I am working on a campaign, and have created a country(cold edge). You may read about it in a dragon magazine article soon, if everything goes to plan. I was inspired by the candle keep website, and have dedicated my newest creation to it. It is the local tavern/inn. I didn't want to ust the name candle keep, just incase if someone being offended, so I was wondering if anyone would like to submit a name for the inn. Also I need some NPCs to reside in the city. I've got most of it taken care of, but the characters will be needing the assistance of a guide, or two. They have to go through-out the inn, tavern, and village to find the best deals. So any NPCs of that sort would be greatly appriciated. Things you need to know are that the city is surrounded by harsh cursed tundra, it is the only city within a few hundred miles, and just about everyon the PCs ask are reluctant to agree to go on the quest for fear of the beasts that roam the near countryside. I think thats about it. Thank you for your time. Yours truly, Master Dresdinn

A good name for a tavern/inn ....hmm.. The Foaming Flagon The Dragons Rest maybe the Dragons codpiece(ok i didnt make it up its in caradoon...i just like sayin it) as for a good NPC: Earundil of Evermeet(or whatever i dont know if you are playing in FR though i sometimes also refer to his surname as Silverleaf or ShadyOak) rngr4/ftr4 uses 1 scimitar+1 and a +1jambyya of defending in his offhand(jambyya is in the FR campain setting i belive)wears a mithril shirt +1 and bracers of dex+2
well i wasnt really sure what you wanted for an NPC so if you decide to use him just post again on this scroll and ill be more than glad o give you a few of my other ideas. if not then good luck with your whole deal.
p.s. its great that candlekeep is getting some recognition i only recently learned of it from a friend and had never heard of it before. the folks at candle keep need to try and get there name out there a little better cause this is a wikkid awesome site. |

some arbitrary suggestions for tavern names:
Seas side taverns:
The merry mermaid The white whave The jewel of the sea The Oyster's pearl The maelstrom
More arb names:
The Dancing Dervish Foamy froth The dragon's wing The Mage's Mausoleum
and so on, I could go on forever, but those aren't that good. I think maybe look for something that speaks to your personality. |

I'd be inclined to try and tie the inn's name to the history of the country to give everything as much depth as possible:
The King's Head The Turned Lich The Frozen Fool The Sorrow-in-Snow
Alternately, since the city in question values comfort, warmth and safety that could be reflected in the names of the businesses:
The Burning Hearth The Wick and Tallow The Beer and Blanket
(alright, that last one is terrible but you get the idea )
If you want something a little more generic sounding, I've always liked The Dragon's Lance |

Here's a few Idea's for tavern names: The Belching Dragon The Blind Seer and (one that's alway memorable) The Bearded Lady... Perhaps a Dwarves only bar?
As for an NPC I would recomend Roger The Fence, a Thf5/Brd2 A Human known for his wit and ability to give a good deal on... *ahem* goods of Questionable origin. He wears Hide+2 as well as the Boots of Etherealness (ablity to turn Ethereal 1/day for 1 turn). He usually fights with Rapier+1 but has a non-magical whip just in case. Stats are around Str: 8, Dex: 14, Con:13, Wis:12, Int:9, Cha:14 Feats might include Weapon Finesse: Rapier, Dodge, Improved Init, etc. (note stats and feats are merely for frame work feel free to tweak and rearrange as you will). He's just a traveling 'merchant' making his way in the world. Usually there might be some that are angery at him for some reason or another, all their accusations are, he promises, false... |

I thank you all for your replies so far. As far as Cold Edge being located in the forgotten realms, I have not yet decided, but I don't see why it couldn't. My friend really liked the Belching dragon Cardinal (I think I can still hear her laughing), and I am kind of leaning towards the Beer and Blanket, or the Frozen Fool myself. I'll wait to take all replies into thought before I decide. |

You can use my signature character if you'd like ...
Aman the Rejected NG Male Human Rogue 1/Cleric 6 of Selune
Aman grew up in Halruaa where you aren't anyone if you can't do magic and well ... Aman wasn't anything. Always fond of crafts, art, and making things by hand, Aman grew up without many friends and on the wrong side of everyone's opinion. Finally delegated to the bottom floors of a callous wizard's library during his teenage years, Aman copied and eventually translated many texts when he wasn't being whipped for a snide comment or two. This is where he got the name Aman as the wizard dubbed him after the name of the spell of Amanuensis. Eventually discovering an old text with information about a portal he just might be able to escape with, Aman crafted a plan devious enough to get him out of his home country and out where he could finally enjoy life ... it would only take one precise backstab ... Aman passed through the portal and into the High Forest. He fled west as best he could, avoiding all sorts of danger, and, unbeknownst to him, being tracked the entire time. An agent of Selune was in the forest, led there by his goddess, to commune with the forest and learn more of the shapeshifters. She led Aman to Waterdeep where he studied under tutelage and found that he wasn't necessarily rejected so long as he could bring diverse beings together. Selune would not reject him. Aman would travel anywhere where he could craft, heal, and guide souls into reconciliation. He loves the outdoors and hard work, so long as the work benefits him and others equally. |

Thank you very much Aman, I will defanintly use your character. That was a wonderful stoy, I liked it very much. I wouldn't be surprised in he becomes a very important character in the campaign. I will probably be using Rouge Assassins's Earundil and Cardinal Deimos's Roger too. Thank you all once again, I am almost done with my city. |

Thank you Elrond for you character, she sounds pretty tough. I'll make sure that she makes it into the game somehow, even if the players don't hire her. I don't see why they wouldn't though, most women in RPGs are more trust worthy than men, and most will fight harder just to prove that they can. If I were the one doing the shopping and I had enough money I'd hire her and Aman both, and Rogue I would very much like to hear Earundil's history. |

Oh yeah! I forgot to mention, My friend talked me into it, and I've decided naming the inn/tavern the Bealching Dragon. Thanks Cardinal. It has even inspired me even more. I'll make a back story to the name of the inn. It'll be about a dragon that used to roam the area, or something. If anyone has any ideas about that I'll be glad to hear them also. |

Remember Master Dresdinn, there are always more than one tavern. so add more than one. I am honored I must say, but do not let my ideas infringe on what you wish to make yours.
Although if you need ideas never hesitate to ask, I have so many; some that are, that aren't, that will be and that will never be. I warn you though (which is why I was weary at first to post in response to you request). I tend to be insidious... almost contagious... and tend to, through no fault of my own, make things mine by aiding the hand that shapes them. Consider yourself warned |

I’d just like to remind you that people need food. That is a commodity that is rather hard to come by in a cursed tundra, I’d imagine. You need to have either a very good explanation for where the residents get their foodstuffs, or you would have to limit the size of the city to a mere town, much like one of the Ten Towns of Icewind Dale. They, if you recall, get most of their food from fishing, and import the rest.
As for the dragon, I suppose it’s only natural to make it a white dragon. However, you could make him/her a rather incompetent dragon. Or, at the very least, a loud one, such as after a meal. Or, perhaps, when releasing its breath weapon, it might invariably make a loud belching sound. Depending on the dragon, it might be rather embarrassed about that. It might even take it out on the local township for “laughing at it,” but ends up being slain by the man who builds the tavern/inn. Perhaps you could even have that dragon’s skull on display. (It might even make for a bit to add in the campaign -- a new dragon in the area, who is outraged at the unmitigated gall of the puny soft-skins, putting a dragon’s skull on display like a trophy.) |
