Hey all,

I just thought you might like these: http://erikscottdebie.com/2012/02/02/heroes-of-downshadow/

They come from my novel, Downshadow, in which my hero Shadowbane delves into the criminal underbelly of Waterdeep to root out injustice and villainy in the name of the dead god that is his patron: Helm.

I say "4e," but they could easily be constructed to 3.5 builds, I imagine. Kalen would be a Shadowbane Inquisitor, Myrin a wizard with an ability similar to that of a Spellthief, Fayne a warlock/illusionist, and Rath a monk with levels in assassin.

Enjoy!

Cheers

Erik, these are pretty awesome! Thanks so much! It works well wth the Eye of Justice article. I think I may make Mr. Vir a little higher level and have him escape to Neverwinter and join a group called The Council of Wrath. Its an assassin band that kills for people stricken with vengeance and anger. Of course they're going to be my group's antagonists lol.

That sounds cool. Feel free to manipulate those however you like!

It is canonically established that Rath escaped Waterdeep prison and did go to Neverwinter to have a showdown with Kalen between Downshadow and Shadowbane. Where he went from these is uncertain. See my twitter duel, which you can find at this site: http://erikscottdebie.com/shadowbane

I will product some updated statblocks for the continuing novel releases. Shadowbane casts them as low paragon, and Eye of Justice is about the same level, though they may have different powers. The characters evolve as the novels progress!

Cheers

I like the traits you've given them. Very cool to be reminded of how awesome Rath is.

Query, Erik, but since I have yet to read Shadowbane, will reading your "Heroes of Downshadow" supplement ruin anything connected with that book?

Good to know, but Gosh-Darn-it........E-book only?! *sigh* I know it's the trendy thing to do and it's cheaper and has all sorts of perks and all......but I like my paperbacks. I know it's probably only a matter of time before I buy one and this will probably be my first purchase with it....still I think that day is a long time off (months at least!). I wonder if I can buy it and use on my computer.....or print it out at Kinkos?

@Sage: Heroes of Downshadow doesn't even spoil DOWNSHADOW very much, and it seems to be completely free of Shadowbane spoilers. Maybe a *wee bit* about how Myrin's absorption powers work, but that's a very minor spoiler.

I hear you and completely understand. It was not my choice, and if it had been, I would have gone a different direction (primary publication e-book, supported by print a few months later or at least print-on-demand). WotC is currently looking into it, so keep your eyes peeled for a solution. (Actually, the more ebooks I sell, the more likely it is that brand will decide the sales justify a print release, so by all means, buy away!)

And yes, reading it on the computer (with one of the free ereader apps) is a great way to go. I'm not sure how a print-out at kinkos would work, but give it a shot if it's possible.

Cheers

Cool.

I've long been wanting to drop some of your NPC's in my games, so I'm hoping I can adapt these workings for my campaign.

So now I'm starting on "Heroes of Shadowbane," to be released gradually. My first one is . . .

Sithe, one of the most kick-ass female characters I've written. I'm quite proud of how she turned out!

But really you should just read the book!

I am a little confused regarding these Abyssal Genasi. From what I can gather from Dragon 380 their elemental bloodline is tarnished by a demonic taint. If a Plaguesoul is corrupted Air and Cindersoul is Fire. I assume Causticsoul is Earth. Where does a Voidsoul fit in?

edit: Maybe Causticsoul is meant to be Water than Voidsoul is corrupted Air? I'm so confused.

edit2: To add to my confusion, this article names the 4th genasi-type as Gravesoul replacing Cindersoul.

edit3: "The genasi race has many expressions. It is a race of fire, wind, earth, water, and storm." Has 4e broken with the traditional 4 elements model?

Question for ya Erik,

When you make these NPCs, do you just craft a character first and then convert it to an NPC? Or do you use the monster-creation rules in the DMG/Monster Builder, or the NPC rules in the DMG? I'm thinking of turning a few of my PCs into NPCs for people to use in their games and I want to make sure I do it right.

@Fellfire: As noted in the other thread, I don't think genasi are supposed to be representative of the "4-elements" model. There are, after all, like 12 different genasi manifestations. To use 2e-ish parlance, they represent the core elements as well as para-elements/quasi-elements.

Also, the abyssal genasi aren't necessarily straight-up corrupted versions of the normal genasi bloodlines but rather the baseline race infused with a tainted element. One can speculate about elements being "related," however: acid to water, cinder to fire, void to air, mud to earth, etc.

And yes, 4e doesn't really follow the 4-elements model, but then neither did 3e. In 2e it was present as the "core" elements, but largely expanded into lots of sub-elements.

Cheers

I use my own mechanical know-how/designer chops to create them, which is most similar to using the rules in the DMG/monster builder (albeit less formal, because I just do it all in my head). I suggest using those rules but flavoring the powers/items to be PC-esque.

Thanks for the advice, Erik. I had similar thoughts to doing that with my guys and changing the powers to fit the Realms better (like you did with Shadowbane). Too bad there isn't a way to post the cool monster/NPC blocks here on CK. The whole block just looks like a wall of text. Looks like I'm going to need some sort of on-line blog to make NPC PDFs so it looks nice.
