Magical Find: DC 15 Disarm: DC 40 Area: 10 foot radius pit; 20 ft. deep Damage: Magical; Death Save: Reflex negates Spell Resistance: Yes
The Pit of Undeath is a trap devised by the lich, Zanatose Everhate, in order to protect the long corridors in his lair. The design of the pit trap has, however, spread amongst other necromancers on the planes.
Then trap comprises of a 10 foot radius pit trap covered by a Persistant Image spell to make the opening of the trap appear as a normal floor. Those that walk over this illusion must make an immeadiate reflex saving throw to keep from falling into the pit below. Those that pass the save are considered to have noticed the unusual shimmering of the illusion spell covering the trap and may attempt to spot it for what it really is. Those that fail fall into the pit and are affected by the magical spells contained inside.
About halfway down the pit (at the 10 ft. mark) is a thin line os spell-created mist which, if a character falls through, immeadiately kills them with a specialized disintegration spell which leaves them nothing but bones.
Those bones are then animated as skeletal servants loyal to the creator of the trap, thanks to the rune spells carved at the bottom of the pit. A grate also exists at the bottom of the pit which allow the undead to escape into a crawlspace that connects all the other pit traps together. They can then be used by the necromancer for whatever deeds he or she wishes of their new servant.
Prerequisites: Craft Magical Trap; Spells: Animate Dead, Zanatose's Hand of Harvest, Persistent Image; Cost: 120,000 gps. and thats just a trap

That is one of the most deadly and creative traps I have ever seen. I would like to use it on one of my PCs but I am not that cruel. Of course it is good to keep them on their toes. |

.......................shudder... |
My latest Realms-based short story, about a bard, a paladin of Lathander and the letter of the law, Debts Repaid. It takes place before the "shattering" and gives the bard Arion a last gasp before he plunges into the present.http://candlekeep.com/campaign/logs/log-debts.htm |
