). |
Cheers D

So it IS the 3e DMG and not the 3.5 eh?
Can you quote the page please...for future reference. |
